@usucdik I disagree. I think FF9 has the best writing in the entire series up until remake. I love how FFX more directly explored Asian culture/themes while also delivering some really fantastic strategical boss fight once you get to Mt. Gagazet. The writing in FF6 is what holds me back from loving it like the other games. I didn't play it as a child so there's no real nostalgia for me there, and when playing it as an adult the writing just doesn't hold up compared to the later games. I was also intentionally being a dick and get why people love FF6.

Trolls right before end, or right before checkpoint, have an important game design purpose - they ensure mastery. If you get to the end of the section once, it could be an accident. But if you get there twice, you've mastered it. It's the same idea as lives and continues in oldschool games, but actually more forgiving.

My brother worked at a bar and when one of the bartenders left to another country for a while she hid what turned out to be like 3 cases of Smirnoff ice around the bar. Brother said they would just be running around on a normal night and just find like.. the bar back or a bouncer on a knee downing an ice with a frustrated look. They’re still finding them every so often about 2 years later
