If you think about it, it was Big Mac who accompanied them on their previous trips, so I'd say AJ was her overprotective self, but Big Mac just ignored all the instructions because he's more level headed. The episode was a lot of fun, but AJ needs work.

@mrexists54006 жыл бұрын
there is one key difference between roller coasters and flying that gives dash plenty of room to be excited: control. Same with a few fighter pilots I knew, it's the complete lack of control over what's going on that makes it enjoyable for them.

P.S. applejack wasn't in the episode except for the first part, the "ghosts" were just rainbow's imagination getting the better of her, therefore rainbow dash is just as much to blame for the conflict and applejack

I get the feeling that AJ acts super protective like that because it relates to her parents deaths or it somehow is connected to it.
@hariman77276 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There's no mom in her family anymore, so she decided that she has to step up in Pear Butter's place. Hence her overprotectiveness in Somepony To Watch Over Me and Bridle Gossip, and this episode. Also, I'm betting that Big Mac applied the list of restrictions in a much more sensible manner. He'd object to Helicopter Skiing or that MMA class, but he'd be fine with the dancing and such. Also, no want to ride a closing rollercoaster, so less conflict there. Here's hoping for a future episode where RD, Big Mac, and AJ all go with the Golden Mares to Las Pegasus, and AJ gets the lesson that the grannies are more capable than she thinks. But only after they get wrapped up in a Daring Do caper. ;D
@dgvanz11555 жыл бұрын
Apple Jack isn't even in the episode, she just show up in the beginning, the cloud Apple Jack is a reflection of Rainbow missinterpretation of the instructions given to her. For example "Don´t let them get too excited" had a diferent meaning to Rainbow through the episode because she didnt knew what the old ladies were capable of, but for Apple Jack that just mean to watch out for symptoms of fatige and rest properly. It's all part of a lesson about how the elders can have fun just like the youth.

Something I kind of wish they could have done here is have Rainbow Dash wind up having fun with the Golden Gals instead of going on the roller coaster. Discovering that the ways elderly ponies/people can have fun isn't as boring or dull as she supposes it is. I could have seen some fear of aging playing out as Rainbow starts to see in these elderly ponies what she will inevitably experience with age, but find comfort in seeing their ability to handle excitement isn't so fragile after all. Plus, why on earth would a place like this shut down one of their most popular rides? It being one of their greatest draws, I can only think that it means they're going to unveil something even better than the former. So a payoff for Rainbow could have been missing out on the chance to be one of the last to ride the Great Blue Yonder, and be the very first (thanks to the Golden Gals' exclusive access membership) on the brand new, never-before-seen ride that's even better than the first. But that's me. And maybe there isn't enough time to get all of that into an episode.
@geowiz94366 жыл бұрын
Sadly there's a number of reasons: property expenses, someone bought it out, contract expiration, or the most common one (and the one that Disney World/Land does constantly), gets rid of it for something more popular. Not good, popular. The Rock N Roller Coaster staring Aerosmith is a VERY popular ride, but that's not stopping them from remodeling it into an Avengers themed ride. Same goes for The Aladdin Musical Spectacular at California Adventure. Even though it was a pretty popular ride, they still got rid of it and changed it to some dumb frozen musical. Why? Because Frozen's popular and "trendy".
@wendyheatherwood6 жыл бұрын
It might not have been that popular anymore. The huge lines for the ride could have been entirely due to the fact it was closing. Everyone who ever put off giving it a try or going back for a second ride all finally getting round to it while they still have a chance. Also the hotel now belongs to Flim and Flam (still not quite sure how they pulled that off) and they might just have different priorities to Gladmane.
@fermintenava59116 жыл бұрын
I believe they just pretended it was closing to draw in these hungry visitors again. Also, I think Rainbow would have had plenty of fun before, if she were able to let loose on Applejack's instructions.
@nhansen1976 жыл бұрын
I suspect if Dash hadn't been given that list, and had only been told to keep an eye on them, then all they would have needed was to communicate with each other. I think Dash could have enjoyed hanging out with the 'Golden Ponies'. And being they were like premier members of an exclusive club, hanging out with them would have meant no standing in lines.

The Steel Phantom was a beloved Kennywood roller coaster, but it was replaced with the Phantom's Revenge due to the park's wanting to update the coaster and remove the loops that got a lot of complaints. People often ended up looking into their laps because the loops on the Steel Phantom were fast and hard loops. Phantom's Revenge has a few corkscrews, but focuses more on being very fast without loops with big sweeping turns. On the other hand, the Thunderbolt has stayed the same ever since it got remodeled from being The Pippin, and has been an iconic part of Kennywood for ages.

AJ mentioned that RD would find time as she got the list and that she’d learn a thing from them since RD did complain about going with them. I also think AJ was thinking RD would see their desire to do a lot of fun stuff that RD would see their coolness. That’s what the wink could’ve meant. After all haven’t the grannies been going on this trip every year for a long time? It seems kinda ridiculous to think AJ would now make that sort of list and worry too much. Believe me I thought the same of AJ but upon closer examination I saw this conclusion I arrived to. Sure her communication could’ve been better but MLP has had bad communication before.

I believe that AppleJack is a control freak. It shows in other episodes that if she thinks she right then she is right there is no wrong. She makes decisions for others believing she is the only one right, and everybody else is wrong. She makes it seem that everybody around her are so incompetent and she is the only one who can do things the right way. I know that's not what she's trying to do, she perhaps just like doing things herself and feels more comfortable that way but it frustrates me that she does these things and is never called out on it.

Good episode plot for her would be having to deal with permanent change. Like Big Mac and Sugar Belle getting married and either she moves in or he leaves and Applejack needs to find other people to help. Dealing with facts that are out to her control and maybe getting in some episodes non farming related interest would make her character grow.

Well to play devil's advocate a bit, I can kinda see where Applejack is coming from, considering that she's the face of Sweet Apple Acres, and she's responsible for all that happens on the farm. Combine that with knowing about her dead parents, and that grandmother simply can't do everything (partially because of age) and kinda being the surrogate mother to Apple Bloom at times, I can see her being 'hands-on'. Not to mention that cutie mark is pretty much like a pager that she can't overlook being an Element of Harmony. Applejack needs to trust her friends and family more though...

I really don't think she WAS messing with them. Cause the grannies all kind of rolled their eyes about AJ instead of laughing implying AJ is always kind of a stick in the mud that way. But then, AJ is a control freak, this has been referenced time and again. I just wish they would address it and have her work towards letting things go like they did with Fluttershy's shyness.

Nah, I want to see Big Mac and Rainbow Jack bring Applejack along on the next trip, and have them all tell AJ that she was being overprotective from the start. Then they get caught up in a Daring Do caper, and the old ladies save the day repeatedly with smarts and cunning, while Big Mac, AJ, Rainbow Dash, and Daring Do have to help the Golden Mares physically at points, showing that everyone has their own strengths. AJ learns that the grannies are more capable than she thought, but the grannies are reminded that they aren't physically young anymore, but have already learned ways of coping with that, and accept help when they can't run or fly as fast as they need to run and fly. Also, tossed cats as weapons, and horseshoes as a way to throw an artifact to the right spot.

This was a very good episode. Rainbow remained in character and didn't try to get out of looking after Granny smith, the reason she lost sight of them wasn't her fault, the conflict came from underestimating Granny and her friends and what they could do. Which is a fair point of view and you understand why Applejack was thinking that way. There were so many ways this could've gone wrong, but they avoided all of those pitfalls and the episode was very funny and entertaining. We can sympathize with Rainbow because she's trying to be responsible, and thus has no time to do what she wants.

I'm not sure it's that the writers are running low on ideas, but rather it was finally a reason to put Granny Smith in an episode that is primarily about her (and the other grannies). Besides, the series (well G4 at least) ends in 2019, with rumors that Season 9 is gonna be like season 3 with just thirteen episodes. So unless they are gonna thinking of a series-finale movie like a lot of us was thinking that Equestria Girls gonna be, I'm sure that there's still plenty of stuff that they can use, and still keep it kinda TV-Y. Personally, I will be looking for one where there are finally some clues as to how Spike ended up in Equestria in the first place, and how did Celestia get his egg. Not to mention that (and it's probably just a April fools joke the staff did) that there are some rumors about being a Kirin being shown in an episode, and considering that they still have the Spike/Rarity thing around even though it's a bit subdued because of characters like Ember, King Thorax, and Starlight, it would be pretty cool to see what a Kirin in FIM would look like... EDIT: I'm pretty sure all of you know what a Kirin in....specifically why a Kirin is rare....and it's kinda the same as to how a hippogriff is kinda rare as well (well until the movie happened). Just a few thoughts....

As for Rainbow Dash getting excited for a roller coaster despite the fact that she can fly, there's actually a good explanation. When she flies, she's in control. She knows what's coming and she can get ready for her maneuvers before she actually makes them. On a roller coaster, you are a passive observer, you don't have any control over the ride and you don't necessarily know what will come next. That makes it more thrilling than flying, in a certain way.

I think when it comes to Rainbow Dash, AJ dosen't see the growth that she',s gone through. Most of the Mane 6 treat Dash as irresponsible simply because she seems to have more FreeTime or did. Hard to say how. I also know many called lot calling kettle black from the episode Flutter Brutter, when Dash makes the comment to Zephyr about it being the middle of the day when he's going to take a nap. I know she took naps during the day too, but the difference is that she also had a JOB, Zephyr didn't. Back to this episode. AJ not only treated Dash as incapable by giving her that list, but she treated her relatives as incapable too. These are four mates who've had some long lives and experiences, she should trust in their judgement and not great them as infants.

Applejack's motivations were what you said, about her being over protective of her relatives. Rainbow Dash knows her well enough that she should have thought more on if that was the case. Honestly though, it was an alright episode and one you really shouldn't think too much on. I did like the setup of Rainbow having to watch the elderly and how they pretty much instantly forgave in a believable manner when she mentioned Applejack. This was a very strong episode overall, though I agree it would have been nice to see Applejack’s overprotectiveness be called out. I do like Applejack, I really do; but as a character she has really started to get grating, she has had by far the least amount of character development and has been often relegated to being the uncorruptible saint who is always right. I have noticed many of the Applejack focused episodes almost never focus exclusively on her own development, it’s usually herself and her family or herself and a friend. Comparing that to the other man 6 who have had episodes that have focused purely on their development, this kinda sad and it makes the jokes of Applejack being a “background pony” oddly true.
@elijahfoltz37556 жыл бұрын
I do find it really annoying how Applejack insists that she knows what's best for her family yet never receives consequences when it turns out she's wrong. Just because you're the Element of Honesty... doesn't always mean you're right. I really do hope that there's an episode sometime in the future--either later this season or sometime in season 9--that deals with AJ's overprotective nature coming back to bite her in the flank and her having to deal with the consequences. She is sorely in need of a lesson on not being so overbearing all the time. Also, not only were there Rick and Morty ponies, but there was also a Walter White pony in the same shot, and in another scene you can see a Gordon Ramsay pony telling off a donkey. Just... yes.

Apple jack pretty much represented the stereotypes Americans put on the elderly, juxtaposing the only real series that deals with it in the US, the Golden Girls (compared to british tv which has had series after series discussing age discrimination), and RD was a more unbiased third party who believed the stereotypes (AJ) because she had no prior experiences in dealing with elder ponies. It's actually very sophisticated when you break it down, and I'm rather impressed they did a story on the subject. As for AJ, considering her attitude with Flim FLam's Miracle curative tonic, being overprotective with granny has come up before.

Princess Cordelia Music You ship them too?
@genius114336 жыл бұрын
Clayton Johnson The better question is who _doesn't_ ship them? Unless you're one of those… _AppleDash_ or _FlutterDash_ shippers (*shudders*), SoarinDash is the only way to go (and is the canon ship IMO). However, I can and do enjoy well-written MacDash fics.

Glad I'm not the only one who got the golden Girls reference and I'm a millennial and I knew that also if Apple Rose did the moonwalk was inspired by Luna or did it come from the MLP equivalent of Michael Jackson and Applejack should have gotten some retribution that annoyed me to eh but I'm probably "taking this too seriously" XD PS I think Josh scorcher is rubbing off on me

One can't help but wonder if there is a set up for a future episode mixed up in here? And that wink at the end, was AJ trolling RD?
@timpetersen29236 жыл бұрын
I imagine that Granny Smith will berate Applejack for giving Rainbow the impression that things will go to Tartarus if she lets them out of her sights. Someone write a fanfiction about that!
@luvsonic10006 жыл бұрын
This episode kinda is relatable when I wanna do some cool stuff than taking care of elderly. There are many times when I think the elderly aren't capable doing things on their own. But at the same time I understand what RD was going through

Call me crazy, but that one stage magician pony looks a lot like Trixie! Could he be her father? It would explain a lot about her past life.

You are not the only one Doc. I also feel AJ did not earn that wink. Not one bit!

Ok, how did that title get approved? Also, that old blue unicorn magician is definitely Trixie's grandfather.

thebeav PercabethFTW Father, actually.
@sarasamaletdin45746 жыл бұрын
I think father. He wasn’t that old. The grandfather aged ponies look usually really aged like Grand Pear. Granny was just flirthing with a lot younger guy.
I think having Rainbow ask Applejack to sub for her makes sense. Everyone has said in the past that, Applejack is more loyal than Rainbow so, it makes sense that Rainbow would go to Applejack to have her teach loyalty. Thought this was a good episode held back by Applejacks demands.
@JCBro-yg8vd6 жыл бұрын
It's not just Goldie Delicious who's acting like Pinkie Pie. Rainbow Dash is starting to see mental projections of her friends, and even appeared inside a claw machine. But between this episode and "Somepony to Watch Over Me", I think Applejack doesn't understand her family as well as she should, and *REALLY* needs to learn that she doesn't have to constantly supervise them.

Applejack is my favorite pony, and it annoys me that the writers continue to screw up her character and make her the focus of all the blame, we don't know why she is overprotective it was first shown in season one, and again in season four now here, when are we going to get an episode that explains why shes like that, I feel that this is just another episode for people to hate Applejack more.

1:18 ; me after watching the ep. It was hilarious but I wish they had at least hinted at getting a speaking to. It's like the writers don't know how to flush out AJ's character. Oh wait.... (cough 2017 movie)

I think AJ was caught between knowing the grannies are awesome and letting her over worrying get the best of her. Also once again Big Mac is such a great grand-son/grand-nephew/brother.

I can totally see where you're coming from Doc. Overall, I didn't think the episode itself was interesting and I can get behind the lesson. But of course, the one thing I just can't get over is the fact that the only reason rainbow was acting the way she did was because of Applejack. So really, who really needed to learn the lesson here? That's a rhetorical question by the way. And it would have definitely made the whole episode worthwhile if at the very end Granny and the other "Golden girls" came up to Applejack and said they needed to have a little "chat."😁

Did anyone else think that the roller coaster closing was a publicity stunt by Flim and Flam to bring in more customers? Like, the day after it was supposed to close, Rainbow would see there's still a line and someone would say the owners decided not to shut it down. Or one of the Apples would tell Rainbow that the coaster is about to close every time they come.
@GodIAdore6 жыл бұрын
Applejack is a loving caring pony and I think she only wrote this list to test Rainbow Dash's loyalty and to see if Rainbow Dash would be there for those ponies and also learned not to estimate the elderly I mean it ruined the Granny's Fun but it was only because she wanted to teach Rainbow Dash a valuable lesson I'm sure she let the grannies have fun other times when Big Mac was taken care of them but she had to do this or Rainbow Dash would have hurried along going on the roller coaster or maybe not . maybe she would have learned it on her own and maybe they would of had more fun if it wasn't for the list , but this was still really fun episode and know all characters are not perfect. Applejack shouldn't be hated because of this I think she was just trolling Rainbow Dash and trying to teach her something even if she was being over overprotective but that just shows that she cares and that I'm sure she'll learn soon in her life that she doesn't have to be like that so please don't hate her she is a good and silly Pony love Megan PS I think Rainbow Dash would have taken care of the ponies even if her goal wasn't to go on a roller coaster I mean she's not called the element of loyalty for nothing.

Don't think I've forgotten how Applejack and Rainbow Dash tried to commit genocide on the entire species of vampire fruit bats in the episode Bats so i feel little sympathy for their plights yet, After all the ways they have scammed them, I would have thought the Apple family would have stopped supporting Flim and Flam by this episode.

I think Applejack is super over-protective since she's had to take the mantle of MOTHER to her little sister due to the death of their parents so soon after her birth :-( But also I wonder if Trixie's dad will be mentioned later on? Also I'm SUPER FKING EXCITED that you pointed out the Rick & Morty Ponies!! I didn't even catch that! Nor the Golden Girls reference ^^ !!! X-D So cool!
