In this final look, we compare the build quality and overall fit and feel of GBA axes to that of the Hults Bruk axes and hatchets. In the hope to provide a revised opinion on a broader spectrum of the tool line up. Without any further ado lets jump into this comparison.

Having a flatter edge is definitely NOT an advantage. Having a bigger belly (within reason) leaves you with a smaller point of contact when impacting wood- giving you much better penetration and performance.

I purchased the GFB Scandi, Swedish Carving Axe, and small hand hatchet. I am satisfied. I like these comparisons because I didn’t know about the HBF axes, so I like to compare.

So you said you just got it the day before.... How can you "review" something without using it? I'll wait.

Axes are awesome. Funny with so much attention in the KZbin community with innovative knife design and super-steels, I think axes get overlooked a bit. It's nice to see an axe review, especially on a bushcraft focused channel. :-)

Thank you, I plan more axe features in the future. They are slept on and really are the true workhorse of the bushcraft and wilderness community

Hey... I just came across your channel and I did subscribe. I like that your out using your tools and seem to give an honest opinion. So im past using 30 dollar hardware store axes and want to buy a premium axe. I was going to buy a gransfors bruks Scandinavian or small forest axe but it seems there steel in the last year has been not so great. Do you know if this is true? I then was looking at the council tool camp carver. Any opinion? Im looking for a small packable axe for caming. Small processing of wood driving and making tent stakes.... would love your opinion! THANKS!

Honest question, why would you expect a $150 axe to compare to a $210 axe? You say in the video it’s not that much more money but I think the price difference should be a big factor in judging the two axes.

I own the all of those, except the Wildlife Hatchet, which is due in any day for Christmas. Just wanted to say I agree with your assessment completely. Gransfors Bruks heads come fitted a bit better than the HB’s do. And the handles were thicker on the HB’s, as well they were roughly finished in comparison.

One thing I noticed with my Aneby is that the cheeks are very thick compared to other axes I have. I don't know if that's a benefit or not. My vintage axes all have thin cheeks.

Thicker cheeks gives the axe better splitting capability. Thinner is better for carving. It´s a trade off.

The husqvarna carpenters axe has a really flat face on the blade. Never tried one but am curious as to how well it would work in a bushcraft setting.

They're a little too top heavy, imo. I've found that the head is too heavy for choking up on it one-handed, and the handle is too short (19in.) to feel safe for two-handed chopping/splitting. The 15" Almike hatchet, and the 26" Husqvarna All-Purpose axe are much more useful.

In my experience a bellied or curved edge bites deeper, it creates a sheer rather than a cleaving cut.

One thing that GBA does that I do not like, is that they take a hardened steel hammer and smack hardened steel of all there axe heads to see if they break and if they don't break they consider it a pass. It definitely is a step of their production I would like to see done away with.

I think you may have gotten a couple of bad examples. I own 5 HB’s (Akka, Aneby, Almike, Agdor, Atran) and 3 GBA’s (Large Forest, Small Forest, Wildlife). The fit and finish of my HB’s is on par with if not better than my GBA’s. In fact, the fit and finish of my GBA Large Forest axe is probably the worst (though still good) of the bunch. The grain orientation of the handle is not inline with the handle and the grind of the heat is not symmetrical. Even my Agdor, which is not a premium axe for HB, is better than my Large Forest. My Aneby on the other hand has probably the best fit and finish of the bunch. It was flawless right out of the box. GBA doesn’t even use metal wedges anymore so you could make the argument that you are getting less axe than the HB which uses round wedges which many axe experts prefer over the straight wedges.

Well. Maybe that's the case, but I have yet to see one that is on the level of my GBA's. So I can only share my personal experiences.

I get "they're tools, don't look at them with a magnifying glass" but...If you're paying top tier prices it should have top tier craftsmanship. If I spend $800 on a guitar it better not look and feel like a $200 guitar.

This video seems a big one sided. Apparently the GBAs are perfectly made with no downsides. Video seems like you’re just pointing out the differences and claiming GBA did it right/better. However, there is some interesting info to consider.

I have a GB Scandinavian Forest axe and the counciltool Woodcraft pack axe. I can tell the American made Council tool is far superior, better steel and axe shape, it splits better and GB has chipped the edge a few times now. I still like Swedish knives though, their axes are made for much softer wood.
@WR3ND

Axes in general really. The GB axes in particular though thanks in part to their quality, but of course also promotion and use by Ray Mears (bushcrafting royalty) and more recently Wanglerstar (21st century KZbin homestead manly man). They're good axes, but more importantly, people these days are fruitcakes that have lost touch with reality and are desperately grabbing at lifestyles and cult followings to fill the void.
