In today’s video Karl takes his Gränsfors Bruk Hunters Axe as his only tool and spends a normal the day in the woods performing everyday tasks to see how the axe copes. He gives his thoughts as to whether it’s a viable buschcraft tool and compares it to the more popular Small Forest Axe. He talks a bit about what’s on his mind and just has a nice time in general. Thanks for watching folks.
For Karl’s opinion of the GB Hunters Axe skip ahead to 18:37.

I’m not one to make comments usually but video started really slow for me and I found myself wanting to change it but you had captured my attention with the mental health and great story about your mate. You seem like a great dude and the rest of your video actually showed off some of your skill. I want to be in the woods now. Thanks buddy! We need more good friends out there appreciate it.

Great video Karl. The axe is a beauty . I think the more you use a tool the more it becomes part of you, the muscle memory and the grip give you a greater understanding of the limitations and the techniques you can use . Great to see you highlighting mental health issues , there should be no stigma attached to talking about it ,we all go through it . The biggest killer of men is silence! .

Thank you for teaching axe safety! So many other videos just start chopping without explaining the right/safe way to do it! Excellent video man! Also talking about reaching out to others during their hard times was an awesome touch. Thank you for doing your part to make the world a better place. I've noticed when I help others my difficulties seems to lessen or even disappear. God bless you!

I absolutely love my GB Hunter's axe. The handle is what made me fall in love with it. To me, it's perfect for what I want to use it for. If one is having trouble driving stakes and such (and let's be honest, it is more likely to glance than a flat poll), they can grind the poll flat, won't have to remove too much material, they can fashion a whammer out of another piece of wood (hammer-like objects are not difficult to make), or carry another tool.

Nice Vid. Which axe do you think is the best for Backpacking mainly for fire/tinder purposes: Small Forest Axe, Wildlife Hatchet, Hunters Axe, Outdoor Axe? The Scandinavian Forest Axe is too large for a pack. Thoughts? They all split about the same right? Thanks!!!

Well done Karl 👊 always a good topic to mention. Couldn't help but notice when you where felling the tree you didn't strike upwards with the axe. Any particular reason why?
@beoutdoors5938
@beoutdoors5938 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Kerley thanks man. On smaller trees like that there’s no need really. While yes it was edited, it really didn’t take any time to take that tree down. On smaller trees chopping down on the same spot will give you similar results as chopping down and then up. On larger stuff, yes, you definitely have to give more consideration as to where and how you chop but truth be told, I coulda pushed that thing over when I got half way through it. I just wanted to test the axe👍👍 Hope this helps, cheers Jason.

With handle of such length standing on your knees is a way to go. The handle is just not long enough for comfortable reach standing and you prone to miss more.

If you didnt know, that axe is for processing wild game hence why its razor sharp when you buy it new. The rounded pommel is for hitting the hide to pull it from the carcass of a deer, moose ect and it's intended for splitting ribs sternum and frozen carcass meat. The handle is designed with this in mind and is also design to prevent slipping from playing in blood ect. It's a butchering tool. It's not really used for camp. You use it for processing animals and clearing small limbs when hunting from a tree or the ground.
@FrankGUNstein
@FrankGUNstein Жыл бұрын
That’s partly true.. it’s a field dressing / butchering tool that is also intended for wood prep etc (from their own website explains as much) it’s not as good all rounder as small forest axe but I think it fits a great niche if you want something with a little more finesse

CaniTrekking there was a very slight angle from a less than perfect hang but it was very small, not noticeable unless you’re looking for it. It definitely wasn’t handed though😅 I’ve had the wildlife hatchet and I’d have this over the wildlife as it’s not heavy in the slightest but packs much more of a punch. Having said that, the wildlife is great too so you’ll still be getting a great little hatchet👍 Thanks.

@@BlairStOnge Somewhat. It’s designed to be a game processing tool doubling as an axe, just as much as it’s designed to be an axe doubling as a game processing tool. It does not necessarily have a primary function.
@BlairStOnge
@BlairStOnge Жыл бұрын
@@whengrapespop5728 it’s not doubling as an axe. It’s literally an axe designed for butchering. As an axe, it can also be used for bushcraft because axes are the tools preferred for bushcraft. However, this a axe was designed for butchering animals.
@whengrapespop5728
@whengrapespop5728 Жыл бұрын
@@BlairStOnge Bushcrafting is a hobby, a label, not sure why you’re bringing that up. Any tool can be a “bushcrafting” tool, but some axes are designed to be able to craft better while others are designed to chop or split better. This axe, as stated by Gränsfors Bruk themselves, is designed to work well with wood and meat, with a rounded flay poll to prevent potential damage to skin when separating it from the body. It’s not primarily a butchering tool, it’s just a tool (axe) that is designed to more efficiently process game than other axes. Axes have always been tools for butchering alongside woodworking.
