I got my small forest axe about 35 years ago. I don't have the occasion to all that often but it's still a favorite & works as good as when it was new. Since then I've added two more G.B.s to my collection. They are worth every penny.

That's a great review. A lot of people want to see a thorough look into these 2 axes and will want to watch a load of footage of someone swinging it which you did very nicely. 2 nice different tools there and I'd find it hard not to keep both if I was you!

I agree... but the Scandinavian is significantly heavier. You really notice the extra weight, especially on foot with it awhile up and down some mountain sides. If I have my Scandinavian, I'm rolling with a minimalist kit because I can't do the heavy packs anymore. I don't have the SFA but really want one now for size and weight purposes. Pair it up with my lightweight, GGK SFFT Khukuri.... functions and looks 🤌

Dazzy I have both the Scandinavien Forest Axe and the Small Forest Axe. I also have the Outdoor Wilderness Axe and the Mini Belt Hatchet. I really like the Mini Belt Hatchet for everything, from off task duties like cutting up cardboard boxes for the trash can recepticle, to chopping head off fish, boning a deer pelvis, kindlin. and I can choke up on it for tedioius work. I would grab it for self defense to. I got a custom belt sheath for it at Treeman Knives in the USA. He is out of Michigan.

Yes Dazzy. The forest Axe is the best all rounder for me. Little tip wrap your axe in a scrim net when attached to the outside of your pack, it will help minimise people's freakout factor as the axe will not be jumping out to the eye against the green of your pack. Then when it gets cold in camp you can use the scrim as a scarf. The only problem now is someone will come across that log you were working on & think a mad beaver was there having a chew haha!

Tip: don't cut 90 degrees against the grain. Cut in a V-shape. That's how axes are designed to cut. Much easier for you and the bit. Thanks for a good video.

I recently bought a helko werk traditional black forest pack axe for my dad. I was actually looking to buy myself an axe. I like the heads on the heavier side and a lot of swedish axes are a bit small and light for me. The German Rheinland pattern is great for chopping since it's a wider bit. Barely used it but I was impressed. Also it was only 80 euros plus shipping.

With the Scandi axe I would suggest not even attaching it to your backpack, rather I like to feed the sheath's buckle around one of my belt loops. It's pliable enough to bend out of the way when you sit and it's definitely not going anywhere. I feel like I even remember seeing Gransfors suggest this in the little book that comes with the axe. Good video buddy!

Nice vid mate. Love axes. Have those 2 and the mini hatchet and wildlife hatchet. They all take it in turns. Quick tip to make your SFA handle darker and more pleasing on the eye. Get some linseed oil in a dish or lid, then mix a little ash into it and rub into the handle. It will darken it down. Remember to polish it off after half an hour or it will be sticky. 👍🏼

I'm a pretty strong dude, and typically do longer expeditions, hunting included. My pack is typically much larger; it's a larger Karrimor Predator, and it averages out at about 100L, though it can carry much more, especially with the PLCE. I typically go with the Scandinavian and their Outdoor Axe, and if hunting serious game, bring the Hunters Axe as well. It's a lot of axe, everything has its purpose, and I believe strongly in having decent redundancy. The Scandinavian is worth it for the extra power, and everything that is typically too small gets easily handled by the Outdoor Axe. The Hunters Axe is perfect for processing heavy game, so much so that it pays for its own weight during those trips, and the Scandinavian is what you want if you are processing a lot of forest, especially for longer trips. I've considered the American Felling Axe, but that typically is best served for really serious stuff, and is a bit too heavy for bushcrafting. I typically strap the Scandinavian and Hunters to the outside of the pack, and sling the Outdoor on my belt.

Hey, great review! I have the scandinavian axe and an extra scandinavian axe head that id like to rehandle again, but I am wondering if the scandinavian head would fit on a small axe handle. I know there is a weight difference on the heads, around 100g+, but what about the eye? Does it seem like it would work?

If I only take one axe with me, I opt for my Swedish made Hults&Bruk 26” 2LB. I love the feel and wight, if you like darker wood, i sand the handle down then burn the wood very carefully to bring out the grain and finish it off with boiled linseed oil, the wood looks like zebra wood, beautiful…..

They sell axe sheaths that go on your belt loop. Your axe slides into a loop. You can use the top buckle as your belt loop. Then hold the axe handle down with the second strap. Point the axe away from you for safety. Plus you can leave the original sheath on the axe to protect you from the blade. I hope what I just said makes sense haha.

Remember that the Scandinavian is designed for softer European trees. The American is designed for North American hardwoods. For me, when I go camping in the woods, I mostly use an axe to collect firewood by chopping off limbs or splitting up small trees. I’m not felling large trees, so the small is good for me.

I hope you're fine. I will suggest a few tips & you do as you wish after. For cutting a tree trunk, may it be standing up or down, one as to do it in a wide V shape. Let's say a tree on the ground has 6 inches diameter, your V shape should start 6 inches wide(4" for 4", 8" for 8", etc). I saw when you cut from right to left your angle is good, but from left to right your angle is too perpendicular with the truck. Yes it's not easy to put an angle from left to right, but you better get used to it & your general cutting efforts will get much better. Once you've reached the bottom of your V on one side, turn the truck & do an other V shape on the opposite, tree down or up walk around. No need to hit the middle, aim to make the V shape even if you might have to hit twice on one side, eat in one chunk at the time. You're going to remove bigger chunks=cut faster & better. On big trunk you will have to make a few V shapes one following the other because of the width limit of your axe edge. For branches, attack on the wider angle side if there is one & shave using the trunk as flat axe head landing of your blows, not fully you'll lose energy, but a little. So that kind of ricochet will hit hard on the branch. Take care :)
