That 1st beat is the pure embodiment of Hip-Hop consciousness and all the old, dusty vinyl that it was created from. You really hear the spiritual form and the magnificence of the EMU SP-1200 shine through on this beat. Grap is a true King. It has been an honor designing some of your Black Cat DJ flyers!! www.blackcatdc.com/shows/close-to-the-edge.html

+Sir Donald Dust instead of being a smart ass and saying a bunch of ad-hominem nonsense, why not use your damn head and realize that Grap Luva can't afford to be sued just so you can know what sample he used... The only high horse is the one you were riding on when you thought you deserved something that you don't.
@sirdonalddust40888 жыл бұрын
The 'high horse' remarks were not intended as ad hominem. They were directed at the conceited notion of sample exclusivity, and the role that other people play as self appointed police enforcer of these notions. Let us move on.... This riff actually is not some rare gem. It is one of those songs, that many people will know, but may not remember the name. One of those ' on the tip of my tongue' type memories!!! So what , if thousands of people know the source, it is not like they can do what Grap Luva did with it. Being exclusive with a sample source is akin to not wanting people to know that a song is in the Key of E and uses the II, VI, IV, I chord arrangement. Or it is similar to saying because Rothko painted a series in all black, no one else can explore all black paintings. Or, saying no one else can paint on doors because Jean-Michel Basquiat did that in the 80's. etc etc Consider the fact that One artist produces a song in the first place, and then another person effectively steals it, [even if the sample is cleared later, the original artists work has been taken by another] to make their own production. So now , IF that person who has taken someone else's work, attempts to claim exclusivity over the sample, that they freely took, they are acting rather hypocritically. If it is alright for them to use the sample it is alright for someone else. However, i do not think your were necessarily asserting that position. Your argument, that it is not so much the exclusivity that is the issue, but more the hard work they put in to find the sample is valid and I can concede that. However, there are more complexities at play. The original artist deserves to have their hard work producing the original track respected. And then another thing to consider is this. Most confident and successful artists do not feel, that by sharing parts of their work, be it sample sources or techniques they have mastered, that their position among their peers or audience, or their earning power, or indeed the creative juices that drive them, are some how threatened. In fact, it is the opposite that can occur. By sharing and/or collaborating, creative juices and artistic respect, are often increased. A perfect example is Jimi Hendrix, who, as a guitarist was well and truly streets ahead of his contemporaries. Yet Jimi always had the time to teach others what he was doing, and he never considered that his place at the top would become less secure because of it. His creative torch could not be extinguished by showing others his choicest licks. Even if there was a chance the artists he shared with, could then write a song from what Jimi had just taught them, that made lots of money, he would still always share. Jimi worked hard, very hard, and was on struggle street for many years. He had to leave his country to make it. Yet he did not use that hard work as a justification to not share with others or teach others. he never considered himself above others. So, serious doubts are held, that Grap Luva would even care if someone recognised the sample anyway. It is not like he chopped it so severely to stop it being recognised. Grap's track is being sold on iTunes, so the sample has been cleared, which means divulging the information will not see him prosecuted. As I said in the beginning, it is not a rare sample. It is just one that is escaping the memory at this moment. [for some reason I keep thinking it may be The Fugees or someone like that from the 90s] However, you can rest assured, if Sir Donald does remember it, or hears it, he will share it with you, if you so desire.
