Michael Mendillo I don't take this song as being racist or seeking pity. he says something is holding him back and the question is "is it because I'm black". not because I'm black. basically what I took from it is don't let that question poison and cripple you. it's easy to fall into that kind of trap.

Song isn't racist at all---it's a valid question, one I ask in the third person all the time: "Is it because they're black?" Most of the time, the answer is "yes." The conditions black people face every day are worse than the conditions faced by any other group. You can't name a time in this country's history that black people got an even break. I'm not asking you for examples---there aren't any.
