At first I figured it was because I did some minor text animation because it jammed up right there on that text layer so I deleted the text and re-did w/o anim. No change. God, this is maddening. 5-6 minutes to process 5-6 seconds of project is completely untenable. Already checked the ae community. No help. Just tons of tedious hoops to jump thru.

your video didn't help in my case, but i discovered my problem. don't know if someone will use it but i'll comment anyway. last week i was troubleshooting an error i had with AE and one person told to activate compatibility mode in the program shortcut to open as windows 7, i did that and it didn't work but i left that way. some time later i fixed the thing, then i noticed after effects was taking like 1/2 seconds to respond EACH click i did. it was bad. today, trying to fix it seeing your video, i remembered and deactivated compatibility mode. fixed instantly, i'm reliefed, AE is fast (kinda), all good. probably no one will find this useful (too specific) but that's it!

Great tips, thanks! For me, the culprit turned out to be the Libraries panel. Try closing this if After Effects is sluggish when you're working on a project.

Hey, I've got a weird problem I thought this would fix but it doesn't. I have to work with a template. When I have that template project imported, not even being used, just imported, I make a new comp and a text layer. The text takes 10 seconds to register a key press. I remove the template and it's back to normal. What's processing?

The fact that your menus react quickly shows me the lag you have is minimal. My lag is so exreme in After Effects the menus don't always respond and clicks only happen after 5 seconds. Not sure if the wacom is making it worse, but its pretty horrific lag. A fresh install doensnt even fix it.

Do you have 8GB of ram? That is the bare minimum for AE, so unfortunately it'll always be slow with that much ram.
