In this video you learn how to graph rational functions with a highest degree of 1. The graphs of the rational functions can be difficult to draw. To sketch a graph of a rational function, you can start by finding the asymptotes. STEP 1: VERTICAL ASYMPTOTES - Use Simplified Equation. Set simplified equation denominator = 0, solve for x. STEP 2: HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES: Two Cases, use Simplified Equation. 1st - Degree of Denominator is equal to the Degree of Numerator will be y = ratio of leading coefficients. 2nd - the Degree of Denominator greater than the Degree of Numerator will result in y = 0. Second, find the values of y, for different values of x. Plot the points and draw a smooth curve to connect the points. Make sure that the graph does not cross the asymptotes.
