the way he respectfully "gently puts down" the MMA dude when he picks him up from the ropes as opposed to slamming him is highly underrated. He had the confidence that he would win

He probably didn't even think of it because he was happy with the control he had. Slamming would have been either super effective or resulting in a control loss, much more chaotique.

4:33 The MMA dude was Wanderlei Silva. Unfortunately contrary to your expectations, Yoshida lost to him two times. Actually Yoshida didn't know the teqnique of slaming at that time because it had been just 1year since he changed jobs from judo to mma. He quit judo in 2002 and this match was held in 2003. That was just 4th mma match for him.
