Today we fly the Vans RV-12 to the 97FL Loves Landing Fly in in Weirsdale Florida! 97FL is a hidden aviation community with two beautiful grass runways, and each year they hold the Wings over Wiersdale event.
Each landing is a competition graded from 1-10, and it can be challenging as the runway is hilly and requires a good soft field and STOL technique. Watch the single engine (RV, CTLS, Waco Biplane, Cessna 120 140 172 180 185, Glasair, Mooney, Comanche) and twin 310 land and judge them for yourself. This video is a great compilation of perfect soft field landings and take offs.

In the 80s when I was flying did a lot of grass strip take off and landings, day and night in south east Florida with a 172. Didn’t seem to be much of a thing then. Good practice for emergency landings.

Enjoyed your use of the 360 degree panning shots. I've seen it done poorly a lot...you did it well! I'd really enjoy seeing a fly-off comparison of the RV-12 vs a Cessna 152...especially comparing the quality of ride in the bumps and crosswind, and general comfort for cross country

Great video. I have amazing memories of X04 along with some great friends that own a beautiful hangar there. My first solo was at KLEE in a Cherokee 150 from D&J Aviation. I've been to Love's Landing (by car LOL) when looking at an Aeronca a few years back. Ended up buy an Ercoupe out of X23. I now live in the upstate of SC so flying weather beginning to get spotty around here. I do miss Florida flying so enjoy!

Forgive my dumb question but can a light jet like a Grippen or F-16 use that kind of runway? WW1 type biplanes look super cool! 😎
@fantabuloussnuffaluffagus
@fantabuloussnuffaluffagus Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the F-16 needs pavement, but the Grippen would likely be OK if the runway is long enough. The question is can the runway handle the Grippen. I've seen an F-5 take off on grass and when he rotated the afterburners tore up the grass something fierce. The grass was probably not suitable for another takeoff or landing by a jet after that.

great landings... i noticed that most of the tail draggers dumped the flaps as soon as the wheels touched down... any specific reasonfor that as opposed to jsut leaving them in until they're "off the runway" like normal?
@johnwilcox2239

This is to dump lift, so the tail will drop quickly, and minimize the risk of nosing over when breaking.

@@johnwilcox2239 Correct to cut lift by cutting the flaps. They do it as a habit to put the weight on the tires on paved surface. bUT.. But on soft fields, it is better to leave some flaps out instead of no flaps. Do you know.. on high wingers, what happens to the nose and the tail when flaps are cut at landing speeds. And when flaps are pop, what happens?
