Remarkable. I'd be pissed if I were that enemy crew: you're one of the few planes in the whole Reich at the end of the war to actually have the fuel to fly, and just weeks before the end of a war in which you've likely fought for years, you get shot down by some cowboys in a glorified kit-plane with pistols! @iuvenis animo Codes and laws . . . ? They strafed citizens with machine guns, bombed hospital ships, shot down planes that were carrying humanitarian aid and torpedoed ships full of food that was headed for populations that were already being starved to death by Nazi occupation. My faily is from Liverpool, UK - a place that was heavily bombed during WW2 and my grandmother ( who was born in 1920, died 1996 ) LOVED to tell people the story of how she had to run along Bold Street and dive into a shop doorway out of the way of a german Stuka that had dropped it's bombs and then carried on diving, specifically to fire it's machine guns at fleeing civilians. It was total war, for both sides, in air, on land and at sea. There is no chivalry in mechanized warfare. Not in a war where a 20 year old sewing machinist could have ended up bleeding to death in a shop doorway, having been killed by a german guy who had probably never even seen an english woman up close. Maybe they were a bit more chivalrous than the guys getting rained on in a trench in France somewhere or the fella driving a Panther tank through Holland, but let's not put our rose tinted glasses on just yet eh? lol

Just to put this in context. We are looking at a period of history were we have air combat with aircraft like the Spitfire, the Mustang and the Focke-Wulf 190, some of the finest piston engined aircraft of that time and capable of 400 plus MPH, not to mention the first jet fighters. And to contrast that we have an example of the sort of aerial duel first seen in 1915. What's more the aircraft in 1915 probably flew just as fast. All I can say is hats off to them both. Also were they credited with half a kill or a kill each. 👍
@aquila44605 жыл бұрын
Well, both the grasshopper and the Storch where specificly built to have max speeds close to most planes stall speed and being able to land on extremly short runways. Hell under the right conditions, a strong frontal wind, the storch can actually fly backwards, just as an example just how slow they could fly. The perfect spotter airplane.
@arthas6405 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised he didnt mention a similar battle that happened on the Eastern front where modern fighters got in a dogfighter with some old leftover WW1 era bi-planes... and the bi-planes won. They were slow as hell but they could turn on a dime and simply pivoted out of the way and shot back after the much faster modern planes zipped past. If you've ever seen dog fights in World of Warplanes where 1 person has a piston aircraft and the other has a jet fighter you'll know what i mean.

I would imagine that the storche was kinda low on the priority list for mg-15's at this point in the war, would have come in handy in this particular engagement though. Besides, I'm sure that all parties involved would have felt that one mg was pretty optimistic and would not really have huffed over them getting reallocated.

I know it’s most likely apocryphal, but I remember reading a supposed account of a German Me-262 pilot on attempting to shoot down a spotter plane he’d come across on his way back to base. The two parts I remember most distinctly are that he was actually unable to hit the little prop-job, even after 2 passes (most likely due to the spotter plane having far better maneuverability at low speed and altitude than the early jet) saying that “it was like trying to hit a butterfly with a battle axe”, and that after each pass he noticed the observer of the spotter plane firing a short burst after him, “almost as if he were thumbing his nose at me in derision”. After two passes, he was beginning to run low on fuel and had to give up and head home, but he noticed the spotter give a short wing-wag as he turned away. Regardless of whether it’s true or not, the sheer absurdity of that story has made it stick in my mind for years now; I still chuckle a little every time I think of it.

Yeah old friend of mine is a veteran of World War II and he was a member of the 29th division fighting in the Saar Union area. He said every afternoon a storch would fly over them and he said then the artillery would hit them. Hey said yeah we called him bed check Charlie. So we had had enough of it. So, we got a half track with a 50 on it to wait on him one afternoon. He said we got him. The pilot jumped out and landed right in front of us. His chute didn't have time to open ...

Now this is something different. Reminds me of the story of the B 17 bomber name, Old 666 "dog fight in the Pacific Theater, where this huge four engine bomber took on a flight of Japanese zeros and Rop fighters in a loped sided dogfight and shot down five, and survived it. Resulting in several Medal of honor and desingue flying Crosses Medals. These were brave warriors. What these brave pilot did was some thing like counting coup on your enemy by the Native Americans warrior. Finally, an true quote " it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of fight in the dog that wins".
The fact it was loaded down with . 50 cal in every possible spot, including nose, spare waist guns and more helped.. It was most protected B17 ever.
