Since we have finished this standout look at Americana and the beautiful mosaic that is America... Which Grateful Dead album should we tackle next? OR maybe some live stuff? Let me know what you think here.

"Blues for Allah" is an amazing GD album--- I would describe some of it as psychedelic fusion... AOXOMOXOA is excellent, too-- intensely ethereal and psychedelic.

Workingman’s Dead is like the companion album to this one, recorded in same year. But if you want to do live here a suite that has many delights and is also smokin hot. It’s like 40 plus minutes lol but you asked. Playing in the Band / Uncle John's Band / Morning Dew / Uncle John's Band / Playing in the Band - from Pauley Pavilion, UCLA (Los Angeles) - November 17, 1973

I recommend the classic triple-live Album "Europe 72". Often counted among the greatest Live Albums ever. This Dead album helped establish that the LIVE versions of their classic songs were often the best versions. There were several other classic LIVE albums as well, but "72" is my favorite. Among the best Dead Studio Albums, "Working Mans Dead" is the great followup to the classic "American Beauty".

Nice to hear side 2. “Ripple” is my favorite. Listening to the Grateful Dead is like putting on a favorite sweater or jacket or poncho. Warm, toasty and home.

This is a lovely album. CSN did work with the Dead for harmonies before this record. Jerry played pedal steel for CSNY (Teach Your Children). Maybe you’d be interested in Wake of the Flood. It was the album after Pigpen passed. My favorite Dead album will always be Anthem of the Sun. I love the blatant psychedelia. Go to bed, Lee. ✌️
@michaelwebster8389
@michaelwebster8389 Ай бұрын
Agree with everything. Anthem of the Sun was what turned me onto them, unfortunately in another country so never got to see them. Wake of the Flood is one of my favourites too. The Dead didn't have the voices of CSNY, but they definitely had a lot of the same musical sensibilities, though they were far more creative and disregarded the rules. Obviously as instrumentalists they were utterly unique.

"ripple" is my favorite grateful dead song. the "american beauty" album was featured in the series finale of the short lived cult classic tv show "feaks and geeks" about high school kids in 1980-81. **spoiler alert** in the final episode lead character lindsay is given the album "american beauty" by her high school counselor, and she immediately falls in love with it. lindsay finds out she's been granted an academic scholarship, and is set to spend the summer at "math camp". her parents drop her off at the bus stop,but after they drive away she gets off the bus before it departs. "ripple" plays as lindsay instead gets in a VW van with some new dead head friends,and drives away to follow the band for the summer. a lot of people wish there had been a second season,but i think it was the perfect way to end the show. after months of confusion about life since seeing her grandmother die, lindsay finally found happiness thanks to the grateful dead.

Truckin is sort of autobiographical. The busted down on Bourbon Street is a reference to the Dead being busted in New Orleans. Next album: Either Workingmans Dead, which was released before American Beauty and has a lot of country, blues, folk and rock, Europe 72 ( the original release) which is live, or if you want old Dead, the live 1969 album called Live Dead.

Grateful Dead refers to an individual who may have passed on but had debts or obligations in the mortal realm. some living person pays off the debts for the deceased who is then grateful dead or gratefully dead. that's where the name comes from.

Doesn't look like anyone has mentioned that the Dead had been busted for drugs in New Orleans, and Bobby and John Barlow put this song together after that. Ps trucking was twice as long, they cut it down to 7 minutes for the album.

deadheads, among whom i count myself, know the great soul-moving stuff happens at the live shows. BUT i've long maintained it's good to know the crisp, clean, studio versions to "overlay" those live shows on to. i bet "ripple" is one of the most played songs at funerals these days...such wistful sweetness. i consider workingman's dead a companion for american beauty. fun to see you exploring the dead and zappa - my two favorites.

Just remember that the song Truckin, I think is one of the Grateful Dead‘s biggest hits, at least played on the radio. That and Casey Jones, until the late 80s when they re-released a touch of gray, which hit the charts.❤ that was the era when I first saw them after Brent died, and Jerry died, but came back to life.

Although he does not actually appear anywhere on this album, David Crosby is all over the vocal performances, especially on this side. They recorded this the same time and in the same studio where CSNY were recording Deja Vu and Crosby's first solo album. Crosby said that the band knew how to sing, they just needed a little guidance in how to perform harmonies. This is the result. These songs have what I think are Robert Hunter's best lyrics. The next album would obviously be Workingman's Dead which was recorded just a few months before and has much the same feeling. If you want a longer version of Truckin', check out the version on Europe '72. It runs somewhere around 18 minutes. It was definitely one of their show stoppers and there are hundreds of live versions out there.

You made a joke about why they were called "Grateful," but the name actually comes from a very old traditional story. There are lots of variations, but generally a father/king sets his sons on a quest to determine the heir. As they set out, they pass an old/injured man on the side of the road and while the older sons ride past to pursue the quest the youngest stops to give aid. He put the man up in an inn, administers medical care, and, after the man dies, gives a proper Christian burial to the stranger. He then resumes the quest even though he's sure that his brothers are hopelessly ahead. On his journey, though, he receives aid from random events, kindly animals, and even strangers, util he, ultimately fulfils the quest and returns home to take his place as the rightful heir. Upon return he comes to realize that all the help he received was at the hands of the spirit of the man he helped in the beginning, the Grateful Dead.

You have pretty good intuition. Often do, but don't always agree with your ramblings...but in this case there was a really cool one, really important too imao: oral history lasts longer and is more accurate. I am no expert, but have spent years as a teacher of reading and writing in the schools. Reading myth, being around language, whatever but it is pretty damn cool that you got there too,. This is a branch of a tree called We Used to Know More. Despite our technology--which has its place--we are moronic and proud of it, for the most part. Fun to be a part of it, but our mental acuity has suffered horribly.
