These were my first shows!! When my friends asked what I wanted to hear I said Ripple…they all busted out laughing. Thank you for bringing back great memories ❤

It's wonderful to finally hear this crispy soundboard. Great 4 night run, my only trip to the Cap Center. As I was exiting the building after this show, I observed more than a few people in tears. This ripple certainly stirred up emotion. I mean seriously, I saw a few people actually bawling their eyes out.

I saw several hundred people disintegrate emotionally after a JGB performance of "Forever Young" on the Eel River outdoors in Northern California. Quite a sight, lol! My favorite reaction was when I dragged a reluctant self-described "guitar virtuoso" to a JGB show in Santa Crux in '82, which had the very rare feature of Lesh performing on bass. My neophyte friend was utterly humbled by Garcia's ability. He came from years of very formal musical training, where blues was strictly played one formulated way and jazz another, etc., and consequently played very formulaic music in a very predictable but accomplished way (the type of guitar player Garcia used to contemptuously described as "someone with nothing to say"). After the show, the guy was very quiet and withdrawn into his thoughts. When we finally got him to talk, all he could say in utter disbelief was,"My God, the guy can play the guitar any way he wants to!" Still makes me laugh to this day!

This version was done for a Make A Wish request of a kid dying of cancer. I was there. It really was something. Is it any wonder we love them so much? It makes me think of the early 70s poster I once saw that said "The Grateful Dead - Jesus's children of Paradise."

As they broke into Ripple, I recall watching the definition of the isles become fuzzy and disappear as people went crazy, danced and sang. The loudest crowd reaction that I remember to a song at a show. Pure pandemonium! Camp Dead was rocking afterwards.

@@guineveregruntle6746 I think the Box of Rain breakout at Hampton (3/2086) after 13 years of silence was a louder more excited affair. I was at both (God I’m lucky) and yes, the Ripple was everything you described. It was amazing But Jerry Band, Jerry and John etc. never quit playing Ripple as the years went on. Box never got a lot of time in the GD set lists up to 1973. Phil had quit singing. It was such a great joyous breakout of a song that never should’ve gone away. And never did after Hampton. Regardless, there was only one Grateful Dead and when they wanted to make songs touch gold, they knew how. And bless my boots I was there for two of em.

Thanks so much for posting. The Capitol Center '88 shows were indeed the Boys back at their peak, a full 2+ years after Jerry recovered from his diabetic coma, and just as they were starting to contemplate running through old classics with Brent (which they did in the fall of 1989). The Ripple was "rumored" to be a Make A Wish foundation request from a dying Deadhead. Even if it wasn't true...I always wanted to believe it. You always wanted to believe things about this band (-;]

Yes, i do recall this "bombastic" run in Maryland... i managed 2 of 4, & this was at the ass end of an 8yr. ride on the road w/the Dead. Little did i know a son would be born to me exactly 1yr. later (9-3-89)... it was only then i slowed down, a bit... Even though My memory has left out too many of the chapters thru these years, i do remember the openers, a Franklin's that wasn't born from help>slip, miracle, Dew, the Rip- ple shit that shut down some of us. Catatonic Dispair consumed my reason & some of my motor skills during most of drums/space, i felt compelled to hide in a restroom. And even though GDTRFB was calling me out, i failed convincing myself that all would be o.k. until i heard the opening chords to M.Dew. It was then i bolted outta the confined safety of the restroom & deceided if i could only make it to my seat w/out being spotted, I'd be safe for the duration of the show. Yet this show was a proverbial return to the spacing & fluidly spent shows i recall in early to mid 80's. In a sense, death & rebirth, all because i took too much, perhaps for granted as well. It was also a night for some personal 1st; Foolish Heart, Victim and the fire from Ripple, too hot to hold, pass down a beer. Yet, Maintained i did, saved i was once again, & life's weirdness would continue on as would our existence and the ongoing conversations with nature & colors that occured for me from time to time... especially in those days, strange indeed... whata trippy avenue that would have never been if folks, my people, hadn't seen, shared, and fed me... they picked me up after my left pickd' a fight w/my right foot. Yet, i was inspired, as always to Not equate & worry about $$?, share the wealth, my time, the abundance of Yummies & Goodies that flowed, so that tummies would glow w/the thoughts, so that happiness and golden hearts would prevail... And the Lord did Grin...

My very first Dead show!! Went in solo because some of my friends were more concerned about spending their money on some tiny pieces of paper. Never found out what that stuff was but seems I remember it being pink and green camo. Very nice besides being solo but mad some new friends and had an incredible time. I was a whole 18 years old and thought I knew it all The Grateful Dead saved my life and opened me up on so many different levels. I miss it and so far ,,I wouldn't change it for the world. Maybe for the world I would change it but, nahhhhh, wouldn't change a thing

The captal center was likebeing in Nazi Germany. Only Bryndyn Bryine in 1983. Where the guards killed some poor dude. And threw his body into chemical wasteland. I remember speakers outside this arena saying "Remember you are in the real world. It was the worst guard presence I felt since Bryndyn Bryne. I always wondered how the band felt abiut this shit

For 1988 and having been there, the video is just fine. None of the videos that were bootlegged back in the 80s could capture Candace Brightman’s amazing lighting. You had to be there to realize what a fantastic lighting designer she was. As far as the sound goes, they blew the roof off the Cap Centre that wonderful Saturday night! One of my top 10 of over 100 shows.
