I love when Jerry talks about the drummers in the begging and you can see he's tripping on acid trying to explain it but you can't explain that, only feel it.
@jg66982 жыл бұрын
Why do you kids constantly insist all members of the Dead are on acid 24/7/365 back then? You sound ridiculous. They weren't, in general, and Garcia said they never tripped when performing after the very early days. Particularly in a scenario like this. You embarrass yourself.

there's a part in the booklet for Aoxomoxoa, which i have in front of me right now, that talks about them playing that night and part of it says: "As the band played on, the artificially festive atmosphere gave way to something that seemed more authentically wild and unscripted. Perhaps it was just the power of the music - or maybe it was resulted, as has long been rumored, of some special refreshments that unkown members of the Dead's enteroughe generously shared with the other guests..."

There's another video of this event that includes _St. Stephen_ and you can see Pigpen playing the bongos. Quite a demotion from his previous role as keyboardist. I remember one night at the Fillmore East, when the warmup band was a so-so blues band. When their set was finished and the Dead were onstage, the warmup band's fans -- occupying the front rows of the theater -- began heckling, bigtime. They wanted the Dead OFF, and "their" band _back!_ (like _that_ was gonna happen!) After this went on for more time than proper, Pigpen got really pissed, went to the front of the stage, grabbed the mike, and began giving those fans a good what-for, in no uncertain terms. After this went on a bit, Weir went up, took the mike away, and said, "Don't mind him, folks. He's drunk." Ah, memories...

When leave a computer at a library I always leave it with a paused view of most of the band at the point when Jerry first sings the first syllable of word "Mountains" because Tom Constanten is looking at the camera therefore as I said it's a great shot of most of the band from this "Playboy After Dark" show! I remember seeing that show in general myself, however given that I remember my parents disallowing me to stay up late enough to see Star Trek so how it was that I managed to see any episode of this program I can't say? I very well may have seen this actual episode since what I vaguely remember seems to appear similar to the other tunes they played, namely St. Stephen and Lovelight? Or am I deluding myself just because I'm positive I saw at least some episode of this program but obviously I can't say for sure if it was this particular one given that I was only 9 years old at the time! A great performance, especially in this solo by Jerry accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. We've become so familiar with the later concerts, such as the one that I photographed them up close in 1976 in the Paramount Theater in Portland Oregon. I should put a link up to that photograph it's a wide panorama of the stage, some years after this I believe because I can tell they've aged a little in my 1976 concert photo. Also I should mention I found this video today because a friend sent it to me in a larger site where they were displaying another number that they performed for Hugh Hefner and the crowd here. Now forgetting to mention something that was important though, that I met Jerry Garcia's daughter when she came to speak in Portland Oregon Powell's Books in downtown, it was a huge presentation with other Saturday Night live people that appeared with her. I had to walk over to say hello to her quickly because I'm a professional astronomer and lecturer. I asked her if her father was an amateur astronomer because of what he mentions in that Dark Star number that they performed live so many years ago. She said her dad would take a telescope out into the backyard and have them observe through it often. It was just an honor to talk to Jerry's daughter, for a few minutes. I've come back to briefly edit. Here's a link [below] to that large panorama but it's the pictures backwards because it's photographed over the light table from the emulsion side of the film and I forgot to flip the image back to proper orientation, so it looks as if they're all playing left-handed guitars. I have the proper image reversed in photo memory but you can't put a photograph into comments here in KZbin only address links you can see all the concert Photography in my Facebook album titled concert photography.] g2.img-dpreview.com/3AC953B828D44DEAA0BD08B5F88721F0.jpg

Me neither. There are only a handful for me that fit that designation, most of whom I am related to. Garcia is one of an even smaller group I'm not related to that I'd like to still be around. Early in my life, he became for me the correlative to many new places of exploration I had no sense of previously. And I trusted the guy because he was like an aggregate of everyone I knew growing up in San Francisco. I never met him, but he spoke a language I understood. This was in high school. And I'm 18 years younger, so they were already past their first heyday. I don't know- you never know about these things though- it's now impossible to imagine Garcia as an old man and what that would be like. He's, as he's always been, frozen in our memories for a reason I guess. When the time comes- and if that includes some kind of all-encompassing awareness, we shall find what we had been seeking.

That's right. Bear (Owsley) got the coffee pot that everybody was drinking out of. I searched for years when I was a trader of the band, for this (like the lost arc pretty much), and I could watch this over and over again. Hef's posture during Mountains is priceless, trying to sway but still very stiff. I wonder what was going through his head as Jerry sings the line "The earth will see you on through this time" other than "dirty f@#$ing hippies!"

Slight correction: "Playboy After Dark" was not taped, as stated above, at the actual Playboy Mansion, but on a set in a Hollywood TV studio, decked out to look like Hef's swingin' bachelor pad. Tom Constanten has commented amusingly on the cheesy artificiality of the whole endeavor - noting, for example, that the art director's idea of a state-of-the-art hi-fi unit, visible on the walls behind the band, was just a phony, flat piece of stage dressing, as were all the books on the shelves elsewhere on the set.
