Yes... Jerry was missing most of his middle finger on his fretting hand. His brother accidently cut it off with an axe while cutting firewood. This puts him in my pantheon of amazing guitarists with missing/deformed fingers along with Django Reinhardt and Toni Iommi.

He's missing the middle finger on the right hand. Probably makes his finger picking harder, but on the bright side, I think that's where he conceals his pick so he can seamlessly switch between the pick and finger picking.

yes Jerry is missing a finger. And yes the Dead are the gold standard for jam bands if not the original rock/folk jam band. Many have come since but the majority of them will site the Dead as the influence. My friends growing up were into them. I've been to 2 Dead shows and for me the experience of them live is really what their music is about. Don't get me wrong I have many Dead albums including some really good live ones from Dicks Picks including Cornell's Barton Hall 1977 show which is viewed by many as the creme de la creme of live shows (although I know there will be many others who will argue about that statement)
