This is a great long jam from the 12-31-1978 closing show at Winterland Arena , San Francisco.
The Grateful Dead's performance of "Not Fade Away" during their December 31, 1978, closing show at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco stands as a quintessential moment not just of the concert, but of the era it symbolized. This rendition of the Buddy Holly classic, transformed through the Grateful Dead's unique interpretative lens, was not merely a song but an elongated, transcendent jam that epitomized the band's ethos of musical exploration and communal experience.
The "Not Fade Away" jam at Winterland was emblematic of the Grateful Dead's ability to take a well-known song and expand its boundaries, exploring new musical territories. The performance began with the familiar, catchy rhythm that had the audience clapping and singing along, but it quickly evolved into something much more. Jerry Garcia's lead guitar weaved through the melody with both precision and whimsy, taking the audience on a journey that was at once comforting and exhilarating. Phil Lesh's bass lines, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann's percussive backdrops, and Bob Weir's rhythm guitar provided a rich tapestry of sound that allowed the song to breathe and expand.
As the jam progressed, it became a reflection of the Grateful Dead's journey, from their early days in the San Francisco psychedelic scene to their status as elder statesmen of rock. The interplay between the band members was intuitive, showcasing years of playing together and a deep musical bond. The performance was not just about the notes played but the space between them, a hallmark of the Grateful Dead's style.
The emotional weight of the occasion added depth to the performance. As the closing show at Winterland, this rendition of "Not Fade Away" symbolized an end and a beginning-acknowledging the venue's historical significance and the countless memories created within its walls, while also looking forward to the future. The chorus, "Not fade away," became a defiant anthem of persistence, echoing the band's and the counterculture's resilience.
Ending the concert-and effectively closing Winterland-with "Not Fade Away" was a poignant choice. The song, with its insistent beat and communal feel, invited the audience to become part of the music, blurring the lines between performers and spectators. This interaction underscored the sense of community that the Grateful Dead fostered throughout their career, a legacy that would indeed "not fade away."
In summary, the "Not Fade Away" jam on December 31, 1978, was more than just a musical performance; it was an event that captured the spirit of an era. The Grateful Dead's rendition was a powerful, improvisational masterpiece that celebrated their history, the closing of a beloved venue, and the unbreakable bond between the band and their fans. This version of "Not Fade Away" remains a testament to the Grateful Dead's enduring influence and the transformative power of music.

I always loved the slow building of the intro back then. Coming out of drums it would dance and meander into the first verse

John Cippolina is the biting guitar corresponding to Jerry's straight ahead NFA virtuosity. I dare ask is that Dan Akroyd playing harmonica?
