"When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry's long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this Scarlet Begonias was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song." - David Lemieux

@@LibertyLynch The band always had an idea of what they'd play for a given show, but their improvisational style, & their tendency to wander into their vast repertoire of songs (be it their own or others) on a whim... All things considered, it's a feat they were able to recall the lyrics as well as they did 😉. The music actually did sometimes "play the band", a kind of phenomenon between band & audience no other band ever took as far as they did & something that, when it occurred. could never be reproduced in recordings regardless of sound quality & the main reason most didn't care if the lyrics weren't always correct, methinks.

Jerry Garcia will always live in the hearts of all Dead Heads. Then, now and eternally fond of the band As we all get Older in the way, of Dead and Company, we must remember Jerry Garcia's been recorded more than any other artist which means that there is 500 thousands ton of steal your face music put there at your fingertips. GD4Ever thanks for reading JD. RIP my best friend Steve Woods.

I wanna know who the fuck shot this! This is from 1974! I wouldn't believe it but Jerry still has dark hair and Donna is singing. Absolutely unreal video of an unreal band! Thanks to whoever shot and most likely restored/cleaned up

I was only 4 days old when they did this show. When I was an adolescent I used to wear Grateful Dead t-shirts that I bought at a flea market because I thought the skeletons looked cool. When I was in college and into grunge, thought they were boring AF. Then many years later, I came to the light. ;)

Such a great live band. I remember hearing them for the first time inside a VW bus. I was about 19 and the driver explained that the only way to listen to them was either at a concert or bootlegged copies that were hard to get. You had to commit to following them to be able to enjoy them. A lot easier now.

Ahh, 1974, the year I finally saw the Dead, I bought tickets in December 1968, but the Promoter was fake & then I got tickets for the weekend of my 18th birthday in 73, but that show got canceled. In May of 1974, my Bay Area cousins came down and we had a family picnic & of course a bunch of us cousins snuck up to the bushes to smoke my uncles pot & my cousins invited me up in a month to go to see New Riders Of The Purple Sage & The Grateful Dead!! What a show, and a year later I moved to the Bay Area, and saw them constantly, as well as seeing JGB in Berkeley at the Keystone. Yay!!

I still to this day 40+ years I cherish being at in SF for this run of shows! And, AND _ it’s 10 months after I climbed up the fire escape of the Boston Music Hall for the beginning of their Wake of the Flood Tour. For our after-show excitement we, me and three from NYC, roamed their floor at the Hotel. Garcia was lingering out in the hallway and I walked over, stood so close to look deep into his eyes [met Garcia at their Hotel after 12/2/1973] I’ll never forget his Chester cat Grin :) it was my FIRSt Dead Show and I am forever grateful ☦️

The thing that I love the most about The Dead is that I know all the songs, but I can listen to the same songs and they are always a little bit different each time. Familiarity with the excitement of something new and unexpected. Nobody else has ever quite managed to pull that off so well.
