"A scrap of age old lullaby down some forgotten street." One of my very favorite Robert Hunter lines.

This line slays me too. I thought it was "angel, lullaby" ... even better IMO.

Why I love Jerry Sure, any band can take you to a place, with lyrics or music that transcends time. Again, every band can do this. What Jerry could do was take you past that transcendent point. When you thought you couldn’t get any higher, any happier, any more “enlightened,” yes you could. You could soar past that limit, hold this little piece of heaven in your mind, and just let go, even if just for a moment. That’s why I love Jerry Garica.

Ryan Giddings Well done.
@thelmachristian31388 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Giddings NO! Not just any band can take you to a place with music or lyrics that transcends time! If that were the case The Bay City Rollers would be mentioned in the same breath as Jerry and the Boys. I'm glad my generation had weed and lsd and left all the stupid drugs for generations to come! Was this a Spice induced thought?
@JoshDone8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Giddings BULLSHIT. Garcia wasn't Christ, Buddha, Moses or Allah. He was a human being - A musician, songwriter and human being. Placing the weight of "enlightenment" or "Transcendentalist" on him by so many Deadheads is one of the pressures that killed him. Think about that for a minute.
@rm11338 жыл бұрын
+JoshDone C'mon man, Garcia died because his cholesterol was approaching 300 and he had 85% blockage in his arteries which led to him having a massive, fatal heart attack. While putting him on the pedestal that many deadheads did was a gigantic pain in the ass for him and very misguided, it had nothing to do with his death. He smoked 2 packs of Camels a day, had an awful diet, and abused hard drugs for a large majority of his life. That is what killed him. Don't blame some nonsense. He would laugh at that.

I was 17 at this show, my first. The Who was in town that weekend too, across the parking lot at the Vet. Both venues are now gone, replaced by soulless corporate branded boxes. It is truly sad how far the quality of life has fallen since then.

" I hear the cries of children and the other songs of war" are some very powerful lyrics and hearing Jerry sing them is a total fucking tear jerker. It makes us (by us I mean Americans, westernized, the fortunate) realize how well off we have it and how most of the problems we face pale in comparison to what others face on a daily basis. I realize I'm pointing out the obvious just wish I (we) could get this message through to the rest of the assholes that inhabit this place.

Do you ever go to a first concert of a band you had not yet listened to and one song is a stand out. This was that song for me at the Omni in Atlanta in 1994. The lyrics are pretty much unbeatable.
