Fell in love with this song the first time I heard it on a bootleg. It broke my heart when they changed the arrangement a year later. I always thought a good question for Jerry in one of his interviews would be why did they change it? It only lasted this way for a tour in 73’ but the energy was fantastic.

Agreed, very much preferred the up tempo version of this song. Was happy to see Dead & Company rolled out the up tempo version during their Summer 2023 Tour. Same with Friend of the Devil which got progressively slower over the years almost to the point I found it very hard to listen to.

I don't mean to be negative but what I was really getting at is the fact that I LOVE this song when it's upbeat and really can't stand it when it's played slowly. :-)

most of the early 73 ones are. they were already starting to slow it down by the end of the year but i haven't figured out yet when exactly it was completely changed. there was only one played in 74 and one in 75 which while it has the diff. format, now that i'm listening to it on archive, actually has a mean fucking groove too. anyway, yeah, probably any 73 one you can find will probably be like this :)

I love how I loath when this song comes on anytime post 77, but I hear it now (72-74), F:))ing awesome, phils bass with jerry, smokin'! guitar. That is the joy that is the dead.
