MIND CONTROLLED HELICOPTER - DOES THIS THING REALLY WORK?

Hey there, so I'm the main person behind the team who created the Puzzlebox Orbit. Someone sent in a link to your review and we had a great time watching it! We laughed, we cringed, and we took lots of notes to make our product better! So first off, you didn't do anything wrong. Or at least not in the sense that it should be so easy and obvious to use that nothing should be so confusing or frustrating! For us just getting to see someone go through the process is incredibly helpful and now we have lots of ideas for what to improve next. That said, here's a couple tips if you decide to revisit using the Puzzlebox Orbit: 1. If you leave it turned on for more than 20-30 seconds, it will go into standby mode, meaning it won't fly until you turn it off an back on again. It will just sit there happily blinking at you. So get your kit all set up and wait to turn it on when you're ready to go. 2. It definitely can't respond to voice commands and as you mentioned it's best to try to sit still and not talk. You can blink, but the less you do the better! The reason is that an EEG is really just a voltmeter that measures tiny levels of electricity produced by your brain (millionths of a volt). When you move your facial muscles that also produces electricity (EMG) which needs to be filtered out. The EMG is many times "louder" than EEG. It's like someone yelling in your ear while you're trying to hear a whisper from across the room. So you can move and blink and so on, but the signal is cleaner when you don't and the result is that it all works better. 3. At one point you faced the camera to the screen and it had the "Meditation" detection set to 10%. That's crazy low and no wonder you weren't able to make it stop! The ranges are: 0-20% very low 20-40% low 40-60% average 60-80% high 80-100% very high ...so in other words, we start with an Attention target of ~72% by default. That should be a good general setting for most people where the Orbit won't fly until they are really concentrating, and it will stop when they break their focus. If you put either slider at 10% it is practically like just turning it on (c: 4. Think of the EEG as a microphone being held up to a drum. If you beat on the drum randomly, there's no rhythm or beat. We can hear the difference between that and a fast, steady beat (focus), or a slow steady beat (relaxation or clarity). The actual algorithm is a bit more complicated than that, but it's the same principle - we're trying to pick out a consistent pattern within all of the "noise" being picked up by the EEG. What that means is it isn't enough to just think "fly" because that's thought doesn't last long enough or form a pattern. But if (in your head) you are doing the alphabet backwards, or thinking of all of the multiples of 7, or trying to name all of the streets in your town from one side to the other, or imaging you are packing for a month-long road trip and thinking of everything you need to bring and where it all is in your house - there's a steady train of thought going on. That forms a pattern, and we can detect that in your brainwaves. 5. Last thing, once it is flying if you are having trouble making it stop, I usually like to look around the room or out the window. That seems to break concentration well enough to be detected and cause the helicopter to land. If that's not working try increasing the difficulty level. You can practice tuning everything without the helicopter turned on too. 6. Okay, okay last-last thing. There's a button marked "Test" or "Test Flight" depending on your devices. There's also an "Advanced" (or "Options") tab which has a feature called "Tilt Steering" -- which together does just what you were asking, allowing you to just fly the helicopter and steer it around by tilting the tablet or phone. If you use "Tilt Steering" at the same time as EEG that's how you can control where it goes. It actually is possible to steer with just your mind, but *not* with this particular EEG headset. You need several more electrodes over different areas of the brain. Unfortunately no one is making such a headset for anything but research use just yet, so it is very expensive. But give it time and the technology will keep getting better! Thanks again for a good laugh and very helpful review!

Bunny you shoud do a second part to this, it seemed like dogman was doing pretty good with is aside from the breakable items you have in the room. Try mounting the camera in a high area in your living room or kitchen so we can see both of you and to avoid breakable items from damaging :) as always great video!

I don't think you're supposed to think 'fly' or 'don't fly'. It's about how hard you're concetrating on a thing. When you were freaking out your brain waves were stronger, so it kept flying. When you gave up and just wanted to move the camera, your mind calmed down a bit so it fell. Pretty much it's 'I'm thinking really hard about a thing!' or 'I am not thinking really hard about anything particular." I'd love to see you improve on this at some other point in time :0

I'd say it's gimmicky but he seemed to know when it was going to go up or down when he was controlling it :0 because he was focussing very intently on the feeling in one small part of his body (concentrating really hard, kind of like doing complex math in your head like you mentioned earlier). the device doesn't understand english or commands. You use focus and control. The device measures your control and focus via brain waves and transmits it to make it fly based on your concentration. So try not to tell it commands and stuff, instead just focus.

I agree, it also seemed like it was working when she focused on something like the app or was trying to figure out how to make it fly, and then when it started flying she got excited and it stayed up. But when she tried to move the camera and film it, she lost focus and it fell. When she was trying to tell it to stop flying I thought she was just too focused on bringing it down (which made it keep flying). Just my impression.

You and Dogman are so cute together! On the mind control helicopter: It may be that the anxiety that you experience causes you to have more brain activity - thus the hyper flight. Did that make sense? What I am trying to say is that the device might have been interpreting the activity of your mind in its standard state of being as "fly." Then when you try to make it fly, the effort of concentating on the helicopter may calm your mind enough that it actually ends up doing the opposite. Does that make any sense at all?

That helicopter is basically a shitty version of the necomimi. They're cat ears that move according to your brain activity. They're really easy to learn how to manipulate.

I don't know if this is the case, but it looks like it operates on BioFeedback principles... I'm a mental health therapist and use a biofeedback system at work called HeartMath that uses a similar ear sensor (that program is great for helping people with anxiety/adhd/ptsd/etc.)... it uses Heart Rate Variability to illustrate internal "Coherence"... I bet that helicopter is doing the same thing... When he was focusing on his toe, he was using a mindfulness technique that was bringing him into this coherence and triggering the device... basically, you have to regulate the distance between your heart beats (not as hard as it sounds) by breathing slow and steady and bringing your mind into a neutral space (which doesn't mean 'clear,' just neutral - like thinking about your toe)... the copter thing was also using neural feedback (forehead sensor thing) - not as familiar with how that part works, but I'm guessing pretty similar to the heart-rate feedback (you have a pulse point in your ear lobe - that's why there's an ear sensor). That thing looks really awesome - I bet it would actually make for a really neat therapy tool.
