Grave of Sam Starr

This cemetery has some big Old West history in it. There are two Cherokee outlaws interred here that are father and son. Tom and Sam Starr. Both men had a major influence on the female outlaw Belle Starr. Sam married Belle after her first husband was killed.

Sam Starr's marker was a little difficult to read in person. His correct dates on the marker are Nov 24, 1859 as his birth to Dec 17 1886 when he died.

There are outlaws buried there, but I don't think any of them were being honored. History is history, they lived they died, you can't go back, and change it. Thank you for watching Brenda. Some cemeteries are full of history and this one has a lot especially for the size. Many of these Starr's in this cemetery were involved in the Cherokee Civil War, American Civil War and outlaw ways. Then from there there are many stories from veterans and people who had lived later. It's a great cemetery to visit.

Another awesome video Rhett! I have been told that the Tinker buried there at that cemetery is a relative of General Clarence Tinker and I have been told that Clarence Tinker was only one-eighth Osage Indian and had some Cherokee Indian as well on his fathers side, but claimed Osage Indian. Please do not quote me on the information as I have not been able to verify just what I was told. I am friends with a family that is third/fourth cousin to Will Rogers and this is how I was told about General Tinker having some Cherokee Indian in his blood line .

I wasn't sure on General Tinker's bloodline but knew that he was Osage. He has a cenotaph monument in the cemetery but there also other monuments and family members in the cemetery. I figured he was not full Osage but didn't know for sure. I need to go back up there some time and do more stories. Thank you for watching!

The old west and Elvis. There's an odd combination. That's interesting. I've obviously heard of Belle Starr, but never really thought about the family around her and what their story was. Sounds like she wasn't the only notorious one in the family tree. I bet you are right about Lowery too. Maybe went missing in action and never recovered. Great to see the cemetery is well taken care of, especially considering how old it is. Once I get caught up on comments going to do some binge watching. I know there's quite a few new videos.

I think he is buried in Dewey Oklahoma ..he was killed by a bank manager in Harrison Arkansas during a robbery…Henry also was known to be the first outlaw to rob a bank using automobile..he also was in a silent film once..

Listening to your dialog about the early Cherokees in Indian Territory and the treaty of 1846 between the two main factions I was reminded of something I read in a book about the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. There were Cherokees in both the Union and Confederate forces. At one time during the battle a Cherokee on the Union side recognized another Cherokee on the Confederate side. He broke rank and started running toward the Confederate troops, when told to get back in rank, he told the commander, I've wanted to kill that SOB for 20 years and today I'm going to do it. Evidently the treaty didn't heal a lot of the animosity of the two sides.

Very interesting I appreciate your closing the gate. My ancestors served in the ANV and the Army of Tennessee. They didn't own slaves but saw the Federal troops as invaders as VA had told Lincoln not to send troops through on the way to SC

It's a rough time in American History and the ripples of it are still being felt today. You can't help where you are born and raised. Each side fought for what they believed in and many didn't really understand why though. Just part of war and serving sometimes. But I'm thankful for both sides. Ultimately we did unite. And think of how different things would be if the country had split. Neither side would be as powerful as the U.S. is now. Conflicts such as WW2 would have been very different if we were not United. @@RhettyforHistory yep I agree, VA and NC both voted to remain and when Lincoln made his demands on them went out. The country would be very different if we hadn't had the War. The real change happened as we prepared and fought the Spanish American War. Still until recently we weren't ready for a major war but we could gear up on Supercharge.

My Great Grandfather was Joseph Carl Starr he was cousin to Sam and Henry Starr. Joe was an Oklahoma Outlaw as well.

I used to have some friends that were Youngers that lived on the Illinois River. They said they were descended from the Younger brothers. I don't know if where they lived was at Youngers Bend, but the river did bend there.

As far as I know there were never any Youngers who lived at Youngers Bend. It was just simply named in their honor. Kind of like how we see Lincoln Blvd or Martin Luther King Blvd in many cities. Thank you for watching!

Tom was my uncle.... Decendent of the Starr and Adair bloodline. Nancy Ward was our grandmother when Caleb Starr married Nancy Harlan. Pretty crazy to think the devils own was the same blood as the beloved women of the Cherokees!

Quantrill's Raiders were not allowed to sign the Oath of Allegiance , because of the Kansas Raid. That is why so many became outlaws. Most changed names and went to Texas and California. The movie Ride with the Devil has some facts right.

There is a book in our towns Library about stand watie. And in this book there are some stories about some of the people you are telling us about in this video. There is a building in my town that used to be a boarding school. Stand watie's daughter went to school there in the 1800 s. I live in Berryville Arkansas so I'm not real sure why we have so many books about Indian Territory and people like Belle Starr and Sam Starr and stand watie. But I'm glad that we do have them because they are very interesting to read. I used to live in Siloam Springs Arkansas and West Siloam Springs Oklahoma. And where I lived in West Siloam Springs, some of the Outlaws raise through that area and there is a cemetery somewhere near where I lived where stand watie is supposed to be buried. I never did go to that Cemetery though. You asked for some of the names and that book. Some of the stars were mentioned and there was a u.s. marshal that came after stand watie. he was wanted for an incident that happened at the courthouse in Tahlequah. I believe Sam Bass was also mentioned in that book. I know that some of the Stars there in that Cemetery and along with Belle Starr hung out and around a town that is south of Siloam Springs. I really do not remember the name of the , there are some pictures in that book. the only thing left in that town or of that town it's a building that used to be a school that is privately owned now buy some people that made it into their house. at least that's all I remember being there last time I was through there. I wish I could remember more names that were in that book maybe I can check it out of the library again and let you know. sorry I'm not much help but my memory isn't what it used to be. may I ask where you're from in Oklahoma? I grew up in Oklahoma City that moved to Arkansas in 1977. and I'm learning more history about Oklahoma then I ever did when I was living there. you would make a good history teacher sir.

I am in Oklahoma City. I have always been fascinated with Old West history and so much of it happened in Oklahoma. And because of that a lot of it is in Arkansas as well. I love breathing life into these old and forgotten stories. I have a lot more to cover in Tahlequah and the Cherokee. Stand is one I definitely want to cover.

When his time comes, will "Ringo Starr" be buried there? LOL! Didn't Sam and his gang try to rob two banks at the same time in Stroud, OK when a 17 year-old shot and wounded him? That was an interesting story in its own right. The kid who shot him was criticized about it I read, which is strange because it was before FDIC insurance. The kid grew up and was the father of one of the first Flying Tigers pilot who helped out in China against the Japanese.

Is there an online article of that story you are mentioning? That does sound fascinating but I have not heard of that incident. Sam died in 1886 and I can't imagine there being two banks there then. Might not have even been one as the town was formed in the 1890's. Could this be a story of Henry Starr? That is a relative of Sam's.

I have a question u say Sam Star is buried here in this cemetery so tell me something I live in roland oklahoma and there is a outlaw by the name of Sam Star who is buried in roland oklahoma cemetery so can you explain that to me it even says on his tombstone that he was assassinated

That is interesting. I have not heard of this Sam Star but I see on his marker where it does say assassinated and he was married to Nancy. It's certainly in the Cherokee Territory but the last name is spelled different. It does make me wonder if he is a relative of this Samuel Starr. Do you by chance any more history on this one in your town?
