Honestly even the "weak" books get better after you restart the series again. You then realize how far back some story threads go. Your admiration of Jim Butcher will increase.

Its pretty fun to check the wish list for future books here, because Butcher fixes most of these things - for example developing one of the more rule-bound and limited magic-system apart from Brandon's.

Godmother and a lot of the other characters get a massive amount of development later. Also the early books spend a lot of time trying to establish what sort of things Harry can do and the limits of those powers. I would say by book 5 he has to start getting much more creative with what he has as opposed to pulling new abilities out as the plot requires. Great review as always though.

I don't actually mind that Harry gets help. Everyone needs help from time to time. It is just that help from the Fey usually comes at a steep price. So it is not like he just gets busted out of a problem for free. He is going to have to pay that price sooner or later.

Oh, the character drama gets really intense and the godmother stuff will all make sense in later books! Everything that seems a bit cliche now is done on purpose to kind of flip it on it’s head later. Also, the writing is going to get ALOT better, everything gets more intense. I can’t wait for your review on Changes ( the first book without the same # of letters in each title word) it’s the climactic peak to a gigantic arc that is happening throughout every book up to that point!

She's a Faerie Godmother and the next book deals with faeries. I think it might be expanded some, though the Never Never is still a funky place because thought can remake it to whatever the thinker wants. Also, don't worry, Harry is the magical equivalent of a computer nerd (he says so himself). He talks at great length about what magic can and can't do. Also, book 3 doesn't have the sexy vampires. Book 3 focuses on the Reds. The White Court (especially House Raith) are the sexy vampires (actual incubi and succubi, I believe). The Black Court is Stoker vampires. He wrote Dracula with the approval of the White Council as a "How To Kill Vampires" manual.

Heck yea, Dead Beat is one of the strongest in the series, along with Death Masks. Seriously, the only weak ones are Fool Moon and (maybe) Ghost Story, and even GS holds up really well, I just didn't enjoy it as much as Changes. Stick with this series, by getting through Fool Moon you're through the rough patch. The rest is all uphill, with maybe a few roller coaster bumps here and there. This review made me want more Dresden, time for another reread!

I think Michael’s character was a very nice addition to the story. I really liked his character and the contrast with Harry. I just finished the book and I had exactly the same feeling: it’s getting “out of hand”. The magic comes out of nowhere and he is just overpowered. Let’s see how it will go after that. BUT, even with these flaws, it is very entertaining and I’m anxious to read book 4. I wonder when I will start to get utterly disappointed 😂 p.s.: the water thing with the Lea character was horrible 😂 I was like: WTF just happened? But again: I liked the book a lot and I’m enjoying the series so far. I know this video is old, so I’m really curious how the series keep up on the next books 😂

In reference to the remarks on Lea. One thing about Dresden Files, which I'm sure you grew to understand over time as you read the series. Is that Butcher is using more on folk stories and mythology to formulate this world, rather than using traditional modern fantasy. So have to look at it from another angle, rather than what you expect things should be.
@edgardtheknowledgekeeper3119

The Magic is definitely much more solid than Harry Potter. The different uses become more defined progressively over time. It does have a whole lot of variety in its uses and it's uses by nonhuman beings seem less defined by rules but there are multiple reasons for that. As for the Nevernever it will be made very apparent that it's a very unpredictable place and is so on purpose because of the way it works in relation to our reality.

The subsequent books will keep bringing back previous characters and earlier concepts, which I love. As a fan of WoT, it was also a changer for me to not have this humongous cast with all of their own stories. Butcher does an amazing job making a cast of side characters who support the story and the world and those relationships evolve with Harry’s evolution as a character. It all feel very real. I agree that using the Godmother as deus ex machina is weird, but her helping ends up having plot building consequences, which is awesome.

UH... ok.. I've felt since book 1 that the magic system is pretty easily, cleverly, and obviously defined. Can't get magic from nothing, physics still exists, it takes a toll be it physical, mental, or supernatural, and without the legwork, the will, and the means, you aren't getting anywhere. So... hope this isn't an ongoing problem for you
@VRIceblast
@VRIceblast 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, not sure why you're having so much trouble with Harry using magic, I mean, he is a wizard, they do tend to use magic. Also, Harry will always be the guy with the worse luck, and is always fighting well above his weight class. The only reason why he's still alive is because he plans ahead. There is a lot going on that you don't know yet. Like with the God Mother. I think you should hold your assumptions, and judgment till you get farther into the series. There is a reason why many people think Jim Butcher is the best at Urban Fantasy. Think of his first 3 books as him still using training wheels. Book 4, he takes them off, and learned to ride, every book after that just gets better and better. I've never read a author, where each book was better than the last, when the last book was great.

Great review. It wasn't actually magic that saved the day in this novel but the power of love, however you feel about that trope. Definitely don't like Lea and she feels very much like an incestuous abuser and I don't see how she could ever be redeemed. I think Harry's ghost had the best quips in this one or Harry himself when he was mocking Kravos.

@@marktgreene In point of fact she really does. Deus ex machina is all over the place. Book 1, survives because the power of love. Book 2 Sword of Gryffindor and Phoenix. Book 3 Time Turner. Book 4 Fake Moody kept him alive every step of the way. Book 5 has it less but the Room of Requirement is still pretty convenient. Book 6 Luck potion. Book 7 Snape got the sword to Harry instead of him finding it himself and also he uses the power of love. Harry Potter is a good story but every step of the way Harry doesn't win because he's brave even really skilled. It's more because someone else tells him what to do or he's given something that fixes all his problems.

STUFF IT! I've gotten 10 chapters in on this dog and I'm not seeing improvement at all. I don't think I can stomach any for of this crap sandwich because some people on the internet say that there will be an improvement down the line. No. So far, Mister the Cat is my favorite character because he is the only one who has been true and consistent throughout. When I read Eye of the World, I was hooked. When I read The Hobbit, I was hooked. When I read Game of Thrones I was hooked... Storm Front irked me, it didn't hook me. Fool Moon irked me more. Grave Peril is already irksome and I am not even halfway through it. Maybe, after I've read something amazing and I want to further contrast it with something Meh, I'll finish this book.
