Winter is here and I needed to try and stay cleaner and drier when on my gravel bike! The reviews for the SKS Speedrocker Set were good so I took the plunge and bought some.
Unboxing, fitting, on the go footage, and final review all available here for your viewing pleasure. Have I found a set of mudguards / fenders that actually work?!

The rear mudguard (and front for that matter) is adjustable where the rods insert into the plastic housing, up from the mounting points. An Allen key bolt can be loosened. Tinkering around with that, basically adjusting it a few degrees (it clicks) from the 180° level, should alleviate the bow effect. In terms of similar adjustment of the front rods, it allows the lower section of the mudguard to sit tighter or slacker from the wheel, depending on clearance and road spray.

I did look at the rod housings and wonder but I didn’t want to break something accidentally haha. I will loosen them off and they will look 👌🏻 Thanks for the heads up and cheers for stopping by 😊

One other suggestion, I replaced the front Velcro with the same rubber straps used in the rear, which I found a bit more reliable especially once the velcro got muddy and wet. I’m sure I picked up the spare rubber straps from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op online, it was a couple of years back so can’t be certain. Anyway, this is the third winter I’ve been using the SKS on my gravel bike, not totally perfect but good.

@@SJ-tk4ri I kind of thought that would be the case with the velcro over time as mentioned in the video. I’m not far from Edinburgh so I’ll try and stop in one day or have a Google for some additional straps. It would have been easy enough for them to come with all rubber straps I think 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have had my set for two years now and not had any issues. I don’t use the extended bit on the rear at all as I didn’t like how it fitted. You may need to adjust the rods to stop them being bowed at the rear.
@thebikepackingdad
@thebikepackingdad 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris :) I’ve just transferred them onto my new Pinnacle Arkose and they fit a lot better. I figured out the rods to fix the bowing also! Better late than never. Glad to hear yours have lasted so well and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that mine do likewise. Thanks for checking out my little channel.

I didn't see the QR code but wish I had haha! I think depending on what bike you fit it to there will always need to be little adjustments to make it work. However, I am still using them on my adventures and they are holding up very well! Worth every penny so far. Thanks for the comment 😊

@@thebikepackingdad just fitted mine and rode 40 kms on muddy wet roads , very slight spatter on lower back ,but otherwise clean jacket, very rough roads , had to make some minor adjustments, few rattles , but the guards are brill as you say.

@@thebikepackingdad I think I'll bite it and just pay the astronomic price. What's the width of the mudguard? Not the tire, the mudguard. I might have issues passing it in the rear triangle.

@@JeanFrancoisDesrosiers So I have measured it as best I could do to the curve of the actual mudguard. I would budget to have a gap / clearance of 50mm. I measured it at 47mm but better safe than sorry!

That would be good! They are really good mudguards and it would make total sense for them to have a larger variety of sizes. I’m sure they would sell them!

10:28 and 11:11 How much were these things? That is some mickey mouse stuff right there. They look like they were a premium expensive brand. $85.99? That is some BS right there. Tax and shipping and we're talking a c-note for velcro fenders! Is this because you need it because the bike is CF or something?
@thebikepackingdad
@thebikepackingdad 2 жыл бұрын
These were around the £50 mark (free shipping) and I can see why you might think the velcro is a negative! However, having had them on two bikes now I have to say the velcro adds great flexibility and allows for very fine adjustments to keep the mud off. Plus, they really don’t budge! Once in place and attached properly they don’t move. Even on some really rough surfaces like my last couple of videos. Don’t knock them until you’ve tried them would be my advice 😉 I hope you liked some part of the video haha.

@@thebikepackingdad I did like the video, I just didn't like the "shilling" I googled these fenders and I took the first price I saw, which was $85.99 They've held up well?

@@tarstarkusz That’s fair enough. I appreciate the time you took to provide feedback. I’m pretty new to KZbin so all feedback (good and bad) is helpful 😊 They have held up very well so far and that is 100% truthful. They have been over some very testing surfaces and haven’t moved at all. I definitely come home cleaner thanks to them!

8:40 Here is some honest feedback. I absolutely hate the shilling. I know how to sub and i know how to hit like. When people ask me, it makes want to hit dislike, I'm not just giving you grief. This is the effect it has on me. As for your website, if I wanted to read about fenders, I would have googled it. But I searched KZbin. I want a video about fenders, not a website so you can send me emails every time you upload a video. Do YOU enjoy getting an email every time someone you follow uploads an article or video on youtube? i recon not. What makes you think I would like that if you yourself don't like it.

Hi 😊 Thanks for taking the time to get in touch first of all. Regarding the website - I enjoy writing as much as I enjoy editing the videos and I myself follow blogs etc. I totally get it’s not for everyone though and my more recent videos tend not to have the ‘plug’ in. Cheers for the feedback though.

@@thebikepackingdad I hope you didn't take it wrong. It's not criticism of the video overall, which was fine. I don't use a throw-away email and it can be overwhelming to get 20 plus unsolicited emails every day. A lot of people will not stop sending you emails no matter what you do.

Hi Roberto 👋🏻 The last few weeks I’ve had them on some very rough gravel paths / fire roads and mine haven’t moved at all! If you look at my 2 most recent videos you’ll see the kind of surfaces they have been on. I think if you fit them well and spend time to ensure they are right etc you will have no issues with them moving. Thanks for watching and getting in touch 😊
