Last year, when visiting the UK I bought a cheapish GRX equipped gravel bike. While I did many km’s on roads, some of the roads were so poor, I’m glad I had the tyres I had. Also, because I tended to let Strava choose a route for me and allowed it to cover off road gravel routes, I had the extra freedom to stay away from the main roads. I’m sure if I lived there I would have both. It also had the gearing, despite its slight heaviness to tackle steep Pennine hills which was most thankful. You two as well as Paul and Roy in many ways inspired inspired my choice to go gravel. The bike now lives with a good friend in south Manchester.

Thanks for commenting Neil... If we could only have 1 bike it would be a gravel bike. We know we are faster on our road bikes but not by much and they are much more limited. We enjoy the comfort of the gravel bikes too especially on longer rides 👍

Good to hear the Yee Haaas! are back! 👍 I reckon you don't want mountain bikes for the sort of fast paced riding you *usually* enjoy, but you know, a man, or a lady, can never have too many bikes, and finding an excuse to splash the cash and add another bike to the stable is always good after all - N+1 and all that 👍 Mountain bikes would bring a different mindset, a different type of riding fun - slower and gnarlier, but still huge fun. So, that's all settled then... I'll ring your local bike shop and tell them to expect you both very soon 😉😁 Good ride!

Hi Mike. You talked about road tyres for the Gravel bike. Which ones did you use? And were they tubeless? Keep up the great videos 🙂

Hey Duncan, they were 32mm Specialized Roubaix and we've also used Panaracer Gravel king Slicks. Happy with both options as they had a good footprint for some light gravel too. 😁

Disc brakes especially in wet are better than rim but seem to have way more issues. Often really noisy, wear pads far more quickly, need bedding in etc. I'm on one of the last Canyons with Ultegra rim brakes and no complaints. Maintenance way easier (I do all my own work).
@WheelersAtLarge
@WheelersAtLarge 5 ай бұрын
Yes Steve, these technologies are getting easier. I found tubeless needs to be ridden straight away to distribute the sealant properly as shaking the wheel doesn't seem to be enough, and sometimes needs a couple of rides before the pressure holds. Julie's brakes are the opposite, I pumped them up and left them clamped on over night and they're perfect now. I learn more and more all the time. Thanks for commenting.
@stevedouglas3975
@stevedouglas3975 5 ай бұрын
@@WheelersAtLarge I still use tubes, not sure about tubeless. You still need to carry a spare tube anyway so unless on gravel when a puncture is more likely I'm not convinced on tubeless for road. I know I have a rim braked bike and don't ride tubeless but I'm not a Luddite honest! 😀
@WheelersAtLarge
@WheelersAtLarge 5 ай бұрын
@@stevedouglas3975 I agree on that one, when tubeless was useless even on larger gravel tyres my thought was the same about carrying a tube. I've not used a tube for so long now that you've reminded me to check the ones I carry are still okay 😁👍 Just in case...

Re. Brakes. If you have an adjuster to change lever position relative to one’s finger grip position then set it at the end of the travel (as if you had the longest fingers!) and bleed the brakes. I had this issue on mine and just couldn’t get it sorted because the adjustment wouldn’t allow all the air to bleed out.

Regarding Julie’s front brake, if the pistons seem fine maybe a new hose and olives would sort it. Had a similar thing happen to me and that fixed it on my XT 2 pot brake on my mtb.

Great Couple, Great Cyclists ,Great inspirers. Thanks Julie and Mike for yet another entertaining /inspiring chatty cycling video. I still cannot Ride on loose gravel even though now I have a perfect bike for doing so, Giant Defy 3 Advanced with 32 inch tubeless tyres , Tell you what though it a much more comfortable bikeride on 32 inch tyres with there lower pressure , it’s like-cycling in your favourite comfy chair a home , I must admit Mike I did change the saddle that came with the bike for one off my old Boardman bikes , in the end I could not ride comfortably on long distances with the saddle that came with the bike . , Thanks again foe a great video

Thank you Peter, and it's great to hear you're enjoying your new Giant Defy. Yeah the loose gravel can be a bit intimidating and the chunky tyres on the gravel bikes inspire confidence but we have used the road bikes with 28mm tyres on "gravel sections" of rides and it's not terrible. Cheers 👍

@@WheelersAtLarge I’ve cycled through a few forest trails because there was no alternative route to my destination and the bike performed well but my nerves were jangling until I was back on tarmac, it’s strange really because I would sustained more severe injuries if I hit the tarmac hard but the chances of me falling of on gravel or mud are much higher, So it’s a case of “ Swings and roundabouts “👍

@@julie-wheelersatlarge I must admit for most of my cycling life I have inflated my tyres to 100 psi to protect me from punctures and gave me more speed but that pressure also gave me a hard ride in which I felt every small bump in the road ( lots of vibration through my hands and bottom 😂🤣)I’m pretty. Sure if I would have had 32 inch tyres at 75 psi on my bike when I had my accident I wouldn’t have slipped on the railway lines on the railway crossing I cycled over during a sportive , then again I wouldn’t be the stronger cyclist and better human being I am today if I hadn’t has my accident, everything in our life’s happens for a reason 🤔 , I guess it just our lives journeys are full of ups and downs and I have learnt it better to just go with the flow of life because you can’t change what happened yesterday,you can only go forward and embrace the day 🤗 😀, Take care Julie

Cycling through the Park bought back many memories for me guys. The road is now closed because it was being used as a 'rat run' at rush hour. Also used Twenlow for the same reason. In 1995 or 6 they raised the speed limit in the park, god knows why and that's when it started to become a shortcut. I go so angry one day blocked the road at the miniroundabout with my 110, and that stopped them for a few minutes. haha.. Moved to Partstone in 1952.
