In a cold environment this will crumble over the years especially during the freeze/thaw cycle because of water expansion and permeability
@julierosenblatt8865 жыл бұрын
Gravel-Lok has been successfully installed with great long term results in many areas of the country that experience freeze and thaw cycles. Since it's a permeable system, the installer needs to design with that in mind. Just like any other pavement, it should be slightly graded to allow water to flow away. If necessary, install drainage to help the water to flow away from the system. If these considerations are factored into the installation, there will not be any issue with expansion and contraction during periods of freeze/thaw.

I have a flagstone patio with small pea gravel between the flagstones - Can I pour the clear Gravel-Loc liquid between the stones to prevent the gravel from loosening and sometimes blowing around?
@GravelLok7 жыл бұрын
Carol, this is a very common application for Gravel-Lok! It would be better to pick up the pebbles, clean and dry them, and then mix the liquid with the pebbles and place them back into the joints. If you try to apply Gravel-Lok to the pebbles while they are in the joints between the flagstones it may be difficult to avoid getting the liquid on the flagstones (it will stain them; but that may be cleaned up quickly with acetone) and if the pebbles are less than 2.5" deep then you may also experience foaming.

What happens in the winter when it freezes and thaws with moisture in between? Is this only for warm climates?
@GravelLok4 жыл бұрын
Gravel-Lok has been used successfully in areas of extreme winter and areas where there are many freeze and thaw cycles. Just keep in mind the bonded layer is permeable. As long as the pavement is graded properly the water will flow away from the system and not cause an issue. If necessary, install drainage. If the water is allowed to puddle up in the system then it can cause cracking and heaving during periods of freeze and thaw. Most pavements are designed properly with proper grading and drainage if necessary.

Gravel-Lok is very similar in terms of flexibility to asphalt. Expansion joints are only needed in large areas (plazas, for example). @GravelLok3 жыл бұрын
Gravel-Lok performs well in northern climates with freeze/thaw cycles. It has a slight flexibility, similar to that of asphalt. Since it is permeable you need to design with drainage in mind. Pavement must be slightly graded in order for water to flow away and not puddle up within the system.
@GravelLok9 жыл бұрын
Many people have installed Gravel-Lok driveways. Like any pavement you would need an adequate foundation. We recommend our LSG-4, 4" cell depth load support grid. On top would be a 1.5" Gravel-Lok mixed with 1/8" to 1/2" clean, angular stone. Top that with a .50 - .75" layer of Gravel-Lok mixed with 1/8" to 3/8" clean, angular stone. Roll coat on top after 24 hours. The smaller the stone, the stronger the structure of the pavement. Keep in mind that over time some stones will come loose depending on the amount of use. Maintenance is easy! Please give us a call for further details 888-851-0051

Thanks for this. I'm in the UK where it rains, a lot. I want to re-lay an 80 yard gravel drive that was put down twenty years ago and has got grass and weeds growing in it. I did a very small trial patch yesterday. Jet blasted it, because it has become so compacted from vehicles driving over it and grass growing, took out the gravel, washed out the dirt and grass and put it back. Looks ok but was wondering....after you have washed your gravel you say you have to dry it before you lay it. Is this necessary? I could put it down dry and it would soon be rained on! In your case is it because you are going to add Gravel Lock clear? I wasn't planning on doing this. If I don't I assume it's ok to put the gravel back wet. Thanks if you can answer this. I would like to do a professional job like you've done here but don't have the time and the owner can't afford a professional job at the moment.

Could you make a driveway out of it? How much weight can it tolerate? A 5000 pound SUV? Or is it only for walkways?
@GravelLok4 жыл бұрын
Jon, this is an excellent question. Gravel-Lok has been used to create driveways. It can support cars and trucks; it is similar to asphalt in that respect. However, a greater percentage of surface stones can come loose and create divots, as opposed to a pedestrian surface. The weight and pressure of vehicle tires, especially where they might turn and grip the surface, can cause stones to come loose. This leads to more frequent maintenance if the owner is inclined to do so. We find that some owners choose to maintain their Gravel-Lok driveway annually in the form of patching divots and roll coats while others will wait many years to do this, because they have a higher tolerance for seeing some loose surface stones and divots. If you wish to know more about using Gravel-Lok in a driveway application please call us at 888-851-0051, thank you!

Dear Ivan, yes, a 1" overlay on concrete would be sufficient. First, make sure the concrete is clean and dry. Using a foam paint roller, apply a coat of Gravel-Lok liquid. While still wet, mix together your clean, dry pebbles with more Gravel-Lok liquid at a ratio of 20 oz. of liquid to a 5 gallon bucket of stones (around 50 lbs.), then trowel it out at 1" thick. Many customers have reported to us that Gravel-Lok was a lower cost option than concrete or asphalt for small jobs and it offers other advantages such as porosity and the ability to choose your own pebbles to create a more interesting look. For larger jobs it's safe to assume that concrete would be more economical option. @julierosenblatt8865 жыл бұрын
Hello! Gravel-Lok is a permeable surface, therefore weeds could grow between the voids in the stone. It will not prevent weeds from growing. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you!
@julierosenblatt8865 жыл бұрын
Weeds are not commonly found in a bonded gravel area due to the lack of soil; it's not an ideal environment for weeds to thrive. Since the pavement is typically 1.5 - 2" thick it is virtually impossible for the weeds to grow and penetrate up through the system. Nevertheless, it is possible for a weed or two to start growing from the top of the bonded gravel pavement, in a small crevice between the rocks. Since it's only growing from the top, these weeds are not well-rooted and easy to remove, root and all. Alternatively, a weed killer can be used. It will not harm the bonded pavement.

+jody sephus (Jodysephus) I'm not a Gravel lok guy, but I would guess it's because it's like a glue mixture and if you troweled it on dirt, it would get all over the place contaminating the gravel and making a mess. IMO

+jody sephus (Jodysephus) So the gravel doesn't settle into the sub-grade. The fabric creates a unified strength barrier from the subsoil below...especially in cases where there are clay soils.
@Frostified6 жыл бұрын
The resin will not cure properly if it is touching soil due to the moisture soil holds.
@floramazzi59556 жыл бұрын
The fabric prevents soil from migrating into the gravel & gravel into the soil.

It looks great wow

Made it as far as the fabric and already too labor intensive and expensive. Will do concrete with pavers over instead.
@shawnio6 жыл бұрын
so the gravel stays in place? this is insane
@officialWWM7 жыл бұрын
That looks very expensive and labor intensive!
@GravelLok7 жыл бұрын
Darren, Gravel-Lok is a low-cost alternative to permeable pavers and it looks far better than porous concrete. Gravel-Lok is an ideal solution for those instances where a permeable pavement is needed.

should compare cost of exposed aggregate cement to this product.
@GravelLok3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how the cost compares to "exposed aggregate cement". That option would not be permeable like Gravel-Lok. If permeability is a desired feature then "exposed aggregate cement" would not be an option.
@anthonyromano85656 жыл бұрын
It seems to me an exposed aggregate concrete would be cheaper and look virtually the same.
@EC_ATV_Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Thus seems like it would cost 3x as much. How much labour are you going to spend washing stone, drying stone, a large area of you lawn ruined by the plastic and stone to dry it. All the extra work makes this nit feasible imo. With all that said, it is a nice looking product.
@GravelLok3 жыл бұрын
It is true that washing and drying the stone is a tedious and laborious process and you need a space to do it which isn't always feasible. However, this is a necessary step to make sure the gravel is bonded well. In general, for medium to large sized jobs this is more expensive than concrete or asphalt. For smaller jobs it can be more economical than concrete or asphalt; it depends on the project.

SAME THING AS PERVIOUS CONCRETE?!
@GravelLok3 жыл бұрын
This is not the same thing as pervious concrete. Gravel-Lok is a liquid that bonds clean pebbles together but does not fill up the void spaces in between the pebbles which allows water to pass through them. The look of this type of pavement is vastly different from pervious concrete. This looks like loose pebbles but they are not loose; they are bonded together. You can use any pebble between the size of 1/8" up to 2-1/2". You can get creative and choose the color, size, and shape of stone! This is very different from pervious concrete. Gravel-Lok looks much nicer.

Tarmac but with epoxy instead of bitumen.

David. Could you expand on your comment, please? I have a concrete (impatterned) driveway that I need to cover - say, an inch or less deep. So are you suggesting mixing small aggregate with an epoxy rather than bitumen? If so, what epoxy? My driveway is 200 square metres, and the quotes I've had for epoxy have been laughable. Thanks.
