Coincidentally Intel CEO just announced today they will invest USD 7 billion in Malaysia, and production will start in 2023. They should have come to India, India has almost unlimited supply of engineers. Malaysia is a small country and I doubt they have enough qualified engineers, and their wages are much higher.

@@str5454 Really? TSMC already announced a fab with USA and in Japan recently. They are not coming to India and even if they did they'll be doing some assembly, packaging and testing in India along with TATAs I guess for the local market. Thus what TATAs are going to do is similar to what Malaysia doing now. Indian Government is arm-twisting FABs saying they'll be boycotting Malaysia because Malaysia taking about Kashmir issue. If TSMC comes up with a standalone Fab in India, that will probably be happiest moment in my life. That said, SCL could import ASML machines and try to make commercial chips. India actually don't need TSMC but TSMC could give a jumpstart to India's talent providing tech and logistics support.

It's not just chips, it's antiquated IP that the auto industry refuses to move beyond. The main fabs are more than happy to make newer, higher density IP, but they don't want to keep making the old stuff, and they're right. It's time for the auto industry to upgrade their technology.

I'm curious now. Would you be willing to elaborate on the higher density statement? Or a quick example?
@johnbartlet6669
@johnbartlet6669 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielmartin7838 Sure, most of the integrated circuits used in the auto industry were designed in the 80's and 90's. Most of the major auto makers have been buying the same chips for over 20 years. This is now antiquated technology from a silicon manufacturing perspective. All other industries that rely heavily on integrated circuits tend to buy the latest and cheapest. When things were just humming along as normal there was no great issue with the auto industry continuing to demand antiquated ICs, but once everything was disrupted, something had to go on the back burner, and it was the production of older chips. Now, the supply chain will catch up, I mean if there is a market the chip makers will meet it, but if the auto industry would start using newer IP, like Tesla does, they'd have less of an issue when global problems arise. It''s a dual problem of having an 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' attitude, and also not wanting to deal with the regulatory costs of certifying newer technologies for safety. The cost of a single silicon lithography machine runs into the billions, so the more everyone uses the same generation of lithography technology, the more efficient the system, and the fabs, the companies that own those lithography machines, can focus on making a single IC technology as cheaply as possible. Actually having to produce old ICs negatively effects the cost of all ICs.

Because manufacturing was not given importance vis a vis IT/software. Early efforts in late 80s during Rajiv Gandhi’s team ran aground due to politics, fire and apathy. We had a fab plant in 1988 at Chandigarh, which fell into disuse i guess after a massive fire in 89/90. India is behind in designing & manufacturing radio hardware for 4G, 5G also.

Indians still don't have a world class software product also. Little known fact is that India is the largest skilled-slave colony since at least 1498AD when Europeans started colonizing India. It remains the same even today in 21st century after 73 years of Indian Independence. India's so called IT Consulting firms like TCS, Infosys, Satyam Mahindra, Wipro etc. all engage in this 21st century high-tech slave trade. Indian CEOs and Directors at the high-tech giants like Google, MicroSoft, Adobe, Twitter, IBM, Intel, Apple etc. are all Indian Slave Wardens even today engaging in '21st Century High-tech Slave Trade' along with Indian Governments of various political parties including the current one. The time-frames to secure a citizenship now in many colonial countries is more than the timeframe set during ‘Indentured labor’ period. Thus there has been and there is slave-trade happening from India even today. That said I am not affiliated with any political party or any religion.

There is no comparison between India & China. Western companies are able to invest in India without Indian companies pirating their technology. India, despite it's problems with it's neighbours has no plan to subvert the west a build an empire. Mike, Automobile chips have sensors(analog chips for most part) and also thorough testing is required whenever they change nanometer...thinner chips have greater vibrations leading to faster chip damage. Thinner chips also have greater power densities. Why would someone want to invest so much to make those thinner chips of smaller tech nodes reliable? In the due course of time, automakers will borrow from the figher-jet companies all necessary testing technologies for thinner chips. Until then we may patiently wait for the first explorer car company going smaller-tech nodies. Until 2003, everyone used to think a smartphone is a power guzzler and nobody will buy. Now look at the advancements in smartphone battery capacities and power-saving features. In Auto industry also, we need one super-hero company like Apple or Tesla to push the chip tech forward in a similar manner.

You cannot solve a chip crisis by setting up few plants. It takes more than 1-2 years and a few 100 billion $ to fully commission a semiconductor plant. It takes 1000+ really trained professionals to operate such a plant. It requires very special gases which include some toxic dangerous gases, continuous clean cooling waters to run the semiconductor equipment. It is not as simple as what is mentioned in this video. I work in a top semiconductor manufacturing firm so I know what I am talking about. You can definitely start but it will take 5 years and plant expansions before you can seriously meet world demands. India on its own needs a lot so it will not have sufficient to cover exports. It will take 20 years and multiple plant investments to be able to move levers in the world stage.

China takes up a 4% market share only, and China is making low-end chips only. China imports 350 billion worth of chips each year and imports mainly from Taiwan. World's 92% bleeding-edge chips(used in smartphones, Weapons, Space projects, AI, and Supercomputers) are manufactured in TSMC, 63% of logic chips(used in cars, households, and others) are manufactured in Taiwan, from companies like TSMC, UMC, VANGUARD, Powerchip.
