This is so true, I have worked with a Japanese pharmaceutical company, they work at least 16-18 hours a day. And the worst part is Indian management also expects us to work like that since “Customer is God”. Resigned after 6 months, best decision of my life.

This is very normal in Indian Pharmaceutical companies, especially Indian Generic companies. On Friday, our Manager can cancel our weekend (i means sat and Sunday) because we have work. even they will hire a master degree fresher for INR 8.5 to 11 k per month take home. I know many people who is suffering from lower back pain, frozen shoulder, knee pain, there is friend of mine who started behaving like machine without any emotions after joining in Indian Pharma, because of this toxic work culture.. But what can we do, we have to earn the bread and butter for our family. India is proudly pharmacy of the world but at the cost of what??????

all these corporate rules are just to use common man at the extreme and extract all d juice out of him so they get satisfaction that whatever these corporates are paying for labour is utilised fully. you come 2 minute late to office and you get penalty in terms of your half day salary deducted, but same company will make you work 30 minutes,1 hour even after the working time without any bonus many a time. so basically its exploitation because these corporates have money power, political power to make rules in their favour and exploit common people.

Once I told my boss (ex-employer), that I am working for more than 10 hours a day, everyday, for last 6 months. For this his answer was 'I work for 12-14 hours and sometimes I have to throw my phone away at night'. I was shocked to hear this response. I never forced my colleagues or mentees to work even one hour extra, without any reason, I know what's average humans work capacity and it doesn't help anyone, physically or mentally. To be a Leader or Manager is your choice. Following what others are doing, or changing it for your own good, its a choice. I never scored a better result during performance appraisals. But, I know, I have earned better people. I tell this to everybody I interact "Choose health over anything, there are plenty of opportunities to earn and grow. It doesn't have to come at the cost of your health".

Interesting. My experience as a professional in the US is quite similar. This is especially true as you move up the corporate ladder. In my 40s I would work a full day, then go home. After the kids were put to bed I would get on my computer, often quite late, and answer emails. Now, email is a store and forward system. I expected to get answers back the next day or so. In most cases I got answers back immediately. My colleagues were on the same schedule. I also have had many experiences where I was on vacation, but still took part in meetings and answered emails. In many cases the connectivity was not good, so I had many problems on these vacations, and often got grief for it.

There are 30 vacation leaves apart from covid leave, paternity leave, family festival leave etc and people go for 14 days of mandetory leave once in a year. Bosses are supportive atleast they do not even speak in harsh words with subordinates because if an employee leaves , HR will grab his or her Boss's throat. Pay structure is cool ...Bonus at the end of the year is lucrative. But still I see a lot of people are unhappy and openly complains to HR meeting !!!

And besides everything that was said in this video, the truth is that the Japanese work exaggeratedly because they don't know how to be normal people, they are not normal in any kind of relationship. There are only two sides, the ones that lower themselves and the ones that rule... for society it's just status. I have never seen even a Japanese who is not materialistic. This itself shows that human beings acts like liquid inside their container called as society, thereby taking the shape of their respective societal containers. Japanese workers are diligently following a particular system because they are expected to act in such a manner by their society they live in, which itself follows such codified socio-customary mores, trends, religious or political systems. Why do Islamists blow themselves up = codes Why do Hindus do what they do = codes Why do Sikhs do what they do = codes Why do Christians do what they do = codes Why do Communists, Socialists, Capitalists, Nazis, Ku Klux Klan and people from Timbaktoo do what they do = It's the codes. The leave thing is really true. Most businesses in Japan have things set up in a way that the entire team is always busy and worked to 110% capacity. There is never any room for flexibility and deadlines are usually always tight. If one person has to take leave then the entire team has to overwork and you can be resented by colleagues for increasing their workload. This is why it's almost considered rude for staff on vacation to to bring back gifts for their co-workers when they return. We had a Japanese co-worker that moved here for work, and they were shocked when we added in extra time when planning out our deadlines for people unexpectedly having to take leave or falling sick.

The rank and file are the easiest sacrifices for businesses to beat inflation aside from corporate corruption instigated by crafty managers, for example if you have a hundred or more employees, instead of spending for three shifts the manager decided to make do out of two shifts in a round the clock operation, a lot of money will be saved without the owner noticing it because the managers have hideous bookkeeping skills, its becoming a trend worldwide, so humanity has two problems, first, the monetary system is very obsolete, we are using money the way romans did, only the technology of producing it has improved, but the practice is awfully the same, second, people do not pass a law regarding asset limitations where nations allow individuals to acquire liquidated assets worth more than the lifetimes of them and their heirs which creates an extremely imbalanced circulation of obsolete money system, not to mention the money itself is phased out already but humanity is still using it BECAUSE CENTRAL BANKS ARE TOOLS OF DOMINATION, if you allow a central bank to operate in your country to print your money from especially a private central bank (well nothing is state owned in the beginning really) the owners of that central bank also owns your country ESSENTIALLY, central banks should be people owned, private central banks is a form of economic non military colonisation, who told you colonisation ended after world war two?? Nobody smart enough would believe that LIE, colonisation only changed its methods from military to economic, but IT IS STILL colonisation, problem is, the united nations is not united enough to tackle these important issues hounding humanity since the time of the BABEL TOWER

The company takes care of its employees and makes sure the work life balance is equally taken care of. This goes back decades. If you are the first person home at night, the neighbors think you lost your job, are a failure in life and business. If you are the last one home at night, like 1130pm, the neighbors hear you drive up and think you must be very successful and important. This is partly why when men got off of work early they met in bars to eat up the evening so that neighbors would think they were working.

Most companies/bosses value employees based on 2 things: - How much time they see you in the office (which means leaving late, and not taking vacation days) - How many nomikai (drinking party) you attend to Do these 2 things and you will climb the corporate ladder. I was in Japan in December October 2001. I visited Shibuya. It is extremely busy. It is a futuristic part of Tokyo. Through the office block windows, I saw how people worked late. Workers tend to overdrink during weekends. But Japanese are very hard working.

I work for a traditional Japanese MNC. The work culture in Japan has changed drastically in the last 2, decades. The slogging culture is coming to an end and people are encouraged to take leaves. Just few days back I was comparing holiday calenders of all major business hubs around the world and guess what, Japan has the highest number of public holidays(shocking?). Yes! more than India.

The amazing thing is how perpetual the system is. Every manager alive today had to put up with this as a junior worker and yet they inflict this on their workers in turn just because that's how it's always done. Its as if only cruel sadistic personality types are filtered for promotions.

It’s true that Japan has such toxic over worked culture, however women are treated really badly in workplace and harassed by male counterparts. Men do take vacations but usually outside of Japan cause it’s cheaper than traveling inside their own country. I was in Philippines in early 80’s and saw many Japanese men in groups visiting Manila , and you know for what reason! I really hope younger generations change things for better. I was a university student in 90’s and working in a retail store in Canada, Japanese motivational speech and get together in the morning was appreciated by us in the west . At that time Japan had a very strong economy that was envy of the westerners. Anyways, our area supervisor of that retail store wanted us all get together in the morning and jump for joy and motivate each other for good sales of the day ;)) I looked at them and said but I’m not Japanese and this is silly. The rest of the young people got behind me and told them off. We sold Italian handbags and suitcases, very expensive leather goods. Funny how things change over the years.
