A big Transhipment hub on the Indian Mainland will be only able to cater to domestic demands(due to the geographic location far from the busiest international shipping routes and trade networks). Yes, Colombo port is deeper than any of India's biggest ports. So major ships dock there and transport cargo to Indian ports. But now new ports are constructed to accommodate larger carriers.
