They took back Crimea, which was always Russia because 95% of population demand it. Also they stopped possible invasion on Russia by that. Now they have their troops on border with Lugansk and Donbass for 7 years, from time of Nazi takeover of Ukraine (in USA organization) in order to prevent attack of Ukraine and NATO on Russia, and genocide of Russians in Lugansk and Donbass area. Very simple, Russians did all what needed to prevent war, and it is disable NATO's possibilities for attack.

If anything had to happen it would have by now, but I believe the primary objective of this Russian build up is to demonstrate how divided, spineless and ineffective NATO is. Apart from economic sanctions which we don't really know the dollar implications for Russia and opportunity to sell some weapons to Ukraine, NATO can't really protect shit.
