I'm no military guy, but it seems to me that China has the easiest job of flying close to Taiwan when ever they feel the need. Compared to the US and the need to get it's navy all that distance (how long can it hang about anyway?), and Taiwan which is probably constantly on high alert, then respond by intercepting (both actions exhausting & costly).

The US can loiter a carrier group indefinitely. Also, we have air bases in Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, South Korea, Guam, the Middle East, and if needed, we can send air power from anywhere else as well. Add to that the submarine force. China is out gunned and they know it. Want proof? Taiwan is still independent.

We all want to make fun poking at Chinese military strength. We can laugh now, however that laughter may change in the future. The way that we view China today is the same way we viewed Japan before December 7th 1941. Despite what people may think it does not take much to sit off a military conflict of global proportion. It only took one Serbian student with a pistol to assassinate an Austrian Hungarian political figure. The result was world war I. The point if anybody decides to spend time thinking about it is like in world war I scenario China has allies today. those allies are pretty obviously North Korea and Russia. That does not include isis who would love to see America start something and then botch it. Given the right place and time with the proper ingredients we could see a war nobody wants.
