If the shopkeeper has a key, you can still steal from him. You have enough time if you pick up the key, set it down immediately (DON'T THROW), then pick up the gun and shoot. All before the shopkeeper wakes back up.

The minus signalises that the potential is always attractive, since G, M and r are always greater than zero. Hey NL, when ploting to murder the shopkeeper try to hide things you dont want to explode in the areas above or below the main shop room (you know, those one with ladders and locked doors). It doesn't count as stealing and you keep those precious bombs and jetpaks safe from bullets. It does not solve the key issue tho :

Minor Spelunky 2 Spoilers... There is a benefit to being cursed in the dwellings. Being cursed allows you to see Ghists. (yes Ghist with an i; they are usually found in those seemingly random caveman graves you come across when a secret doorway is exposed) This also allows you to find a secret shop. This secret shop in the Quillback Arena that is only accessed by being cursed that sells really good items. The entrance is behind the ground in the central area between the two corridors exits, the door kinda looks like a big curse pot (or a Shy Guy mask, IMO). If your cursed you can enter and meet the Ghist Shopkeeper who sells 3 $20,000 presents that can have stuff like packs, guns, supply bags with 4 bombs and ropes, and even a kapala! It is kinda easy to steal from this guy because he is kinda slow and doesn't follow you to the next floor, or can be killed by the camera. I think it is a sort of super bonus for doing the run on 'Hard mode'. But it takes a lot of work to get Quillback to open it up if you don't have the bombs to spare. Making a hole in the center to drill him straight to the bottom area near the corridor exits is usually the fastest way to go. It is a lot of work and in most cases not worth the risk or time to get it, but if the stars and planets align and and the RNG God of the caves, Derek Yu, smiles upon ye. The Ghist shop can be a HUGE boon. You can remove the curse later via Kali or the elixir reward from the temple Star challenge, or dying with the Ankh. Also, if you want to curse yourself in the dwellings you can do it by having a horned lizard roll into you while you hold the curse pot like NL did here, but if don't want to risk killing yourself with a horned lizard combo-ing you can also put the pot on a 2-high stack of bone pile tiles and from the bottom break and walk underneath it to have the pot fall on your head you can do it that way. The other way to cure curse is either by Ankh resurrection, or by doing the star challenge when in the temple area - you give a different special item instead of the clone gun if you do it in the temple

NL a tip I read on reddit for Black Market that makes all items free without angering shopkeepers. Get Yang to aggro you in the BM and get him to shoot his arrow at a pack/bomb box etc next to a shop keeper so they die and then all items are free

Hey if you want to kill the shopkeeper put all the items at the back of the shop, and have the shopkeeper follow you as close as possible, then whip him while jumping so he runs after you and you bounce on his head, grab the shotty and blast em. Works every time, much easier than it sounds.

If you're going to make the conscious decision to not murder, then you need to spend more time making sure you get at least the high dollar loot. In the 2-X levels, idols are worth 10k and diamonds are ~6250. If you had gotten the dark level idol and ghost pot, that alone would have been more than enough for the bomb box, maybe even the paste.
