Hey Jason, this setup looks awesome. I believe you'd get a better venturi effect by adapting up at the beginning to funnel MORE water in. This will force more flow into the smaller pipe creating higher pressure in the line. That will in turn create a greater vacuum on your suction pipe. If you put a restrictor on the suction hose end like say a hose barb or something, that should also increase the vacuum pressure. You may have to adapt up also at the end going into your sluice to drop the pressure again so it doesn't wash out your sluice.

IMO, as a journeyman pipefitter, you need to remove the restricted Y and allow as much suction to be created as possible by the venturi effect. Replace that Y with a sanitary Y and have it reduced with a bushing for your suction line.

You can gravity dredge with just pipe and hose. No need for the Venturi. Here are the basic principles. The discharge end of your pipe must always be lower than the intake end of your hose. Keep your pipe and hose as straight as possible. No dips and no bends or material will begin to clog up. All connections in your pipe must be air tight. Any leakage will drastically reduce suction. Gorilla tape is great for sealing connections and works even when wet. You need a quick connect system to hook your hose to your pipe. If you use pipe that has a male and a female end,you can cut a small piece off the male end of the pipe and Gorilla tape it to your hose. Start by setting your pipe up first. You want at least two feet of vertical drop between the intake end and the discharge end of the pipe. Place the intake end at least three inches under water. Pin the intake end in place with heavy rocks. When your pipe is set up properly and is producing adequate suction, fill the hose with water and then quick connect to the pipe under water. Your pipe is set up with a female end upstream. To quick connect just plug the male hose end into the female end of the pipe. When this connection is made, seal it underwater with Gorilla tape. Resist the temptation to jam the quick connect connection too tightly. You will need to get it unstuck when you are done. When you are running do not overload the system with material. The art of gravity dredging is in a proper balance of material and water. When properly set up your your gravity dredge will provide suction comparable to that provided by a motorized dredge. Remember, if the intake end of the hose is lower than the discharge end of the pipe your suction stops. Looks like you don’t have much drop in that location. If you want to work that spot you will probably need longer pipe. Aloha

Thought on the intake end of pipe.. 8 to 10 inch pieces of 3, 4, and 6 inch pipe adapted to the 2 inch pipe to force more water in should help increase pressure in theory
@timothymacmaster7432
@timothymacmaster7432 5 ай бұрын
@@grumpypupscratchnskills5385 Main problem he was having in that location was not enough vertical drop. You really need at least two feet of vertical drop. Another useful general principle is to use the least amount of pipe sections you can after sufficient vertical drop is achieved. Four inch pipe with two feet of vertical drop will generate enough suction to tear tendons in your wrist
@user-mj9lz7ze1m
@user-mj9lz7ze1m 5 ай бұрын
@@grumpypupscratchnskills5385 Other way around. The large pipe needs to be at the down stream end. You need to create high pressure at the top with low pressure at the bottom. You cannot create additional pressure by creating additional flow larger pipe into smaller pipe. It actually works in reverse. The reduction actually creates back pressure, which slows the flow and reduces the pressure.

Jason, just hook your dredging hose to the top of the pipe. You just have to pay attention to the sand/water ratio so it doesn't plug. To use that setup with a suction nozzle, you'd need 50-100 psi, and you just don't have enough slope for that, unless you want to lay out about 1/2 mile of pipe...LOL. Good episode in any case.

I'm thinking, instead of a restrictor at the top, put a bigger pipe and funnel it into the tube. The more water you can converge into your 2 inch pipe, the faster the water moves through the pipe, creating a stronger venturi effect at the Y point.

Rule of thumb is normally 3to1. Whatever hose you are using to do the dredging (I would recommend a shorter garden hose) which is roughly 1inch ID, I would do the pressure pipes 3 times wider ID, 3 or 4 inch. Also at the end of the dredging hose put a screw directly in the center of the hose to stop it from sucking larger rocks in.

You can increase you suction by reducing your pipe size at the Y . This is how we draft water at a natural source E.G. rivers and streams on the fire engines. Also you can use a small piece of 3” at the feed end (starting point) and it will catch more water and in turn create more flow pressure as it travels down your pipe. Remember the faster the the flow of water at the Venturi effect the stronger the suction.

Jason, all you have to do is set up a long pipe through the creek to your your sluice box as you did in this video and at the very top of your pipe upstream connect your flex hose for suction. As the water goes down through the pipe, your best suction will be at the top of your pipe, and it will carry all your material to your sluice box. Just don’t take the section flex pipe out of the water very long because your section depends on the amount of water going down your pipe.

28 years ago For a project for school I rebuilt this old pump it was called the Mud Hog made by a company called Marlow built in 60’s , it basically had a piston that drove a rubber flange ( half wheel barrow tire ) which was called a bellow pump I believe it was , and it just had two flaps that worked like a check valve , but that thing would suck up 3/4 stones and literally sand or any sludge , I’ve always wondered why nobody converted one of those into a “dredge” That thing was perfect for pumping sands mixed with water etc , and it would push that sludge 100’ up hill .wish I still had it. It was a 5hp 4cycle I believe .

I've made a couple different types of dredges and from what I've found is you start out with like 6" pipe 3 to 4 feet long then down to a 4" 3 or 4 foot long then go down to your 2" that will create more pressure and faster flow past your Y and in turn should create a lot more suction. But you might have to put a crash box and your sluce to keep from blasting the material off your mats. Hope that helps.

The idea of the 4" pipe constricted to a 2" should help bunches. But if you can add a flare or cone to the 4" entrance, you should be able to force even more water than before, might have to figure out how to slow down the volume, it might be like a fire-hose! Probably won't need to lug 100ft of pipe either.

You don't need a venturi, all you need is pipe, hose (or along enough hose if no pipe), then you need enough drop in the river without the drop it wont work well. The river doesn't really seem to have enough drop from what i've seen so far. You need a drop of about at least 3-4 feet i'd say, and also put the suction hose on the inlet.

I enjoyed watching the trial and error method to see what works. I would suggest you do it a little different to get the full venturi effect. Instead of putting the wye pipe at the head of your intake I would put 3 sections of pipe(stick with the 2 inch), then downsize just before your wye to 1 inch, you would need some sort of adapter the fits inside the top end of the 2 inch wye and squeezes the water down to 1 inch to create some velocity and suction in the wye, then 1 section of 2 inch pipe down to your sluice. Run a 2 inch suction hose off of your wye to where you want to work. Make sure you have the proper hose and connections off the wye for your suction hose because tape isn't going to work. You need it to be airtight to get good suction at the end of your suction hose. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing you try again.

Go big to little. Make a dam to get water built up, (funnel to increase water access maybe like sluice flare if the mood strikes you) then downstream. (a barley pop from mother natures fridge) Downstream, put in the reducer to increase water pressure (your venturi), and then the Y joint for your sucker. If you have 2" of water coming in, then go down to 1", the cross-section area difference is about 4x, so 2x 1" would still get you 2x the water value of the 2". That should suck. I think. Another thing I see a lot of is that with those flares at top of the sluice (making the V everyone is told they want), the material all tends towards the center rather than being worked over the whole mat, so peeps only get about 3" of working mat in a 10" box. If it's all packin the cetner, that might be where your flakes are jumping ship.

I think if you had the y and dredge line in the middle of the run, if you increased the diameter to 3" after and maintained a siphon, you would be in business. Might have to put a 90 on the end of the 3" or keep it submerged so it doesn't drain and get air in it. Need to keep a siphon on it.

Every restriction, or downsizing of the pipe would increase the velocity of the water, I suggest at least 2 reductions in size. Start big. You would then pull your "wye" or suction end off the bottom third section of pipe of faster water thats increased in velocity. There your venturi/vacuum effect will be highest. You'll have to be careful with the rocks you suck in, as the reductions in size will obviously cause some plugs unless you have a cage on the suction end, I suggest a couple deck screws through your sucking end to prevent this.

You need a vacuum reservoir a sealed 5 gallon pail with the 2” going in on the top with some sort of air bleeder to get the air out from the top and a short maybe a couple ft of 4” the bottom on the output just before the slucebox , the faster you can get the water to drop from the bucket the more suction you will have

It's just an idea to possibly increase the suction on the gravity system i was thinking. Maybe something like a box built into the line with an impeller/turbine that would spin and increase the draw into the suction/nozzle end. Also, to keep it from plugging up, i was also thinking since it's mainly flour gold, putting a screen or hardware mesh on the nozzle to classify the material and keep the larger rocks and debris from jamming up your system.

The Biggest Challenge with the Water Pipe can be seen when you lift the Discharge End out of the Water and show the Flow. The Flow is too Smooth. The Problem is that you have Laminar (Smooth and Calm) Flow in the pIpe and this causes a lot of Resistance to the flow. If you look at Appliance Discharge Hoses you will see that they are almost always corrugated. This produces Non-Laminar Flow (Bubbly and Fast). You need to change the Flow in the Pipe to Non-Laminar Flow in order to Really Increase the Water Velocity. That's how the Stream Works. The Stream Bed has Obstructions, the Pipe does not. So you are actually slowing the Stream Water down in the Pipe. [This is CounterIntuitive] The only Suction you are feeling is due to the Water Height Drop (Head Height) and not due to a Flow Differentiation or Venturi Effect.

I don't know. I think I'd find some private property that the creek went through and talk to the owners. Maybe give them a piece of the action. Then I'd get me a 4-6" real dredge and go to town. Like in the old days when they actually leased the land to mine. Or extend my pipe further up. The higher you go up the creek, the more you increase the head pressure. Maybe some rolled up 2 inch hose about 100 feet long.😊

I'm no expert, but look at your sluice. It has the flair at the top to channel more water over the riffles. Instead of a reducer at the top of your pipe I would try using a 4 inch to 2 inch coupler to channel more water into the pipe to increase flow and pressure in the lower end.

The 4” black corrugated hose would work great, neck it down to your 2 inch flexible mining hose for working, put a 4x2 wye at top ……keep the 4” wye underwater -hose doesn’t have to be perfectly flat, the greatest elevation change is the key (not the length)….squeeze off flow going into 4x2 wye to get greater suction from your 2” mining line….the 4” corrugated will travel much lighter than what I just witnessed

It will also create a significant amount of drag, slowing the water down, reducing the suction. At the same time, the corregation would act like a sluice, catching the gold in the middle of the pipe instead of transporting it to the sluice. Imagine trying to clean gold dust out of a drip ripple twenty feet down a 4 inch pipe. Couldn't be done.

@@user-mj9lz7ze1m your correct, the flexible Home Depot stuff is corrugated on inside also, but the rigid double wall like for drain tile is not, it is smooth inside and very light, probably less than half the weight of schedule 40 or less even….I was mainly thinking about the weight of lugging it…the fluid dynamics of what I described should provide a considerable upgrade for suction dredging

I think you don't need a Y. Once the white pipe is full of water, connect the flex pipe ( also full of water ) then raise the connection point up on a rock. I also think you don't need all that white pipe, just twice the length of the flex pipe. You can experiment with the height of the connection. Also make sure the connection is as airtight as possible.

I just did some research and now know exactly what you need to do. You need to install a reducing coupling at the end of the 2" pipe where you want your suction tube to be. So install a 2" X 1 1/4" reducing coupling and then a 1 1/4" nipple between that coupling and a 1 1/4" Tee or Y so that the suction line is coming out the top. Put another 1 1/4" nipple in the end and then a 1 1/4" X 2" reducing coupling between your suction fitting and the downstream pipe. I believe that using reducing couplings will be far more effective than simply using bushings because the couplings will have less disruptive impact on the free flow of the water. If you don't generate enough suction, you will probably need to downsize the diameter of your dredge suction line to a thin wall clear 1" plastic tubing or something similar.
@timbos8392
@timbos8392 5 ай бұрын
Btw, considering fluid dynamics, as well as the importance of the speed of the water in the 1 1'4" Y or Tee in generating suction, I would keep the 1 1/4" nipples as short as possible at each end of your suction fitting. The longer they are, I suspect the speed of the water will slow down from friction and turbulence- so make those nipples 3" long. The collar on each end of the suction fitting will be 1 1/4" deep, as well as on the 1 1/4" end of the reducing couplings.

The velocity of the water in the pipe is where the low pressure will be generated for suction. Laying a pipe down the center of the creek does very little. The water in the pipe is basically flowing at the same rate as the stream. You need the water in the pipe to go faster. The only way I can see you can do that is to have more head pressure. A much larger section of pipe at the top, like a 3ft section that is about 10in in diameter or larger. Or you need to create steep drop at the end to generate a higher rate of flow. You can also try moving your black suction pipe into the Y pipe about 10 inches. this will place the suction pipe down into the main pipe and it will "pull" water from the black pipe. A more proper venturi setup than just the Y. A screen on your suction pipe will help it all run smoothly. Or maybe reduce the Y connector to a small 1inch connector and create a real spot of constriction that will make the velocity of the water at the venturi speed up and create more suction.
