I like this episode for the simple fact that it gives someone else for Dipper to relate to and get along with. I mean he had Soos, Stan, and Mabel the whole summer but having someone just like him who shares the same interest is nice to see. Also weird al is here so that is awesome

The episode is not so much "filler" as a necessary character-establishing moment for Ford, to show how he integrates into the family (or _doesn't_ ), now that he's here. It also emphasised his extreme trust issues, which were already apparent in the journal entries, and manifest in wanting to keep everything hidden and _away_ from the rest of the family. As soon as he takes Dipper into his trust, he immediately tells him not to tell _anybody_ about _anything_ - which is not a very healthy way to handle things.

The bit at the end about the DuckTective having a twin brother and everyone being unimpressed is also meta commentary; the fans of Gravity Falls actually put together that Stanley likely had a twin brother over a year before Not What He Seems even aired lol. They were THAT good at piecing together the subtle clues. That's what led to series creator Alex Hirsch deciding to create a fake leak in order to throw them off track. So not only was the kid's show joke in the beginning self referential, so was that last one haha.

I like this episode. It might not be as lore heavy as the last two, but it gives us a nice introduction to Ford and some insight on his character. It's additionally nice to see how he gets along with Dipper. I also like Ford's protective body language during the entire fight of DD&MD, always making sure to place himself between the danger and Dipper or holding out an arm. 1:59 Remember when Dipper asked who writes sentences like "When fighting a Gremloblin use water... only as a last resort as water makes him much, much scarier!"? The answer is: This dork. And he's in better shape than Stan because he's been running around the multiverse for the last 30 years. Considering he also has a gun on his person seemingly at all times and made "many powerful enemies" we can assume quite a bit of said time was spent fighting. Endcard cipher: Fun and games are great distractions, but small things can have chain reactions.

With the lab being separated from the giftshop by an elevator, stairs and the vending machine, some fans theorised that Ford fighting the cyclotopus might have been partially staged (maybe due to wanting an excuse to interact with his family after Stan told him to stay away) In Not What He Seems, Alex described Stan's escape as him acting like Ford so seeing Ford immediately react to Probabilitor with threats and a gun really makes ya go "yup these two are twins"

18:42 Of course it's bad. Ford told Dipper it was bad. I'd be more worried if he kept smiling at the rift after Dipper left. The only filler episodes are those anthology episodes. Gravity Falls has always been about showing crazy stuff happening in the town while slowly building up the main plot. Even episodes where not a lot happens have had some kind of payoff later. You could call the Mermando episode filler but it was another moment Bill used to trick Dipper in the puppet episode. This episode isn't filler because it establishes the character dynamics after Ford's return and introduces the dimensional rift.
@MikeyVenture2 жыл бұрын
All very great points
@JessAnderson19882 жыл бұрын
Agreed! It drives me nuts when people label character building episodes as "filler". People love to throw that word around nowadays while watching shows, and it doesn't mean what they think it means. Besides, you can't really know if an episode is "filler" if you haven't seen the whole show anyways.
@gryphonvert2 жыл бұрын
Weirdly enough -- and of course, leaving out The Big Episodes -- this is probably my favorite ep of GF. I liked the person in the chat who said that it's better to regard an ep like this (at this point in S2) as a "breather" rather than "filler". Plus, as I've argued: there's no "filler" in Gravity Falls. This ep was definitely for bringing in a more light-hearted mood after the last 2 heavy eps, but also, it did a ton of character work, and that's important too. One of the things Alex Hirsch has said (in the dvd commentaries, I think), is that the mysteries of GF are things that happen, and they're interesting, but they aren't what the show is *about*, in his estimation. What the show is about is the journey of the characters. The mysteries and plot is there to show their journey. So when you get episodes that do more with character development, but are lighter on driving the overall plot, you have to recognize that as equally valuable in getting us to the ending that Alex and the rest of the crew wanted us to get to. (No spoilers, I promise! Just like... way more analysis than anyone has time for.) So, think about all the stuff this episode actually accomplished! Last episode was really Ford's introduction, and major backstory for Stan and him, but it's also heavy, and tragic, and it ended on kind of a heavy note (both for Stan and Ford, and for Mabel and Dipper). In this episode, in a pretty short time, they do a lot of work in filling out Ford's character in a bunch of different directions: he's kind of an adventurer and a daredevil (look at him going after the cycloptopus, or admitting he stole that infinity die); he's definitely a gigantic nerd, and despite his "serious", stern demeanor, he can have fun and be silly too (Princess Unattainabelle). He likes the kids -- that was shown the moment he arrived, last episode (and he does greet Mabel first and say that he likes that she's weird) -- but his deal at the start of this ep, where he proclaims that Dipper can't come share the "dark, weird road (he) travels", should be seen in context of Stan telling him to stay away from the kids. (Which, let's face it, Ford is already pushing, by coming upstairs in pursuit of the cycloptopus; more on that in a bit!) There's also that moment during the argument in the living room, where Stan and Ford are getting heated (in a very sibling-like way), and Ford stops, and basically invites Stan to join them in the game, because he "might have fun". Now, *we* know (and Ford probably knows) that Stan is very unlikely to join the game. But it's interesting, isn't it, that just ONE episode after his arrival (and it's supposed to be very soon after in-show), Ford has un-bent towards Stan enough to invite Stan to play a game and have fun? Even though it doesn't work, that's an interesting gesture from Ford. There's also, as Mikey noticed, the problem of Dipper feeling like Stan and Mabel make fun of him a lot; and honestly, they do, and always have, whereas Dipper largely doesn't make fun of Mabel's interests nearly as much. (If you think back over various S1 eps, there's a lot of examples of Mabel, sometimes with Stan, making fun of Dipper -- about his lack of manliness, about him being short, about him having a crush on Wendy, about him being nerdy. It's a running theme.) Yes, Mabel is concerned about him spending so much time with Ford, worried about losing her brother, but she (and the audience) should definitely think about the point being made there that what is driving Dipper towards Ford is partly shared interest, and partly Dipper feeling picked-on by the others. (Which Mabel does acknowledge in that final line, "You got me.") And then of course, there's that ending -- where Stan, for once (!), genuinely apologizes to Dipper for making fun of him, and giving his blessing to Dipper hanging out with Ford. That shows Stan un-bending a bit, himself. We got whole *seconds* of Stan and Ford standing next to each other, smiling! (And don't discount the fact that Ford witnessed Stan giving Dipper an apology; something that Stan has been very bad at, in the past -- remembering that Stan has never actually apologized to Ford for whatever role he had in breaking Ford's science-fair project. If you rewatch that bit, there is a very interesting shift of Ford's expression right when Stan starts his apology, and it's a hard expression to put a name to, but I've eventually come to think of it as "apprehensive for what Stan will say about Ford hanging out with Dipper when Stan told him to stay away", and surprise when Stan apologizes instead.) And of course, the very end -- the mystery / plot comes back in, and gains a new and very important complication, the Rift. But there's another very key complication there -- Ford telling Dipper, but asking Dipper not to tell anyone else, not even Stan, not even *Mabel*. This pretty clearly comes from Ford's "Trust No One" paranoia, and it's not really a good idea. But it's a complication to keep in mind, going forward. * I mentioned Ford kind of already pushing back at Stan's demand that he stay away from the kids, by busting into the gift shop pursuing the cycloptopus. There is a fan theory -- no more than that, but one I enjoy -- that Ford basically set that up, as a way to look good in front of the family. It's an idea that I find awkward and endearing, if that's supposed to be the implication (but as I said, we don't know for sure; only that, logistically, it doesn't make that much sense for the cycloptopus to have gotten out of the basement otherwise, and clearly Ford was lying about -- or being overly-dramatic about -- "don't let it taste human flesh!", since he's largely unconcerned later when it latches onto his head.) So why do I say all of this character work is so important? Well, not only does it give Ford several new dimensions in character, but it also shows, in a few small ways, that the trouble between Ford and Stan is... maybe less unsolvable than the ending of the last episode implied? The ending of ATOTS was pretty dire, between "You're really not gonna thank me" and "(After this summer is over) You give me my house back, you give me my name back, and this Mystery Shack junk is over for good". But what we see in this very next ep is both Ford and Stan kind of... forgetting to be quite as mad at each other as they seemed to be earlier. And that's a hopeful thing. Obviously, not going to say any more about where that might go! Just saying what this episode shows. I'll admit up front -- I'm a big Ford fan. He's a character with flaws, no question; but that's on purpose. Every one of the Pines has flaws. I also do think people have to remember that he and Stan *are* siblings, and twins. Like, as Mikey commented earlier, there were things Ford did over the course of his life (shown in the previous ep's flashbacks) that were pretty irresponsible. And as some said in the chat: love Ford, but he's also a jerk. Well, he's Stan's brother, isn't he? Stan has been shown throughout the series to be irresponsible at various times, and Stan is absolutely a big jerk! It would have been really boring, and not involved nearly as much interesting conflict (for storytelling), if Ford didn't have those flaws, and there's something really fun about noticing the similarities between him and Stan, even past the obvious differences. Kind of like Dipper and Mabel. Last thing I'll say in this already over-long comment -- Ford is only in this series for a relatively few eps, (the latter half of S2, 9 eps in total). The show wanted him to be more than just a plot device, and they had a very compressed amount of time to give him as much character development as they could. We had 31 eps to get to know all of the facets of the other characters. So that's what I see an episode like this doing, and for just 21 minutes or whatever, as I laid out above, I think it actually accomplished a lot. Which is one of the reasons I love it so much.
@amitavrashmi172 жыл бұрын
Hey I don't mind the length I do it sometimes myself And I feel the same way about this episode also worth mentioning the parallels between both set of twins like you said Stan and Ford are a lot a like and Mabel one of the major things that make her concern is seeing this parallel she sees how much she and Stan are a like and same way for dipper and Ford and afraid they will be the same
@gryphonvert2 жыл бұрын
@@amitavrashmi17 Yeah! (ha ha thank you for reading all that.) I agree, one of the things I love about (now) having 2 sets of twins is the way there are both similarities and differences between them. It rewards a lot of analysis! Stan and Ford, and Dipper and Mabel, have very *obvious* differences, so what becomes really interesting is the ways in which they are unexpectedly similar. What's also fun is -- as this ep establishes, there are similarities and affinities between the Nerdy Twins (Dipper and Ford), and the Fun Twins (Mabel and Stan) -- but as the eps go on and we get more details to work with, it becomes possible to see the similarities between Dipper and Stan, and Ford and Mabel. (The show itself has explicitly highlighted the Dipper-Stan similarities -- Stan seeing his young self in Dipper and wanting to toughen Dipper up; Stan saying that Dipper's obsession will get them in trouble and that Dipper is stubborn, "kind of like me".) It's also been said that there are ways in which Stan sees Ford in Dipper, and Ford might see echoes of Stan in Mabel. I love being able to draw all of those connections between them!

This is probably one of if not my very favorite non-plot-heavy episode. Not only is the comedy totally on point, I just love how much it humanizes Ford; he just showed up and he already feels like an actual part of the family thanks to his bonding with Dipper here. This nerdy old man has practically been Dipper’s idol all summer and now they get to be an uncle and nephew rather than author and fan. It’s beautiful 😊 And I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: Never let it be said that _Gravity Falls_ doesn’t know its audience. If anything they know us a little too well. Also I love the gag during the _Duck-tective_ finale when Mabel unthinkingly pours her entire Pringles can onto Stan’s lap and Stan notices but just. Lets it happen. Stan’s the best and I love him. ❤️

Just my opinion, but I don't think Mable was worried about Dipper spending more time with Ford. I think it was more like Dipper used many difficult words to explain the game ( which he claims not fully knowing most of those words himself). The moment Dipper explains the game in simple terms Mable and Stan excel at it. Also, Stanly not wanted to play because Of him still being mad at Stanford. Even at the end... Stanly apologies to Dipper only and when they are watching TV, Ford is not with them. Showing that Stan-set still has termeoil. I also don't like how Dipper felt like he needed to apologies to Ford for ♾️ dice even though it's Ford who is carrying it EVERYWHERE.

In my opinion these are no real filler episodes. In Anime filler are episodes with stories which do not exist at all in the manga. Just produced because they have to wait for the manga to progress or could not finish the main episode or to promote a movie or something. Gravity Falls was created the way it is and because of that I would not call them filler episodes. They are part of the total. I think the show would not be as great if everything would be just around the main plot and progress quickly every week. For me the developments and clues in every episode are part of the overall experience.

My thoughts: CIPHER UPDATE: The key word, “RADMASTER” can be seen on the paper behind Dipper, but only after when Ford rolls a 32. The end credits cipher decodes to, “EXCELSI-WHATEVER!” and the cipher on the end picture decodes to, “FUN AND GAMES ARE GREAT DISTRACTIONS BUT SMALL THINGS CAN HAVE CHAIN REACTIONS.”. In my mind, this is probably the episode where Grunkle Stan is the most hated. Mostly because of the fact that he forces Dipper and Ford to stay away from each other, but also because he always makes fun of Dipper because he’s a nerd. Although, I’m nothing but god damn relieved that at the end he finally lets Dipper have what he really wants. I think why I get relieved by that is because I strongly believe that Dipper needs to spend more time with people who are exactly like him. What I mean by that is Dipper needs more people in his life who don’t ever make fun of him and have the exact same interests as him. I can truly compare myself to Dipper in this episode because I’m also a nerd. I mean, I’m not a nerd like the characters from Stranger Things, but I do know that whenever I watch Gravity Falls, I know that I’m a nerd. You’re a nerd if you have a big obsession over something. I also think of myself as Dipper in this episode because he always feels like no one appreciates him and his ideas and no one else enjoys the stuff that he loves. I feel that way all the time, especially towards my family. None of them admire Gravity Falls as much as I do and they never watch it with me anymore. My sister has watched the whole series with me before, but she, as I say, “grew up” and had stopped caring for it, which is ridiculous. My mom says she has watched it, but I don’t believe she has seen any of season 2. My dad has never seen it before, but I really wish he would because I think of Gravity Falls as the both modern and animated version of Stranger Things and that was a show that he enjoyed. Anyway, this was once again a great reaction! Sorry I didn’t post this comment earlier. For the past week I’ve been stuck in a place with zero Wi-Fi. Kind Regards!

This episode isnt really filler at all, dont forget that ford was the one who in his jurnal "in gravity fall, dont trust anyone"( its in episode 1!!, not a spoiler) without giving the time to show how he slowly start to trust dipper it would be a huge hole i think Also this is one of my favorite its so fun

Stan told ford that dipper and Mabel are "shermies grandkids" I'm guessing that shermie is the baby Stan and ford's mom was holding and them being dipper and Mabels great uncle's it makes sense for them to be their grandma's brother's

I love the play on DnD in this episode along with the extra character growth and the fun in just bringing a game to life. Great episode and I love that you laugh at all the funny parts you actually get the jokes which makes you fun to watch. It’s still January 4th. 28/?

Actually we don’t know if the baby we saw in the previous episode is shermie pines. My personal theory, though, is that shermie Pines was not home possibly serving in the military, and the grandparents were taking care of his child, so the child could very well be dipper and Mabel’s mother or father, but that is just what I think. There are a lot of theories about who, or what shermie Pines actually is for all we know shermie could be short for a girl or boy. For a boy, it could be short for Sherman and a girl Shannon or Sherry. I can’t think of to many names that would actually be a version of Sherman that is female. Glad you enjoyed the series so far, looking forward to your future reactions

funny that you're not fine with them taking over the livingroom for their game but was fine with mabel taking over the room they shared for her noisy slumber parties that tended to try to interact with dipper

I think the baby from last episode is Shermie, The grandpa
@sarmadhabibkhan30362 жыл бұрын
Okay so the child from Stan and Ford's flashback (their sibling) is Dipper and Mabel's mom. Gruncle means great uncle, not Grandpa. Ford and Stan are Dipper and Mabel's great uncles.
@MikeyVenture2 жыл бұрын
I still think Shermie (sp?) is their grandparent though. If Shermie is their sibling, and Shermie has a kid, then they are Uncles to that child. Then Shermie's kid has Dipper and Mabel, which makes them great uncles, and Shermie their grandparent.
