Just seen and practiced a similar solution, but the stopper knot and hoop are on different ends of the rope, and you have more control of end ends by pulling separately until it latches.

@SmashCrunch Жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting knot. I would like to see your perspective on catching an object that is partially or fully submerged with a gravity knot. Also what advantage could you gain if you have two people on either side of a chasm trying to get a catch on the same object. Working with another person holding onto the same or joined rope, its very easy to accurately position a knot over top of an object. It would be interesting to see your work on an effective knot or rope structure that takes advantage of two people pulling from opposite sides. Even working solo I can position the rope over top an object much more accurately by working it from two sides of a chasm or valley.
@Nedw Жыл бұрын
I guess underwater you'll need to tie a monkey's fist with a weight inside instead of the first trefoil. Weighting the other side - the loop - should also be possible, but I have to think of which knot would be the most convenient for that. But you'll definitely need weights (stones, marbles).
@blingblangtrucknbrotherr Жыл бұрын
I bet if you could get a solid knot around a rock at whichever spot you are at (river stones for example) you could have that sit as the tag-end trefoil(?) knot. Or even add extra length to the tag and fasten the weight right up to the knot. As long as you can fit the weight through the toggle loop you should be good.

it demands a few adjustements depending on the size and shape of the target, and I didn't tested it otherwise that on very close targets, but that actually work for me below a minute of struggle. I wonder if it wouldn't be wise to but more weight on the knot holding the hook, to allow more manoeuvres from upper places?

Apparently, the story goes Ashley was trying to tie the oysterman knot and came up with this knot by accident
@Nedw Жыл бұрын
The story as I recall is that Ashley saw a knot at an oysterman's pike he thought was new, tried to knot it, and discovered afterwards the knot he saw was just an old, twisted and weathered simple knot and he has invented a completely different one. He was too humble to name it after himself so he gave it the name "oysterman's", but many afterwards give it Ashley's name as he was the actual inventor - and after all, that's the only knot bearing his name - all the others he collected from other tradesmen! He deserves a knot with his name!
