Some viewers think that this video is wrong or I am a flat Earther or that this could only be true if the Earth is expanding (see below). It's 100% consistent with textbook general relativity, and there's nothing inaccurate about the claim that Earth's surface is accelerating upwards. This is a highly counterintuitive aspect of physics' best theory of gravity.
The video is part of a series, a provocative introduction to GR. To dive in deeper, I suggest some other videos:
1. My more recent and more comprehensive GR explainer, "How Curved Spacetime Works": • How Curved Spacetime W...
2. An experiment you can do at home to confirm that you are indeed accelerating upwards: • Experimental Proof Tha...
3. A look at the differences between Newtonian gravity and general relativity: • Newton vs. Einstein: 5...
4. The video that started the series and won a physics prize, “How Gravity Makes Things Fall”: • How Gravity Makes Thin...
5. If none of that will convince you, maybe Derek Muller/Veritasium's highly similar video but much flashier (released a few months after mine), in which he says, "You are accelerating upwards!": • How Gravity Actually W...
#1 question asked by viewers: If the surface is accelerating "upward" in all directions around the globe, doesn't that mean the Earth is expanding?
Answer: No. Acceleration does not necessarily mean "speeding up" like how a car can speed up when you step on the gas. An analogy presented in this video is a rotating wheel: The points along its edge are constantly accelerating toward the center (centripetal acceleration, discussed at 4:21) - but the wheel is not shrinking or getting crushed. However, gravity has nothing to do with rotation. What actually happens in a place where there's gravity is that spacetime is curved, and you have to be accelerated just to stay in place. This will be clearer if you watch "How Curved Spacetime Works," • How Curved Spacetime W... .
Some physics cranks DO believe that gravity is explained intuitively by a constant expansion of the Earth. But the pseudoscience of "expansion gravity" cannot explain elliptical orbits, hyperbolic trajectories, and the relation between surface gravity, radius, and density. It’s also wildly in conflict with experiments and the accepted calculations of celestial bodies’ surface gravities. Just think of gravity as a kind of acceleration-in-place that appears as the more familiar (upward) speeding-up acceleration to observers that are free to move inertially.
While good-faith questions are welcome, I am not interested in platforming viewers' lay musings about how they think gravity really works. Such comments may be deleted, to avoid confusing viewers who come to this video with better-faith intentions. Science isn't done in KZbin comments; you are free to make your own video.
