I can never understand why people thumb down people who are helping others. Probably because it's not 4k or 1080p for them. There is always a minor complaint. The idea. This HELPS!

This series is so good! I completely missed this when I created my most recent vid and there’s a lot of similarities in the workflow. Really cool to see the similarities and differences in your process. I’m going to mention you in my next video.

This is fascinating; I'll definitely watch the rest of the series and your other videos. I've overlooked Gravity Sketch for a while in favour of other creative VR apps, but its capabilities are so unique. I think I'll be buying the base version soon. I hope it allows me to do most things and isn't too gimped in favour of the ridiculously priced subscriptions.
@JamesWRobbins5 жыл бұрын
the selling point for me is the edit ability of each piece of geometry. I've found in software like tilt brush and quill I don't have nearly the same amount of control over the curves and surfaces. From an industrial design perspective this is needed and Gravity Sketch was built for exactly this type of work. The base version should be fine unless you need to export the Nurbs data for future work. I've found for me I can get away with obj for 80% of my work flow.

Amazing work! Thanks for that. Two questions: 1. Did you use any of the subscription only pro features? 2. How many job offers did you get after uploading this series?

It is nice having more layers to work with when I have more complex scenes, Iges would be use full when working down stream in a studio but for personal use and with the Modo workflow I don't really need IGES export.. Some interest but no offers. To be honest I already have a job in the Auto industry..

How do you copy and paste an object? And do you thing the one time fee version is enough for some that just got into gravity sketch? Overall a very informative tutorial
@JamesWRobbins5 жыл бұрын
If you grab the object with the Grab sphere (grip button) and pull the trigger at the same time it will copy and paste. I wasn't aware of the free version? The base version for $30-$40 is perfectly usable for a lot of things.

@ 6:10 when you pull out the wheels they pull straight along an axis. How do you accomplish that. I am university student trying to teach my self this program. Your videos are really the only resource. Thank you for uploading!
@JamesWRobbins5 жыл бұрын
I use the smart move feature. Make sure it is enabled in settings. When you hover over a part you want to move with the red grip sphere it will highlight red. Now align your other controller and the axis widget will appear. Now you can grip and move the object along that axis

Thank you for showing your workflow. In your opinion what is the reason why I should go for a 3D modeling with gravity sketch? I mean, compared to modeling with Modo is it easier or more intuitive? Could you tell me if you are considering it just an alternative to the traditional 3d modeling or a better and easier approach to start creating 3d objects? Thank you.
@JamesWRobbins7 жыл бұрын
I am considering it to be a tool that can bridge the gap between 2D sketching and 3D modeling. Traditional 3D modeling in a tool like Alias or Modo can be time consuming when you are still in the early design phase. This tool allows you to do the design work in 3D space. The hardest part is translating a design to 3D and I think this tool has lots of potential to help that process. Not to mention you can see your design at 1:1 scale as you are "sketching" it. This can allow you to dial in some of the proportions and details more accurately , early on..I wouldn't consider it 3D modeling, more along the lines of 3D sketching. Those are just my thoughts. We'll see where the VR space goes for design and creation in the future. It definitely has a place.

Is this in the Quest2 or Q2 for Business? I am looking to design in VR for my business and need to know if I need to buy the Business edition for this specific function or personal. thankyou!

This was made with the original Oculus rift. But currently I use the Quest 2. No need to use the Quest 2 for business to use Gravity Sketch.

how different is your workflow when you sketch on the fly? do you always have side view sketches to work from?
@JamesWRobbins6 жыл бұрын
I don't usually work with side views. At that point I still start out with a rough wheel base and then just draw free hand..

How did you get the items you move to duplicate on the other side? When I use the smart move like you do @6:09 I just pull out the line but it doesn't mirror.

You should turn on mirror in your settings. Also each item has its own mirror option that can be toggled when editing that object

Is GS worth buying just for the standard version? I hear it only has the option for 4 layers :(.
@JamesWRobbins6 жыл бұрын
I'd say yes. Depending on what you are using it for you may not need more than that.. But for a vehicle you can use 1 layer for sketch lines, 1 for surfaces another for tires/wheels and another for details..This does depend on your workflow but it is definitely manageable. If you have a model with a lot of complexity that may change. It is a very new software and method of working/creation but has lots of potential. I think we're at at a very early stage for VR creation but is worth it in my opinion to get in it now.. Hope that helps..

Awesome thank you so much! Right now Ive been using Medium and AnimVR and having a blast doing work in VR. I agree we are at an early stage but the potential is crazy! When I found your channel and the work you do in Gravity Sketch it looks like it would be a really cool tool to use! Im not much of a hard surface modeler but it seems like its intuitive enough to help me with my project.
