Damn it Sam. I am that guy that always has to try and find why something will not work. Well I couldn't do it on this I get the same 19 channels i used to get on my $150.00 commercial antenna. Thanks Danny. Now as a ham radio operator I don't have a clue as to why I was skeptical I talk all over the world on 100 watts and a wire. SO this had to work just had to prove it to myself

Hi Danny. I'm a big fan. I was really pleased to see this video and the one before it. The word "NAROD" is an acronym for Not A Reflector Or Director. The NAROD Hats are their own individual 1/2 wave dipole antennas tuned for VHF. That's why they have to be 30" long. How do they transmit their signal to the rest of the Gray Hoverman antenna? It's not through a direct connection and it's not through capacitance. They transmit their signal through electromagnetic induction. When a wire receives an over-the-air TV signal, the wire experiences electrical current flow. The OTA TV signal is generated with AC electricity and therefore has peaks and troughs just like the electricity from the AC outlets in your house. When the OTA signal goes from peak to trough, the electricity in the wire flows in one direction. When the OTA signal goes from trough to peak the electricity flows in the opposite direction. The time it takes for two adjacent peaks to pass the same point determines the radio frequency - i.e. 200 MHz for VHF and 600 MHz for UHF. The frequency determines the TV channel number. When electricity flows through a wire, it creates an electromagnetic field around the wire. When the electricity flows in the opposite direction the magnetic field reverses polarity. This back and forth of the magnetic field causes the wire to radiate its own radio frequency which can be picked up by an adjacent wire which starts the whole thing all over again. This is how the NAROD hats are transmitting the VHF signal to the adjacent wire of the Gray Hoverman antenna. I hope that helps. Keep up the great videos.

Actually there is both capacitance and inductance involved. The combination forms a tuned circuit. Spacing in the gap between conductors affects both values and performance of the antenna as well.

You said it! I remember when 300 ohm twin lead was used especially the almost clear kind if you wanted to add another tv to the antenna all you needed to do is place another twin lead over the main lead and tape them together the signal went through the insulation and did not need to strip the wires to make the connection. Vhf has longer wave lengths than uhf so it worked fine without a direct connection. I never tried it with uhf because I did not have a outside uhf antenna.

1 1/2" PVC, 8 ga copper wire, 1/4" squares wire fencing (you can buy it 36" X 17' rolls, makes three reflectors). Since my original posting I have removed the RF amplifier which actually improved my signal.

Hi Danny. Built my Grey-Hoverman to your specifications and it works wonders. I was not picking up our CTV Ch 12 [VHF 204MHZ], so I custom cut two straight NARODS [top & bottom hats] to a 1/2 wavelength for 204mhz which is 27.5"/70cm and it again works great. @@danaharris503 if you know the wavelength of a frequency you cut that in half. That is your half wave. It is the distance from Peak to Peak an RF transmission. CB frequency wavelength 36 ft quarter wave antenna is 9 ft that's why they had that 9 foot steel whips on vehicles

Thanks, Danny! I just finished building one like you are showing. I didn't want to spend much, so I made it on 3/4" PVC, and mounted it on a 10' x 1 1/4" PVC pipe for a mast. I took down my Dish TV antenna and slid the mast into the hollow mount - a perfect fit! That put the antenna just above the roof line. All the info I found showed I'd probably get about 6-8 channels. I get 99 channels perfect using your measurements! I have a "PCT multimedia drop amplifier" in my main panel inside my home - BEFORE the splitter that goes to 6 rooms. I'm in the Inland Empire in Southern California, so I didn't have much hope for reception. But, thanks to your help, I'm cable free.

Ahoy Dr Hodges! (hope you don't mind me calling you that-a fella used that title in comments on this video-my sister jokingly calls me "Dr Doty" (my last name) because I fix/repair her cars/TV's/appliances/etc. Anyways-I built an antenna using your guidance videos with the intent to use at my home in Liberty, GA. I was having trouble receiving PBS TV. I somehow got diverted to trying out idea of using a dual antenna system-pointing one in direction to Wrens,GA to get PBS from there and second one pointing to Macon, GA for other channels. Amazingly it worked!! I found this idea on a fella's KZbin channel-it's called "Doug's Basement". The antennas are wired together using a 2 port signal splitter in reverse order (antennas connected to each of the 2 output ports and the combined signals sent from the one "input" port to the TV. I used 2 regular Channel Master antennas mounted on the same pole-one at top of pole the other approx 3 feet below. Doug says it's important to have a minimum distance of 2 feet between the two antennas and that the length of cables attached between antennas to the splitter be exactly the same. I am now installing the Gray Hoverman antenna I built at my sister's house in Florida. I have discovered we are not receiving a much desired PBS channel here. I had not added on the "top hat" wires and that is why I'm back here to see how to do that. (Hope it works!) Danny, just want to thank you.I made this antenna the Gray Hoverman using some metric measurements i found on the internet. I had it set temp for testing 10ft off the ground. I could not believe how amazing it worked. I went from getting 22 channels to 47 channels. Some of them about 70 miles away with full bars on the meter. works great if you want ill send you some pictures. I used PVC trim that i got at a big box store.

Hey Danny! Built my Hoverman with the hats using #6 awg copper. Found a roll of galvanized hardware cloth at Home Depot for $6.98. 1/2" square mesh works well for this antenna. It has no trouble picking up 23 digital channels just sitting on a stand when testing. Will be putting it in the attic for its final mounting spot. I have less than $30.00 in it and should do quite well for my purposes. Thanks again for the video!

FYI the plastic material you refer to on this is made for a exterior electrical conduit raceway, can be purchased in any hardware store. I was a commercial electrician for many years and would use this in office area's.

I built a double bay gray-hoverman (DBGH) tuned for RF channel 39, (WSB in Atlanta virtual ch 2), and it topped out with a gain greater than 20 dBi. I could find the weakest analog uhf station with a 3dB loop antenna, I mean so weak you could barely see anything through the snow, and then hook up the DBGH to the TV and the picture was perfect! No snow at all. Best damn uhf antenna ever in my opinion!

You're welcome for the NAROD idea. They are capacitivly coupled antenna elements, not reflectors or directors. The screen behind your antenna elements is the reflector... If you're going to make a lot of these, you might want to make up some sort of wire bending jig. Keep up the good work!

Scientific Answer: The NARODs are capacitively coupled to the existing elements. VHF TV signals induce an alternating current in the NARODs. Some of this alternating current is transferred to the existing elements because the parallel sections of the wire act like capacitors. Non-Scientific Answer: PFM (Pure Freaking Magic).

Something you may want to consider doing instead of using the electrical tape: maybe if you just put some heat shrink tubing on the copper and shrink it, then just use the screw in the center, and it may be enough for it to be about a 1/4 of an inch between the two copper wires. I think I may try that myself. Great build and tutorial, thanks!

The element that you have in question that is suppose to improve the upper vhf channel reception does not need to be physically ( electrically) connected to the rest of the antenna. It works on the same principal of the yagi antenna. when the yagi antenna is designed to work with the elements not electrically connected to the antenna, each element of the yagi antenna increases the signal strength going to the driven element of the antenna. Just wonder why this element that we are talking about was not divided in half as an driven element of a yagi antenna would normally be? I think it would work much better than the solid element that was used.

Hi Danny, I guess the other guys outlined the principle of "NARODS". Like you I couldn't comprehend how those horizontal top hats could possibly work not being connected to the two vertical elements, but they DO ! Listening to you talk about that, it dawned on me; reflectors aren't directly connected either; but they work too. I had the dimensions for the top hats written down for a long time, I even made them up at one point; before ever getting around to actually installing them on my "GH" sometime later. A "Cheap Trick" for good reflectors are the wire cookie cooling racks from the , "Everything is a $" type stores. They come in pairs for a Buck. It requires two pair. They have rounded corner frames and N0 sharp wires protruding to poke or snag things. They also appear very professional and commercially made on the Antenna. Do you have the dimensions for the alternative NAROD's on the antenna diagram on the left hand side ? Keep up the good work.

@HunterZBNS - During my Testing with BIG and SMALL Reflectors... To be honest, it doesn't make a difference. The only thing is that the Reflector needs to be 4" Inches away and that was very important!

I've come across some very hard "tempered steel wire 0.104" 12ga., it came from a fallen high voltage transmission line, it's the core wire inside of at least 7 aluminum wires. The question I have would this steel wire be alright to use as an antenna instead of copper or aluminum. It is so hard that it should be spot heated to cherry red to bend it, otherwise it will likely break if bent to the usual radius for copper ground wire? regards

Danny, if the new cross member braces are made out of metal, they may interfere with VHF reception. You might be better off with just using the new pieces at the top and bottom that connect to the center of the NARODs.

it is very interesting you are working on this modification because I had just been testing a similar thing. what I noticed was that a reflector on the bottom was better than a reflector top and bottom... So after seeing your video buy put my small reflector half inch hardware cloth the whip of the hoverman and about 8 inches tall tied to the bottom two elements with zip ties did increase signal on some channels not across the band. from + 85 - a 95.. I was sort of curious if you put the Hat on the bottom and not on the top what would it do to your test? also I believe - reduce the signal Level under 27 so you can truly see and increase is to skew off the transmitter and dropped the signal a little bit then try the test for example hoverman in the ultimate antenna..

Danny, I like your videos. I built the Hoverman with Hats, but I'm having trouble with them "shorting out" in rain. Seems that enough water flows over the wires for the hats to make contact with the center wires. Not sure what to do about it. I'm thinking of removing the hats and using your VHF antenna added to the Hoverman.

Another thing the seemingly "worthless rods" on an antenna do is increase "*gain*." If you skint 6" of insulation from a piece of antenna wire and bent the center wire left and the copper insulation sheath right, you would have an antenna called a "*dipole*". Might pick up stations 15 miles away with only that. A dipole's "*propagation pattern*" (shape of the area it receives signals from) will be a 30 mile sphere. Able to get just as strong a signal from the direction of The North Star as from the east or west horizon. No tv stations overhead, so that reception is *wasted.* By reshaping an antenna you can change the useful propagation pattern. Like if you had a balloon on your lap and you pressed down from the top, the "overhead pattern" is less while the north west south and east "*pattern*" extend farther away from the middle. The antenna is really no "stronger," but the *useful signal pattern* is increased.

Danny, I had built your Ultimate Antenna and was happy to get 33 channels. After I saw this antenna, I built one with the hats on it and now have 44 channels (No signal booster, just the antenna) ! @@hogcat858 - It suppose to cut in " half " = 14" each Side. Also, you need VHF and UHF to be separate. You join them with a Pre-Amp with UHF+VHF Input. Other than that, it will be no good!

Ok so i built this and it works perfect But why is it that sometimes i get 10 channels and some times over 50 and i have the position set perfect and its wired down good Not moving at all

Go to TV Fools.Com and see what the stations are in your area. If you're getting more than that it is what it's called tropospheric ducting. AKA propagation or skip. Troppo is normaly at night . It only works at night and under certain atmospheric conditions.

zip ties held the small reflector. typo...... on the questions about the additional elements, it is not a director it would have to be a reflector. for instance on a satellite antenna there is positive and negative in the lnb the reflector is passive in regards to the coax. there will be no continuity between the shield or the center conductor just like the modification that you did so I would go with reflector.

Thanks, Danny. However, you made this video on Jan 7 and the $12 reflector video on Jan 10. I don't see a video after that, which shows you comparing the different reflectors and the Hoverman w/o a reflector or w/ your $12 one. Is your referenced video called "REFLECTOR DEMOSTATIONS" or is it listed somewhere else? I was thinking the modified Hoverman, w/ the hats, and your $12 reflector might be a winner. I was just looking to see if you've mixed and matched the designs. Thanks again.

I am a little bit confused Danny. Whenever you are on the church land with your trailer you didn't have a hard time getting that channel. You got them all good signal. Just down the road at your house that channel don't work without a hat. I've seen every one of your videos 52 x LOL I've never seen a big antenna in the front yard miss a Channel that bad. It just stopped working on that channel have you figured out why?

I'm still not sold on the Hooverman though I bet its a good antenna. I will stick with the ultimate antenna, especially since I built one and it works fantastic, UHF and VHF. I'm waiting for the Ultimate vs Hooverman video!

you should use non metallic screws. They make plastic screws. The screws being conductive will mess with the 1/4" gap.

The conductive screws cover so little of the full length that it doesn't impact the performance much. Plastic screws are not very strong. A smaller diameter nut and bolt could work though. He could drill right through the beam he is attaching the rods to and place a nut and washer the far side.

This is where understanding how the vhf signal travels though the air. By installing the deflector your adding 3db to the vhf section effectively doubling signal strength. The other thing I'd like you to not there is no seperate balun for vhf vs uhf and a.combiner. it simply isn't necessary as the dimensions of each wisker is cut to only receive the new HD reduced uhf band. So there is no interference as the vhf elements are cut for a compleyely different MHz.

Danny, I noticed you do all your testing in the evening. Have you tested in the morning or afternoon hours when atmospheric conditions are less favorable? I find I can receive all available channels but during the daytime they vary wildly in signal with pixelation quite frequently. Sometimes I lose signals completely. Some days are perfect but most vary. I'm 68 miles from all tower that are only 2 to 3 degrees apart. I also have a pre amp hooked up. Tried with pre amp and without. Little difference. Is there any way to minimize this during the day? I suspect there is a lot of multi-path signal. Antenna is up about 16' . Is this just something everybody puts up with at these distances or would and 8 bay antenna help?

the vhf addon works by something called magnetic coupling

Coupling yes but not magnetic in this case. The two rods near each other out at the ends like that do a capacitive coupling.

The top and bottom unhooked section is a vhf director. For the low vhf channels.

You need to study "Resonance"Danny, it's how every antenna works.I'm not sure those extra piece will make a difference but it's very possible. "Capacitance" is another thing "Inductance" is another you should study a bit as well.
