I love this plant! I have a few, but after a couple of years they have “flopped” and I’m wondering if I should prune them back...? I can see fresh growth sprouting from the woods stems. One thing I love about santolina, in addition to it being evergreen, is that because of the aroma, deer won’t touch it.

Emily Knetzer Yes pruning them back will help bring new young Less stemy leaves and blooms . I did not know it as a deer repellent thanks for the tip. And thanks for your time and comment.

Garden Fever Thanks. Not sure if it could be used independently as a deer repellent but it is one plant in my garden that I know won’t be eaten. Probably due to both the texture and aroma. The deer around us are bold, but they don’t enjoy it.

Hi thanks for the video, please can you help I have one in my garden, looking really good and healthy , happy in the sun , but absolutely no flowers. Any idea why . Thanks

Susan Fryer first, thanks for watching my video and your comment. It depends it could be a few things . If you just planted it , it may not be old enough . Mine didn’t flower the first year . It did the second. If it has been growing a few years . It could be lack of nutrients in the soil, perhaps not enough sun . Or maybe a lot of sun but it’s to dry . If the plant is struggling in some way . It could also be the ph in the soil. I also found that if I trimmed and pruned it it encourages growth and flowering . ( following year ) . I hope this helps . Corey ~

Hello there, I have brought a grey Santolina from a local flowerist, I think the plant is rather old. I was really careful about watering (Trying not to overwater it after overwatering a few times) it but somehow the plant dried out, while it was still flowering. I tried watering it more regularly but it didn't help so I pruned it. Stem is really woody though. Also, I have a soil that has really good drainage yet it's a volcanic rock soil. So I was wondering if there is something wrong about my soil, or is it because the plant is quite old and it's actually dying?
@gardenfever41395 жыл бұрын
thestealthbox it’s hard to say for sure over a comment . If it dried out soon after you planted it . It didn’t take to it’s new place . It’s a evergreen and normally don’t need much water . If it was bushy and leggy it’s definitely older . It needs alkaline soil so I would do a cheep soil test to see for sure . If it’s acidic that could be the reason . I hope this helps some , let me know if you have anymore questions . Thanks for time and comment .

@@gardenfever4139 Thank you so much, it was definetely leggy and bushy. But I still think that I might have done something wrong that made it dry out sooner than it shoul be. I will try the soil test too. Thank you for your care again, have a nice day

From what i leanrned, santolina is from aster/sunflower family, not lavender. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santolina

Great, thanks for sharing and thanks for time for watching my video. If you go to that same Wikipedia article and look at Species types and click it it will lead you to a lavender cotton or cotton lavender Santolina . Front page states it as within sunflower-family . go into the species tab and it states it as a cotton lavender. So I guess there’s some debate about it great comment though thanks for bringing it to the forefront.
