Hi, a cracking run through. I was tired of my grandson (9 years old) beating me with dice games so we've played OHS. It didn't matter we used cards he still batters me. Notes on our play for those reading the comments. We use 54mm WW2. We can handle 20+ figures each playing on a 6 x 4 ft table with plenty of homemade houses. The biggest variant on the rules we don't turn cards for morale. He likes a fight to the finish. Probably because he's always winning. We don't use a measuring stick. We can judge six inches. He loves the "red is dead" and always has a close eye when I'm turning my cards. For the higher cards I use some tokens to track the number of activation points used. Is it wrong when we move into finish a downed enemy we call it "stabby stabby". We haven't used the rules for tanks. A friend says the rules are OK as he only used one tank. Its a clever game. Each card turn adds to the tension. Thanks

Awesome! Thanks for the extra tips! I will definitely use them when I start my new OHS series! And, don’t give up: one day you might defeat that boy! 😂

A question came up about when you shuffle the decks. (I have been playing that the decks are shuffled after a Joker is drawn and before the start of the new turn, but this is not correct.) Here is John Lambshead's own explanation: "You shuffle the cards after the deck has been used up so one starts again with a newly randomised deck." So, the turn ends with a draw of a Joker, but the deck is only shuffled once the last card is drawn.

Great overview, I picked this book up a month ago but haven't actually played a game yet and it was nice to see a visual representation of the rules. The only thing I wish he would have added to the book was more explanation of force building like what kind of values to use for motivation when building a force.

Thanks so much! I agree with you there. The rules probably require a bit of homebrew. This is something I will be working through in the coming narrative campaign I will be running. 😊👍

I was dead set against using cards for gaming, but after getting these rules and playing a few times I found it to be loads of fun. So far I've only played a few WW2 games but feel the want to try it in the wild west. Great review!!!

Thank you! I have really been enjoying it! The card mechanic and Joker randomness has been fun, and a nice change-up from dice systems. I have a new series in the pipeline using this system, so things are going to get really interesting really soon!

I just bought this book. I want to use these rules to play multiple eras, as well as my sci-fi and fantasy miniatures. I was looking for rules that would allow me to play quickly and easily. Plus, I was tired of having to use multiple rules. With age, I have less and less desire to complicate things when playing. 😁 Thank you for the explanations, it allowed me to clarify some rule points. 😎👍

@@GrayArmyGaming Thank you ! I have just one question: when you activate your model you need to spend 1 action for move and 1 action point for firing? Or 1 Action Point for the whole? When English is not your first langage, it's difficult to understand some rules.
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 4 ай бұрын
@@jerrymail I have understood it as 1 point for movement (3 for second movement and 5 for third movement) and 1 point for (normal) shooting. 😊👍

Thanks for this. I have this book on order and have seen lots of other KZbin offerings about the mechanics etc. but yours is by far the best. So your great video will make it even easier for me to get into these rules quickly. I kinda think that Mr Lambshead would have welcomed your contribution all those years ago when the book was first published - just enough to create interest but not enough to take away the need to buy the book to get the full flavour!

Thanks for covering these rules! Would love to see some playthroughs. I really enjoy the action point system and variable turn length. My only issue is playing scenarios with a fixed number of turns. 6 turns could be a VERY short game, depending on when the jokers show up.

I have not played yet, it looks great. I have noticed that some comments on FB and YT point out that the author intended that the decks be reshuffled only after they have been depleted, not when a Joker is drawn. Does it matter much? I will find out when I do some play throughs.
