I'd like to give a shoutout to a few people that helped me to research stuff for this video, firstly the SourceRuns Discord and KZbin channels for giving me some help learning about Half-Life speedrunning strats... here are the links if you're curious yourself!

I've also been really addicted to the KZbin channels MarphitimusBlackimus, Leadhead and
lymphoid, all of whom make some kind of Half-Life-related content. Most of the information in this video is gleaned from them and there's lots of really interesting stuff to find there that I didn't come close to covering.

One final dorky Half-Life related thing, and I meant to mention this in the stream because it was so cool but I never got around to it, is the video "Black-Mesa Disaster on one map". Basically someone made a video mapping out the movements and locations of all 3 protagonists of Half-Life, Half-Life: Opposing Force, and Half-Life: Blue Shift in relation to one another; the video's incredibly well-edited with lots of great use of in-game voice lines, sound effects and ambient music, and it's pretty insanely comprehensive in its detail as well. It's really eerie and unsettling and it occupied my thoughts for the better part of a week. It may be the sort of thing that will only have that effect on you if you've already played all 3 of those games... but regardless, check it out!

It is intended. The laser sight code checks the shooter of it so you wouldn't be able to control other player's rockets in Deathmatch, otherwise rockets would go crazy if you both had your laser sights on. However, there's code that "bypasses" this check with the tank, allowing you to control them as if they were yours. HL is full of goddamn small details many people would never experience in a single playthrough, makes you appreciate the game even more!

it actually makes perfect sense that your laser rocket guidance system, stolen from the US military, affects other laser-guided rockets that the US military uses that having been said, that tank looks like the Bradley IFV, and I believe the Bradley IFV's missiles are actually "fly by wire"--they literally have a spool of wire attached to the back of the rocket, that hooks into a set of contacts in the launcher, which in turn allows the launcher to direct the rocket. So while it would totally make sense _assuming their rockets are also laser-guided,_ it's still jank
@op8288
@op8288 3 жыл бұрын
Wait, what? Literal wires trailing out from supersonic, many-kilometer-ranged missiles? With rocket engines that burn in excess of 800C? You can't be serious. Edit: Holy shit. I legitimately thought that fly-by-wire was simply replacing hydraulics in planes with electrical systems. Apparently, the Germans made the first of these in 1944. AND made the missiles spin for that sweet gyroscopic. Woah. No wonder why there's such a Wunderwaffen mythos around Nazi tech.
@TehNoobiness

That can be an amazing topic or video essay, compilation, playlist, research folder...when we do something that seems intended or normal, not a glitch, cheat, or something that developers did not intend, but we don't know it's actually unique or at least rare, unintended to be a solution. Thankfully, though to a point it can make a game too easy, having that level of flexibility and choices in how to approach a problem, not even dialogue or story, necessarily, just, like, which weapons you choose and how they're saved or used in a scenario in this game, for example, is *usually* good.

“Half life and portal being in the same universe is a little too game theory for me” Vale several years ago: literally confirmed their in the same universe and Portal 2 literally has a reference to the Borealis and Half Life 2 Ep 2 literally shows the Appature logo on the ship in the video footage.

What you didn't chill halfway up the ladder in the blast pit rocket test chamber to get a front row seat to the tentacles getting melted? Because you can avoid dying there if you stand on the right spot on the ladder.

I recently got this game, and whenever I play a singleplayer game I play on the hardest difficulty, and the difference between medium (the difficulty grayfruit plays) and difficult is huge. For example, the headcrab damage goes from 2 damage all the way to 20, and they take about 6 pistol shots to die

Fun fact to see the duct tape holding this game together, just add -dev 5 (or - developer 5) to the advanced game options. the navigation errors alone are surprising, the sources to the troublesome ai I have yet to find

Portal and Half Life take place in the same universe. Aperture and Black Mesa were canonically rivals. Glados references Black Mesa helping Chell at the end of Portal in Still Alive, with "Maybe Black Mesa. That was a joke. Haha. Fat chance." Alluding to their destruction in the Resonance Cascade
