part of this reminded me of a book i have called "the armageddon effect". a tiny black hole is orbiting around and partly through earth, and getting bigger. they have to get rid of it somehow or in 7 years it would "eat" enough of the earth's core and mantle to make earth collapse. at first they thought they had thousands of years, but then smsone realized that it was growing at an Exponential rate.
