Replacing the water pump on a 2005 Dodge Stratus 2.4L DOHC engine. While replacing the pump, it is also a good idea to change the timing belt while everything is torn down.

Great Work! Much Appreciated! I've got 2 tips for everyone attempting this type of job: 1. If you have to remove the timing belt pulley's, loosen the bolts before you take off the belt...much easier and no worry about moving them as long as the belt is in place. This also goes for the crank pulley bolt...don't remove any belts until all the required bolts are broke loose. 2.Before you remove the timing belt, line everything up as required (TDC, etc.) and mark the pulley's and covers as shown, but also mark the old timing belt with the same position marks. Also, put a mark on the crankshaft pulley anywhere the belt is in contact and mark the belt too. Remove the old belt and lay it next to the new belt. Transfer the marks to the new belt (if you're OCD, you can count the spaces just to be sure). Now your new belt has the same marks as the old belt and when you install it you know you've got it right if the marks on the belt and the pulley's line up.

Nice video really helped a lot. I would just like to add that on the PS pump @4:21 loosen the pivot bolt on the other side. The top bolt on the PS Pump was a 15mm and from the bottom is much easier that the top if you use a 15mm long handle wrench form the HFT's long handle wrenches set. There is a tab at the top and bottom where a 1/2 breaker bar drive will fit to move the pump up and down, had to use a hammer though. A radiator hose pick speeds up removing the rad hoses.

hey i thank you !, i have looked at very many different approches to this timing belt issue..... mine has 120 + thou on it.....no bullshit...... i was wondering if i could ever find one that really did show a comprehensive way to get the belt done right..... i seen yet another video that states that if you have steering pump problems..... it could be the screen & not the pump..... could help to put new fluid in after cleaning up the fluid canister screen........... thanks for this video..... i am damm sure going to use it.

Thank you for making this tutorial! Any tips for torquing the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft gears? I'm assuming they're going to rotate when being torqued. Should I remove the valve cover and hold the cam with a wrench? Do they make a special spanner wrench to keep the crankshaft pulley from rotating? Thanks again.

In the video, the homemade spanner I used to hold the camshaft sprockets while loosening is also what I used to tighten them. It was made from a $8 steel bar, four 1/4" bolts, and two 1/2" bolts. After making the video, I welded it all together to make it "prettier" and flatter, but it worked great in its crude state. I also used the same spanner for holding a crankshaft pulley while tightening the bolt. Maybe I'll do a video on making a homemade spanner! Thanks for watching!

i can't believe dodge put the fuckin water pump in this location. I've done a few fixes on the wife's car but it appears I've met my match with this issue since I have basic tools and didn't want to spend days and more money for tools and/or accessories to do this task. I won't ever get another dodge in my lifetime. But like one comment stated, awesome detailed video so thanks for that.

Yes, I agree with everyone - great vid - very informative --- HOWEVER --- and that's a big HOWEVER, you spent little time on the put back together project!!!! My 06 Stratus is a 2nd vehicle, thank goodness because it's been on jacks in my driveway for two days now. I keep coming back to your video, and one other on the '06 year model....and to my amazement, I have gotten all the way to the water pump!!!! YAY!! There are some major things to figure out when putting it all back....like how do get that xxxking crankshaft pulley back on?? How to you "clamp" the camshaft pulleys to get the belt on, when there's nothing to clamp them to? And now I'm wondering...how the hell do you get both the engine mount and the engine to mount brackets in??? I can get either one in by itself, but then can't get the other one in! WTF!!! Anyway, I haven't given up yet, hopefully something will come to me quickly! I have two statements to make: 1) Don't buy a Dodge. I have it straight from a customer service person with Dodge that the reason they design the vehicles the way they are is because they want you the customer to go back to the dealer to have repairs made. They don't want the customers to get hurt while working on the vehicle - - LOL, BS - they want your money. 2) If you're a backyard mechanic, like me, don't do this work - it isn't worth it. I had 3 estimates done on this project, average of $495 labor (that's not a Dodge dealer!). I have spent 2 days working on it - just beginning to put back together - it's just not worth it!! Now, if you can help me with the mounts - I'd sure appreciate it!!!! Joel

Get the 1/4" and 3/8" combo. The 1/2" is huge and would work better for large trucks. If you can swing it, get the low-profile socket set...it adds a LITTLE more clearance in tight spaces. Thanks for watching!

New rough belt and old smooth pulleys are bound to not mesh perfectly and make a little noise. I shouldn't be disturbingly loud, but it won't be silent for sure. The top timing cover is easy to remove, so inspect the belt every 25 miles or so to be sure it's not showing edge wear from rubbing on something.

Not sure about the 2.7...a friend brought this one (his girlfriend's car) over last year. And as far as taking it on yourself, that depends. Do you have the extra cash...do you have a pretty good arsenal of tools to handle most any job? This vehicle ties the timing belt with the water pump...pretty sure the same for the 2.7L. If you do take it on, the main thing to remember is to keep the timing in place throughout the project...don't let it move and get out of sync!

Just bought one of these and the water pump fails 1 month later. Why does it have to be such a difficult process. Auto shops want $800-900 to fix it, so I guess I'll attempt it myself. A pump kit is only $68 from Rock Auto, so it won't hurt to try.

Mine was super close..I had like an 1/8th inch of clearance. loosen the engine mounting bolts and try to push the engine to create a bigger gap...pry bar and block of wood should do the trick if you just need that 1/8th"

On the crankshaft pulley there is a mark that lines up with a mark on the block. The camshaft pulleys have marks that line up with each other. When installing the belt, make sure they stay that way. That is how you align crank and cam pulleys. Also make sure you turn the crank a few times to see if they line up again and again. If not, adjust like in the video.

hi I was turning the wrong bolt on the PS Pump, found the correct 13mm. I have a 2006 Stratus and the cam pulley bolts are 18mm... LOL somehow I got the intake off and on the exhaust I thought I rounded off the bolt. After I discovered an 18mm fit on the other good sprocket bolt I took a file and cleaned up all metal that had been gouged by the 19mm socket, now the 18mm fits on the bolt.

I plan to never again by a Dodge product due to the ridiculousness of this repair. I changed the timing belt in my Hyundai in about 3 hrs. New water pump in my Mazda took 2 hrs....water pump/belt in this Dodge....12 HOURS! Lost me as a customer forever.
