My uncle had a black leather jacket. He kept it hid in a rose bush outside his bedroom. He'd wear it to & from school, after he got home he went thru the house, he'd open the window & grab it. That WAS really taboo back then.

I'm 50 yrs old now and grew up in the the 70s around my dad and his buddies from the late 50s/early 60s greaser era. They were all backyard mechanics still greasing their hair back then and untill this very day!!! These cats are diehards! I went thru my phases back in the day but never took to any styles of the 80s or 90s. I couldn't stand the pastels or the alternative scene so I kept doing my own thing. I was born an Elvis and Doo Wop fan. My father brought me up on that music and never diverted. I am a true old soul that was born too late but glad I can keep the greaser alliance flowing. It's classic Americana at its best. Can't take it away, so keep it going. Brother, we are cut from the same cloth. I'm into my Rock n roll, my drums, drawing, my pomade, tattoos and a killer pair of denim. My dad told me how he would dress then at 17. He would wear black tshirts backwards under a nice colorded button up shirt. Made it look cooler having the t-shirt collar higher on the front of his neck. Gave it a style that was different. If he was in the train smoking and no where to put the ashes he would tap them into the cuffed pant leg to not be disrespectful. Just the small things that are the coolest. Glad I found you, man. Your channel is very cherry! Rockin' Retrow from Connecticut

Brilliant account of your dad & buddies. I wish I could see a pic of them how they looked in the 70/80s Back in Spain it was very common to see guys from the 50s still sporting small quiffs wearing typical 70/80s clothes (no association with RnR). Best wishes 👍

My dad and uncle WERE greasers in the late 50's and early 60's. My uncle was a tough guy, a trouble maker. They wore leather jackets, rolled up levis, engineer boots, greasy hair with pomps and duck tails etc. I saw old b&w photos of them. But they preferred country music. So I don't think it is arbitrary that one HAS to listen to old school rock to be a greaser.

Good video, man. You really know your shit. You're definitely a student of the genre and the culture. And yes, to be a greaser, rockabilly, etc, you have to have an appreciation for the culture and the music BUT you are not limited to it. I still have a love for 90s rap and r&b because that's what I listened to as a kid and it still stays with me today despite the rolled up jeans, t-shirt and pomp.

One question .What is the diference between greasers and rockabillys? Maybe greasers in eeuu and rockabillys in Europe? And What about rockers and teds?.
@krypticart63067 жыл бұрын
Good question greasers are more of your hot rodders, bikers, and street style guys, while your rockabilly cats and hep cats are more of your scene people. They prefer to dress up a bit nicer, go to the shows, go out dancing etc etc. It's all related pretty closely with certain emphasis placed on certain parts. The rockers and the teds are similar to what I described. The rockers are like your American greasers leather, boots, motorcycles, tough guy street types and your Teds were more of your Rockabilly hep cats with the nice clothes, going out dancing, and partying. All in all it's all pretty closely related.

Stay cool but not cocky. Don't let anyone punk you, if they try either let it roll off your back or punk them right back. Make sure you do what makes you happy and never let anyone shit on you whether it's students or faculty. Depending on your classes you most likely wont need much, but if you do i recommend a binder (1" or 1.5") to hold your papers and other things, keep a pen in your pocket and pencil on your ear. This is what's worked for me so if it doesn't for you switch it up a bit.

Speak on brother! Another thing that most normals and conformists (civilians) don't understand, is that there are several different subcultures within the Rockabilly Worldwide Community: Rockabillies, Psychobillies, Greasers, Teddy Boys, and Rockers. Rockers are the most misunderstood because there are actually 2 different subcultures using the Same name; in the USA, since the late 1970s, rockers have been long-haired musicians and fans of Heavy Metal, Rock, and Hard Rock; obviously having nothing to do with the Rockabilly community that I'm talking about here. But, in the 1950s, in England, there were a group of kids that rode British motorcycles, loved American Rock'n'Roll and Rockabilly, and emulated the "greaser look" (Like Brando's the Wild One), but mixed it with blue-collar, working-class British street style, emulating the English heroes of 50s England, the R.A.F. of WWII, and they were called Ton-Up Boys, and later on called Rockers by the Mods. They were in essence, the British version of the American Greaser, although they were into British motorcycles, not hotrods. These Rockers evolved from the 50s Ton-Up Boys into the 60s anti-thesis of the Mods, the Mods who were into Blues Rock, R&B, Soul, Motown and Ska, and Italian scooters. These Rockers were into 1950s American and British Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, and café racer motorbikes. Today, there are still hundreds of Ton-Up boys/Rockers all over the world, mostly in the UK and Europe, but also several dozen in the USA. And although there are thousands of "café racers" in America, there are still very few actual rockers (in the British sense) in the States. It's all about a specific, uniform style; blue-collar pride; British motorbikes like BSA, Norton, and Triumph; and good 'ol 1950s Rock'n'Roll, DooWop, and Rockabilly, like Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Elvis, Billy Fury, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, Johnny Kidd, Cash, The Rapiers, Johnny Burnette, Cliff Richard, Vince Taylor, and Little Richard, etc. Cheers mate

Can I still be a greaser if I have 3 ft dreadlocks, wear baggy jncos, pirate shirts, only listen to progressive death polka and spend all my time skiing and smoking PCP?
@FREDSDEADBABE7 жыл бұрын
I think I am definitely a mixture of original and modern with a hint of psychobilly. Sometimes I wear bowling shirts with hot rod designs and such or western shirts with skulls and roses but it depends on the occasion and where I'm at. Everyday wear is probably t shirt or button up flannel, jeans, jacket, and cowboy boots or chucks. Sometimes it's a plain white tshirt (untucked because nobody wants to see my root beer gut) but other times it'll be a black rockabilly/psychobilly band shirt. I of course have some creepers and a denim vest with patches and pins on it. Can't say I would go full on psychobilly, just don't have the hair for it. Prefer a classic or slightly exaggerated pompadour or other classic style. The ignorant comments I usually get are "Goth Elvis" or "Punk Johnny Cash", "Rejected Grease Actor", "Jock Mechanic" "Tunnel Snake From Fallout" and even Ricky from Trailer Park Boys. Those are usually neutral to nice ones (I kinda liked being called a Punk Johnny Cash). Somebody said I looked like a Kardashian male or a Douchebag Guido from Jersey Shore and those ones actually urked me because of how uneducated they were. No matter the insults, I'm not turning back on who I am. Been a greaser since 13, but it's only getting started.

Is there any KZbin channels about being a punk rocker? I think this greaser era is cool and all but I think I would fit in with a punk rock group better
