Great Blue Heron hunting gophers

The female Great Blue Heron ate at least three gophers yesterday when I videotaped her but she had at least 10 attempts. I also got the male catching one but I'm sure that was at least his second of the day but that will be on a later video.

Always reminds me of a heron trying to swallow a frog that has it's hands on the herons throat and can't swallow the frog!

A gopher is a pretty big meal for a heron. With a little research I found that the average heron weighs about 5 lbs., a gopher nearly 1/2 lb.

We need some of those birds permanently in my neighborhood. Sometimes they’ll stop in, but never stay. We have gophers coming out of our yin Yang here.

Birds like the GBH need wetland areas but development is destroying too much of out wetlands.

Yeah and this is a very small heron. I know she ate three gophers in about an hour and was looking for more. She isn’t always that successful but she has an amazing appetite

Yeah I have seen some of predatory chickens. Turkeys can be quite predatory too.
