Great Blue Heron Quietly Calling

A Great Blue Heron Quietly Vocalizing February 10, 2019, at Turtle Pond in Central Park, New York City. "Great Blue Herons are most vocal on the breeding grounds, where they greet their partner with squawking roh-roh-rohs in a “landing call” when arriving at the nest. A disturbance can trigger a series of clucking go-go-gos, building to a rapid frawnk squawk that can last up to 20 seconds. If directly threatened, birds react with a screaming awk lasting just over 2 seconds." The Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Beautiful video. I used to live near a heron nesting ground on the Tennessee River. The real call of the Great Blue Heron is a very loud "GROCK" as it flies overhead or is startled at night by a predator ie something. Yes, it sounds like a pterodactyl, but while hunting they are usually silent, like all good fisherman, so they don't scare away the fish.

I have seen 2 Great Blue Herons since December, a young heron and this beautiful adult in breeding plumage stopping in Central Park (I assume) for a rest and some fish before moving on. I hope they visit you soon as well! Enjoy your week Celine!

I live close to the beach so we have one heron that always returns to the park next to my house to take shelter on stormy days! I’ve also seen him watch people play tennis. Very shy bird.

Incredible capture! Are you in Central Park all the time? How in the world do you see all these things?! I'm there every morning walking my pups, but usually never get to see all the birds in your videos.

Thank you! I have been trying to visit the park at least once a week. Good areas to visit are the Ramble and the bodies of water. Since dogs are a threat to birds would be best to leave them at home when you're out birding. Look for those with binoculars. Most birders are happy to share what they have seen and where!
