To skid row: Just ask actor Billy Bob Thornton if potatoes "are good for you". Sure, they're good to an extent, but eat them all the time and you can develop health issues like Billy Bob did from eating nothing but potatoes all the time. Apparently her and her family were lucky since they are them a lot, too.

I think it is for one meal, which makes sense. Because I am sure they spent around the same per meal back then during the depression. of course it would be more like a quarter or less due to inflation.

Luke Posadas - $4.50 for one meal for 4 people, so about $1.11 per person. Should be entirely possible today, serving e.g. Pasta w/peas, rice w/lentils, chili sin carne or things like that, foods they used to turn to when they had little way back when and also I'm sure many turn to these foods today many places... ☺️

The simplicity of it all almost brings a tear to my eyes. No dieting/keto/gluten free/vegan and other complicated terms, or counting calories, just pure simple cooking. And when people were lucky enough to grow their own vegetables I bet they tasted even better. I find most recipe books have complicated meal options. Will definitely try some of Clara's recipes.

We had a big garden when I was a kid. As soon as each vegetable would mature we’d start eating. One of the first was the leaf lettuce and radishes. A lettuce and mayo sandwich on a hot day is so good. Mom would make many different pickles and canned vegetables that would last all winter. Didn’t realize how lucky I was!

Grandma Sue died in September 2013 from surgery complications (they went in to fix a hernia, and had a hard time getting her bleeding to stop. She slipped into a coma and died about a day or two afterwards). She was my dad’s mom. Grandma Hallie passed just months later in April 2014 of cancer. She was my mom’s mom. One things for certain. Clara’s mama never sent her family to bed w their tummies growling. Both her parents did the best they could with what they had. What’s so amazing is the wedding photo of Clara’s mama and papa. Clara mother was SO VERY young when they married. Both still children themselves. Yet she still found a way to keep her family full and healthy using whatever her young husband brought home in pay. Times have certainly changed! I wonder what Clara‘s mama would think if she knew in the year 2022 people were still eating her depression recipes? Yes….Times have certainly changed…& will continue to do so forevermore

Most likely its because the nutrients were lacking in those potatoes. I once only ate potatoes for like 4 years, the lack of nutrients caused most of my hair to fall out and my skin to loosen. Also in my village we typically eat our elderly before they die of old age, grandmas like this are rich in vitamins and minerals.

I just found this lovely lady in August 2017. I thought she was in her 80s! I hadn't checked the date on the videos. Then she gave her age and I was amazed at her energy. It's wonderful that the videos live on in tribute to her memory. Her recipes remind me of some of the dishes I was fed as a child that included odd but very tasty ingredients. I just now realized my mother must've cooked those dishes during the Depression and was still cooking them in the 1950s when I was born. Ty to Clara's family for sharing your wonderful grandmother.

I just came across one of her videos yesterday and began watching them back to back. I didn't notice how many years ago they were made. Today, I saw the video where her grandson said she had passed away, in 2013. I didn't know her but I actually cried. I feel like I knew her. That may sound silly, but my heart is broken. I will continue to watch her videos. Please don't remove or stop posting them. ❤❤❤

Just discovered this beautiful woman today and I conts stop binging her videos. She reminds me exactly of my Grandma Gilda and her Sister Aunt Josie. They both grew up during the depression and and knew how to make the best of any situation thrown their way. My grandma has been dead now for about 6 years but her older sister Aunt Jo is now 100 years old and she was the cook in the family for sure. She could turn very inexpensive ingredients into a masterpiece just like Clara. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos they are not just recipes, they are a history of how special the Greatest Generation really was.

I think we need a website where we can share recipes inspired by Clara. I just made a sweet potato soup that was inspired by Clara’s cooking. It was sooo good, incredibly easy, nutritious, of course! And I only started watching Clara last night. I watched about 10 episodes and read massive amounts of comments and like everyone said, you really feel good, and nostalgic too, after watching Clara. Thanks so much for making these vids, what a sweet lady!
