Any leftover bits of cheese, shredded or grated, are wonderful cooked into potato soup. Or, if you have a cheese rind, freeze it until making a pot of soup. Add the rind as the pot simmers and when the soup is done, fish the rind out and discard.

That's an awesome idea for using up scraps and adding flavor.

I like bell peppers in w the rice and beans, add Mexican spices, and garlic salt, and it’s perfect. And potato mushroom soup could be good. Great video, thanks!

I make potato soup for my family too. I add celery to mine. To thicken, I add potato flakes. I call it poor man's soup. My mom made it with a lot of broth and we ate lots of saltines crushed in it. They were very cheap years ago.
@strawberrymoonhomestead14 күн бұрын
Wonderful! Yes I remember saltiness, had them a lot as a child as well.

I purchase the store brand of saltines that are still the cheapest cracker I can buy. At Grocery Outlet I can still find them marked down to dollar a box . But you may not have a discount store where you are and realize Canadian prices are higher .

The meals all look great. I cook on a low budget and often make super simple meal. Every household needs or should start growing a garden as well. Just in our backyard we are able to grow 80% of own veggies that we can and preserve for the winter.

Your Depression Era meals looked great and they are very time applicable to us now as well, with grocery prices being what they are. Thank you for sharing your meal ideas.

While at university my housemates and I decided to make a big pan of vegetable stew. The only cabbage available was a red one. Unfettered we chopped it up and three it into the rest of the vegetables which included onions, potatoes and leeks. We threw in some pearl barley and pasta and left the resulting mass on the gas hob to cook. We, being students, didn't really take any great care with it so the next time we looked at it was when it was ready to eat. We took off the saucepan kid and were greeted by the sight of a very mauve stew. Everything was mauve. Most of the ingredients were white and so has soaked up the colour of the cabbage. It was actually quite delicious but only if you didn't look at it. Lesson learned. Savoy cabbage from the on!

Undeterred not unfettered! And threw not three! Bloody autocorrect!

I save money at the grocery store by not going. The supply chain problems had me lose faith in traditional ways of obtaining what we need. Not as crazy as it sounds, i promise. Its not as easy but its rewarding. I buy my grains, beans, dried fruit nuts, pasta and coffee in bulk every 3 months. Other shelf stable stuff too. I grow most of our vegetables. We buy what we cant grow at the farmers market along with dairy and a small amount of meat, maybe 2 or 3x a month. Cleaning supplies, 2x yearly on sale ar Walmart usualy. Reusable coffee filters, a tea ball and paper towels all cost something up front but last forever. As an example Breakfast today is homemade Panettone, and Italian Christmas bread with dried fruit. Lunch a white bean vegtable soup with fresh bread Dinner pasta with a tomato sauce that is loaded with red lentils, carrots and garlic. A family favorite. Desert is garden berries over vanilla ice cream and popcorn wirh a Christmas movie. We all pitch in to get the cooking done. It builds strong relationships and has saved money. In 5 years we have lost a collective 130lbs. 5 years. 5 people.

@strawberrymoonhomestead3692 - The pandemic caused us to rethink a lot of the things we were doing. My daughter is a celiac and is limited on what she can eat because of it. When her stuff started to disappear we made changes. We eat an egg based meal 2x a week and wirh all the cooking and baking use about 30 eggs per week. So, we got chickens. It's been an amazing journey. Lots of fun but it's been a big change. We moved 100 miles south and went from a 2500 sq ft home with 1/2 an acre to a 1200 sq ft house with 2+ and raise most of our vegetables and some of our fruit. Ill freely admit that without the support of my family we couldn't do all this. I'll also say that by doing this, we are not feeling the pinch of higher grocery prices. What we pay has remained stable for the past few years.
