Now, I had seen film of divers swimming with Sleeper/Greenland Sharks in the brackish parts of the St Lawrence Seaway in surprisingly shallow water. I supposes those parasites that attach to the sharks' corneas can't survive brackish water.

I will never count out the chance to have sharks in the great lakes because I was present when a friend caught a peranna in Western Wisconsin and they are not supposed to survive the cold water either. Bull sharks are tropical/semi tropical, so they will have their limits with water temps as far as venturing north goes. And this Biologist Steve Kessel talking about ballast tanks and bull sharks hitching rides, well he's very uninformed regarding ballast systems on large cargo ships. Yes they can and do take in and transfer smaller marine species to areas making them an invasive species , as they have in the past, but we're talking tiny fish/shellfish. Those intake systems even on large ships are small , but the obstacle would be the filters to prevent debris getting through and damaging those intake pumps.

I worked fisheries for 6 years across from kingston in the field daily doing netting, fisherman surveys and setting up database. We never netted a shark and the biologists I worked with were older - They didnt ever see one either. No fisherman ever reported one. It makes sense a bull could pull it off every now and then, if the cold water didnt outright kill it. In fish birds, and other wildlife, "accidentals" happen all the time. Bulls are more tropical so it probably woudnt happen often. But it could happen. But I'm classifying this like I do bigfoot, until you show me real proof - "prolly not"

It would definitely be a long stretch for a Bull Shark to travel through the Northern Gulf of St Lawrence up the St Lawrence river given that the northern Gulf is cool waters , averaging 15 Celsius in July. A bull shark in water temps that low would be unprecedented. The furthest North verified I believe is Southern Long Island in 2020 in record water temps of 26 Celsius

@@mannycheese1166 Are the cooler waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence lethal to a bull shark?
@mannycheese1166
@mannycheese1166 2 жыл бұрын
@@redneckreefer6992 That's something I couldn't answer. Perhaps an Ichthyologist would know that. I do believe that a Bull shark hasn't been verified in water temps lower than 68 F ' There's some interesting studies on tagged east Coast Bull sharks and studies from the U of Florida and the U of North Carolina. They sure love their warm waters. They will not birth until water temps hit 85F. There was a study a few years ago that combined every tagged study of Bull Sharks since 1970.(East Coast) Of the 2000+ subjects involved, only 3 made it as far North as Delaware Bay. They don't seem to be big on migration like white sharks, blues or Makos. No doubt they would become lethargic in cooler waters and eventually die, as happens to other ocean tropical species. How long, I have no idea. I assume it wouldn't be very long or we would see incidents of bulls in cooler water temps.(lower than 68F that is) Tiger sharks seem to handle cooler water temps better. The record low would be 63 F (17 C). One was caught off Nova Scotia, Canada in the late 70's. No doubt following the warm Gulf Stream that flows out by Sable Island.
@redneckreefer6992
@redneckreefer6992 2 жыл бұрын
@@mannycheese1166 that's pretty good info though. One could infer then that even if one made into the cooler waters of the gulf of st lwrn the additional time required to make it into the great lakes would be prohibitive. If there isnt another freshwater tolerant shark species - then a shark in the great lakes is next to impossible.

Can someone PLEASE answer a question of mine who is a authority on sharks ,particularly the bullshark ? I live in Lower Bucks County, Pa. The Delaware River comes from the Delaware Bay through Delaware through New Jersey/ Philly where Penns Landing is, on the other side is Camden, Nj. Continuing north it turns to Bensalem, Bristol,Tullytown,and Yardley,Pa. The depth varies being 50 ' is the deepest. Across from Philly, there are estuaries on the Jersey side that go on and on,branching off in so many directions. What are the chances of a bull shark making it up this far ? Over 10 years ago a Beluga whale was spotted traveling through Philly and made it into Yardley, lower Bucks Co. Pa. What are the chances of bull sharks making their way through these waters every summer or is it a freak incident where a particular shark gets disoriented for whatever reason and makes its way in these waters ? Anyone who is a authority, I would appreciate your knowledge. Thank u

@budliite I don't think the Delaware River ever gets to 85. That's pretty warm . However, there are stories of bull sharks making there way up other rivers . I thought I saw a video where a b.shark was located in Illinois. We all know Jaws was inspired by a series of shark attacks 40 miles ( if I am not mistaken it was Tom's River or Seaside Heights,Nj.) up a creek in New Jersey .If a creek or river tends to reach 85 degrees it can't be deep ,right ? It needs to be shallow for the sun to hit the bottom and warm up everything to that degree .I will say, a long time ago my region was going through sustained drought which brought the levels of salt water further up the Delaware River ,past Philly. That year I caught a big blue crab in a fresh water creek that empties into the Delaware.Anyway,I find the topic truly fascinating. Thank you for your reply 👍✌

Yea Bull sharks in fresh water has been well documented. There are two issues here, water temperature and no physical proof of any sharks in the great lakes like a caught shark or pictures and video. So this i hyperbolic bullshit.
