Skynyrds 'One More From The Road' is nigh on perfect, but it always bugged me that it didn't contain any tracks from Gimme Back My Bullets. Would love to have heard that track on the LP as well as one other, probably Roll Gypsy Roll, as it's one of my favourite deep cuts from this great US band

If You Want Blood You Got It has always been one of my favorite Live albums but I agree with Martin about "Rocker", I wish they would have kept Dog Eat Dog instead which they actually cut from the recording. It contains my favorite version of Hell Aint A Bad Place To Be. It just suddenly kicks in and crushes. Bon sounds so good on this album. I also like how you can hear the hum of the equipment and feeback throughout this record. This is another reason why Bad Boy Boogie is one of my favorites off this. Its the song where the band extends their jam a bit while letting Angus do his thing. Its actually somewhat short compared to what they started doing later on. Angus's vibrato and his ability to control his feedback during Boogie is haunting sounding, like he's summoning spirits or something. They were such a force when they were young and hungry and living on the road. Just playing that album back in my head right now and hearing how tight and powerful they sounded is almost giving me goosebumps. I listened to it for the first time in a while just a few months ago and now I feel like blasting it again on my stereo at deafening volume, just to physically feel the music thumping in my chest.

If the songs were not played at the shows that were recorded for a live album, there is no point wishing the songs should have been included on the live album. For example, for Tokyo Tapes, if you look at the setlist website, the only songs that were played, but not included on the album, are Kimigayo and Hell-Cat, as encores. Virgin Killer was not played. Same for If You Want Blood from AC/DC, only one or two songs that were played at that concert were not included on the live album (none were the ones Martin wanted). (BTW, I often checked the setlist website for the shows that were recorded for a live album.) For me, a live album should include all the songs that were played on a tour or show and in the order they were played. This would give you the full experience.

...oh, I wish I could've been a "guest" for this show...you guys touched on quite a few live albums where I thought the track listing was "wanting," but 3 of them are personal "pet peeves" of mine...please forgive the elongated "rant" below on those 3, but I cannot help myself, due to the "personal nature" of this topic...1) Angel "Live Without A Net"...first off, this album was not, to my knowledge, mentioned once as part of your previous "live album" topics...I was always curious about Pete's opinion on it, and unless I missed it somehow, I never got any sort of input until this episode...when it first came out, I was a huge Angel fan, and was elated at the simple existence of a live Angel album...I have zero problems between the Mickey Jones vs. the Felix Robinson eras of the band, but the song selection on this is what makes this an "average" live album vs. a "great" live album...first of all, by this time, live albums featuring drum, guitar and keyboard solos were waning...get rid of that excessive crap and include more songs, as opposed to elongated versions of songs that would've been just fine @ the original album length...second, omit "filler"..."Over And Over" was never one of their best songs, get rid of it...and I agree with Martin on "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore," which, on here, sounds awful...and do we really need a cover version of "All The Young Dudes?"...and the "live" version of "20th Century Foxes" could've been put on the b-side of the studio version of this totally worthless song...in their places, "Cast The First Stone," "Mirrors," "The Fortune," "Sunday Morning," and "Chicken Soup" would've made this fantastic....and one other thing...they left out a verse on "Can You Feel It," which is also lacklustre on this album...I mentioned it to Punky and he wasn't even aware it was missing, and they still perform the "verse-less" version to this day...2) Nazareth "'Snaz"...I hated it back then, and I hate it today...first of all, who the hell let the honky-tonk piano player in? I don't need no damn honky tonk piano in "Beggar's Day," for crying out loud. Second, Pete, you are absolutely correct...this album should've been recorded on the "No Mean City" tour...and it's literally impossible to find any live recordings from that tour. I've put together a 16-song selection that would've made a snarling, biting, kicking live album from Nazareth, but from what I've read, they deemed it necessary to "show their versatility" as opposed to being a straight-forward kick-ass live band...to each their own. But "Go Down Fighting," "Revenge Is Sweet," "I Am The Violin," "Silver Dollar Forger," "No Mean City," "Alcatraz"...they had so many damn good songs that would've made this a killer album...I was the "entertainment editior" for my high school newspaper the year this came out...I gave it a shitty review, because it's a shitty album...and, finally 3) Rush "Exit Stage Left"...despite the horrible production, the album is...weird. Initially addressing Pete's addtions to the album, I was in attendance at both the "Permanent Waves" and "Moving Pictures" shows, and although I agree with your inclusions, the band did not play "Circumstances" and "A Farewell To Kings" on those tours...what I submit as an alternative is this...at this time, Rush was "riding a wave"...why not take a dare (not like Rush would 'take a dare' on anything...!) and release a 3-disc live album...that way, the entire concert could be represented...parts of "Cygnus/Hemispheres"..."The Camera Eye"..."Natural Science"..."Vital Signs," which was relegated to the b-side of a single from the "Signals" album...after all, Yes and ELP did it...why not Rush? Particularly at that time of their career...as for your removal of "Beneath, Between And Behind," I'm glad they did it, along with "A Passage To Bangkok." Yes, it would've been cool to hear both of those on "All The World's A Stage," but at least there is a live representation of those songs (although the studio versions of both smoke the live versions...) from that time period. Sorry I was so long-winded, but you "hit a nerve" with me on this topic. :0)

Wanted to add that another good topic is "perfect timing" of the release... DAVID BOWIE DAVID LIVE - At The Tower Theater, Philadelphia (1974) RCA Victor Any time i listen to this brilliant and all consuming great double live album, I feel instantly grateful for "when" this album was released. Although I love all Bowie music through the early 80s, if "David Live" (1974) had been "even one year earlier," there would be no Diamond Dogs tracks. And if it had come out in say, 1976, you would not only have less of all those excellent earlier songs, but you'd have David Bowie himself in a slightly different state of mind. I'd also like to menton that this album features Bowie in brilliant, powerful voice and the highly underrated Earl Slick putting out killer solo after solo, magnificent lick after lick of guitar that matches the songs perfectly. Not to mention Mike Garson's decadent piano, which adds such a uniquely brazen touch to the top. It's a wholly magnificent album, and THE one I think of first when it comes to this particular topic... and a helluva lot else too. Bowie also adds in a slightly more fresh approach to most of the songs as well (1984, Rebel Rebel, Sweet Thing, Changes, Suffragette City, Aladdin Sane, Cracked Actor, Rock and Roll With Me, The Width of a Circle, The Jean Genie and the stunning Rock and Roll Suicide (in its "best ever" form)....all of which are performed in a way slightly different from the norm, and pefectly fitting for this immersive and involving concert. One which truly makes you feel like "you're there," in the Tower Theater, July, 1974. ML ⚡

Agree and disagree with Martin, about AC/DC's "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" 1978, Atlantic CBS, inc. First off, I do agree that it should've been a double album. Could've included several other POWERAGE tracks (also "my" fave studio LP), such as "Up To My Neck In You," "Gone Shootin'," "What's Next to The Moon" "Sin City" and "Down Payment Blues" to choose from (all of which are stellar AC/DC songs) BUT.... this album does work fantastically, just as it is! Martin, look, if you want to say that you don't want to hear "The Jack" or "Bad Boy Boogie," make sure you're talking about the later BJ era, when "The Jack" was performed in a 'much less effective' way. THE JACK here is totally classic, what with Bon's much more visceral, alt. lyrics and....oh, shit...Angus Young's absolutely killer licks! I mean, his soloing on "The Jack" is some of the finest blues work...ever. Not to mention his unbelievable TONE. It does not get better. "Bad Boy Boogie" and "Let There Be Rock" also contain a far more effective, badass, evil-tinged quality that tops the already marvelous studio versions. So, yes to it bring a double album, NO to replacing any of the fantastic tracks already present. *I wouldn't mind this album also containing brilliant eaeloet tracks like "Rock and Roll Singer," "Overdose" and "Can I Sit Next To You Girl" as well. Also, Pete, I totally agree about The Rolling Stones. That album should've included "Gimmie Shelter," "Live With Me," and "Monkey Man"...just to note three from one album. Totally agree with that! But....those two Chuck Berry songs (Carol & Little Queenie) are both brilliant, groovy & involving. Most especially due to the great Mick Taylor, who makes both that much more badass! Marc ⚡

Good show guys, some excellent choices and a few I haven't even heard yet, so yay more homework for me, I guess. lol There are a few that came to mind but my live album was a posthumous release. Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoads Tribute, released in 1987. Since it was released 5 years after Randy's death, I never understood why, " Over The Mountain " wasn't the opening song, let alone not on it at all! I could have done without, " Paranoid " or " No Bone Movies ". I also would have put, " Diary of a Madman " on there as well, " Little Dolls " or " S.A.T.O " would have been great too. It was heavily lop sided with the Blizzard songs and only two songs off of DOAMM, " Believer " and " Flying High Again ", which are okay but not as good as the others I mentioned, at least not to me. lol

How about a show on lost live albums that have come back at a later date? Such as all the tracks added to Unleashed in the east, side 4 of Live after death being removed and then added back a few years later, or the full show recording of Maiden Japan that blows away the Live EP...
@Canuck1000 Жыл бұрын
Maiden Japan was supposed to be a 2-LP live album, but was reduced to a 4- or 5-song EP (depending on the version) after Paul D was fired. The management decided that it would not be good to release a double LP when the singer was no longer in the band and a new album with a new singer was going to be released a few months later. I enjoyed listening to the bootleg version of Maiden Japan (the full show where the songs were recorded). I like your idea for the subject.

Pete, you're so right about Queen Live At Wembley '86, they left off so many good live songs, the 2 you mentioned as well as Somebody To Love (you only have to see Montreal '81 or Milton Keynes '82 DVD's to see how great it is), Spread Your Wings, Stone Cold Crazy, You're My Best Friend, Don't Stop Me Now, Play The Game,Dragon Attack, etc. That's why Montreal and Milton Keynes will always be superior. I'll never never ever understand the thinking why they'd leave off Stargazer. Arguably their best (and favorite among most fans) song.

The only one i can think of is Ozzy Osbourne. Speak of the Devil. I would scrap the whole set list and put in the songs from the Diary of a Madman tour. 🤘🏽

Great shirt Pete! I’m watching on my phone so it’s pretty small & not really clear. But I’d know that logo anywhere. Can’t see below the logo…which concert or album was it from?

Unleashed In The East is about as perfect of a live album for Judas Priest at that time period. What would make it absolutely more killer is if they would've added a few more tracks from Stained Class to the set list. Like maybe Saints In Hell, Savage or even Stained Class. But I don't think I would remove any of it's current songs.

As much as I like Rainbow On Stage, it does feel weak! Pete's picks for changed songs on that one are perfect! I think the album is more remembered because of Ronnie James Dio (huge fan here) as opposed to the quality of the setlist; or lack of. Very interesting topic and video here.

Damn @martinpopoff! Six hours?! Did he try to sell you a timeshare when you were at it too?! 🤣🤣 I love this topic. Especially the Priest pick. Totally agree with that one with adding Grinder or SFV. Maybe something like Dissident Aggressor too. 👍 I was actually thinking about a topic the other day when I was talking to one of my friends that maybe you guys might find interesting, and we actually . Actually two. First is “Top 10 Songs That Put You in a Trance” and second is “Top 10 Songs That When You Hear Them Put You Right Back to a Specific Moment in Your Life” with examples. Cheers boys!

I'm surprised the original Live At Leeds album wasn't mentioned. Less covers and more originals would have made the album so much more representative of their live act at the time.

more than likely that the re-issue included the entire show. But I agree.

Queen released very few official live albums and it could be argued that they heavily promoted the studio album live that was released at that time, sadly for reasons known only to them they discarded the majority of their 70's catalogue in the 80's whether that was because of changes in Freddie's voice or maybe they just got comfortable/ lazy with the same old set.

I dunno, I remember sort of two and a half, for a band that was 17-ish years max, that's pretty good.

Saxon The Eagle Has Landed : no Dallas 1 P.M., no Denim and Leather, no And The Bands Played On, weird choice, they played them on the '82 tour. I think Fire In The Sky and Machine Gun are not bad but they're not as good as these 3 songs.

The only problem I see here is that a lot of the songs you guys suggest were not played on the corresponding tours... like "Monkey Man". Woulda been great, but they didn't have a live version to include.

Quo Live - Paper Plane Supertramp Paris-,Give A Little Bit If You Want Blood - Fling Thing which was the intro to Rocker at the time. Would include Stargazer but it’s Pete’s pick. Of course it was on Live in Germany.

Live In Cologne by Rainbow is their best. I'm unclear why there is no live version of Light In The Black. So weird.
@kennyrichey3238 Жыл бұрын
Rainbow first started out their Rainbow Rising Tour with A Light In The Black included in their set list right after playing Stargazer. But after a few shows it was too demanding & tiresome for Cozy to play back to back every night. So they took it off their set list. There might be a rare recording of it live somewhere.

Lots of matters I don't agree. On stage is missing Stargazer of course but what is on that vinyl is dynamite. I would not keep out Mood for a day and Rick Wakeman's solo but The Fish. Live/Life to me is superior and more modern than Live and dangerous. Two great live albums. I can'0t see much difference in quality

Just wanted to chime in 'Snaz' - I totally agree with you Pete and I think Martin you give it a 6 in your 80's metal book. I think they missed an opportunity after 'Hair of the Dog' - that would have been the perfect time for Nazareth to put out a live record after four of their strongest (and most rockin') LPs. 'Snaz just doesn't do it for me, the covers are definitely a problem but also - why a keyboard player? It ruins "This Flight Tonight" and I hear it on 'Hair of the Dog' for Christ's sake??? Why??? 'Razamanaz' and 'Beggars' Day' are good and 'Telegram' is well done but much of the rest - not so much. Again a missed opportunity and a sign that the 80's would be a tough slog for them - if only they continued to be a hard rock band....
